Peer and parent influences on youth skateboarding and factors that affect their decision to return to the sport after injury.

Skateboarding is an increasingly popular sport among youth, despite the fact that they are a high-risk group for injuries during this activity. The purpose of this study was twofold: to explore youths' perceptions about the influences that peers and parents have on their skateboarding; and to identify factors that affect their decisions about returning to the sport after injury. Virtual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 26 youth, 14-17 years of age, who had experienced a medically-treated injury while skateboarding during the past year. Applying thematic analyses, major findings i

An online survey to understand the needs of caregivers of family members with 22q11 deletion syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Most individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) have multi-system and lifelong needs requiring substantial support. Their primary caregivers are usually family members who dedicate lifelong time and effort to their role. The pressures of their roles can negatively impact caregivers' psychosocial well-being, suggesting a need for additional support for this community who currently have no specialised interventions available. METHOD: This online study surveyed 103 caregivers of family members with 22q11DS to determine the barriers to accessing support that they faced, the

The effect of non-punitive peer comparison and performance feedback on drivers' behavior using the telematics: The first randomized trial in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive driving is the leading behavior resulting in fatal or nonfatal disabling injuries. Therefore, programs with the main focus on driving behavior could reduce the risk of traffic injuries remarkably. We aimed to investigate the role of non-punitive performance feedback on drivers' behavior and evaluate the persistence of the altered behavior by using in-vehicle telematics. METHODS: This study was done as a randomized controlled trial by repeated-measures design to evaluate the non-punitive behavioral intervention's efficacy on the behavioral transition to safer driving for

Anxiety in Attachment and Sexual Relationships in Adolescence: A Moderated Mediation Model.

Adolescence is characterized by several transformations, such as identity construction, progressive estrangement from parents, relational interest in peers, and body changes that also involve sexuality issues. In this process, attachment patterns play a fundamental role in relationships, and when these are dysfunctional, they can result in internalizing and externalizing problems. Often, females show their relational difficulties through internalizing expressions and males through externalizing expressions. Additionally, given the sexual progress involved in this life moment, psychological sym

Academic help-seeking interactions in the classroom: A microlongitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Help-seeking research has traditionally inferred behavioural responses to the need for help from post-hoc reflections and experiments outside of the classroom context. AIM: We aimed to gain an ecologically valid understanding of the help-seeking process by examining the association between pupils' task-specific perceptions and their help-seeking interactions with teachers and peers during lessons. SAMPLE: Participants were 290 pupils in Years 4-6 (aged 8.22-11.48) and 12 teachers in 12 classrooms in three schools across two local authorities in South East England, UK. METHOD: Th

Wellbeing in Secondary Education (WISE) Study to Improve the Mental Health and Wellbeing of Teachers: A Complex System Approach to Understanding Intervention Acceptability.

Teaching staff report poorer mental health and wellbeing than the general working population. Intervention to address this issue is imperative, as poor wellbeing is associated with burnout, presenteeism, and adverse student mental health outcomes. The Wellbeing in Secondary Education (WISE) intervention is a secondary school-based programme aimed at improving the mental health and wellbeing of teachers and students. There are three components: awareness-raising for staff; a peer support service delivered by staff trained in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA); and Schools and Colleges Mental Health

'Progression capitals': How homeless health peer advocacy impacts peer advocates.

This article presents analysis from a qualitative evaluation of a homeless health peer advocacy (HHPA) service in London, United Kingdom. Whilst evidence is growing for the impact of peer programming on clients, understanding of the impact on peers themselves is limited in the context of homelessness. Research here is vital for supporting sustainable and effective programmes. Analysis of interview data with 14 current and former peer advocates, 2 members of staff and 3 external stakeholders suggests peer advocacy and its organizational setting can generate social, human, cultural and physical

From resistance to acceptance in small group work: Students' narratives.

BACKGROUND: Small group work helps the development of students' collaborative attributes and their knowledge enhancement. However, teachers may face challenges when they have students who resist group work. Possible reasons of their resistance may have been generally discussed but rigorous study of this specific student population is often overlooked. OBJECTIVES: To compare the perspectives of small group learning among students who resisted group work before and after group learning. DESIGN: Students' narratives were collected before and after group work. A structured intervention consisted

Resilience in deaf children: A comprehensive literature review and applications for school staff.

Resilience is a dynamic, multidimensional complex concept that implies risk and protective factors, adaptation, and success. Communication and language are often identified as barriers in deaf children's development. However, research linking deafness in childhood and resilience is scarce. The present comprehensive literature review aims to verify which are the predominant risk factors for this group, which protective factors may be identified and if significant differences have been found between deaf and hearing children regarding resilience. A systematic search, performed in seven databases

Analysis of Bystander Behavior Towards Intimate Partner Violence via Peerformance.

This study of a South Asian community in the midwestern USA examines what bystanders do when they witness an incident of intimate partner violence (IPV). Because of ethical and safety constraints, in lieu of observation in a natural setting, data were collected at a Peerformance, a peer-led IPV prevention program, using the forum theatre method introduced in Augusto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed. Event attendees were invited to respond to an IPV incident enacted by peer educators in which a controlling husband's behavior escalates to the point of suggesting physical violence. Using a grounde

Being a peer support mentor for individuals who have had a lower limb amputation: an interpretative phenomenological analysis.

Purpose: Although peer support has received research attention within different health related contexts, there is limited research considering individuals who have experienced an amputation. In particular, the peer mentoring role is under-explored. Therefore, this research aimed to explore the experiences of participants delivering peer support interventions to individuals with lower limb loss. Methods: Eight people who acted as peer mentors for people with limb loss took part in semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Results: Two ov

Preadolescent Peer Sexual Abuse: A Systematic Literature Review.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a worldwide social problem which has received much attention from policy makers, researchers, and practitioners. A considerable portion of CSA research has focused on adult offenders, the result of which is that most of our existing knowledge regarding prevention and intervention has been based on abuse perpetrated by this population. The current literature review, by contrast, was designed to spotlight the phenomenon of preadolescent peer sexual abuse (PAPSA), focusing on children ages 12 and under, using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-An

Additive and Interactive Effects of Victimization on Adolescent Aggression Across Social Settings.

Considering that children and adolescents can face multiple exposures to violence due to their involvement in different socialization domains, this study aimed to analyze additive and interactive effects of physical and verbal victimization by parents, peers, and schoolteachers on adolescent aggression across social settings. With regard to parent-child and teacher-adolescent relationships, physical and verbal forms of aggression were differentiated, whereas aggression by and toward peers was assessed by a composite measure of overt and indirect aggression. Data were drawn from three large sec

Adopting a survivor identity after cancer in a peer support context.

PURPOSE: The term cancer survivor can refer to individuals from diagnosis through the rest of their life. However, not all people with cancer identify as a survivor, and underlying factors and correlates are yet to be well-explored empirically. METHODS: Study 1 surveyed men in a prostate cancer peer support network (n = 514), exploring psychosocial variables related to adopting a survivor identity. Study 2 interviewed 160 women with breast cancer in an online support group and collected observational data, assessing how survivor identity relates to perceptions of and participation in online s

Using Social Network Analysis to Understand Peer Relationships on Dietary Patterns in Early Adolescents: A Systematic Review.

CONTEXT: A paucity of studies explore peer influence and the role of social networks in shaping dietary patterns among early adolescents. Unhealthy dietary patterns, characterized by high intakes of added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium and low intakes of nutrient-dense foods, are prevalent among adolescents in the United States. These patterns contribute to increased weight gain that predispose adolescents to obesity and related comorbidities. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this systematic review is to understand the influence of peer social networks on early adolescent dietary patterns.

Applying Social Network Theory to Vaping in High School: Implications for Person-Centered Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Peer influence on risky behavior is particularly potent in adolescence and varies by gender. Smoking prevention programs focused on peer-group leaders have shown great promise, and a social influence model has proven effective in understanding adult smoking networks but has not been applied to adolescent vaping until 2023. This work aims to apply a social influence model to analyze vaping by gender in a high school network. METHODS: A high school's student body was emailed an online survey asking for gender, age, grade level, vape status, and the names of three friends. Custom Jav

Revisiting the Association Between "Gateway Hypothesis" of Early Drug Use and Drug Use Progression: A Cohort Analysis of Peer Influences on Drug Use Progression Among a Population Cohort.

Background and objective: Findings from observational studies indicate that early drug use is a strong predictor of further drug abuse. Because competing explanations abound in cross-sectional studies, causal interpretations from these investigations pose considerable challenge. We evaluated the relationship between early drug use and progression, while estimating modifying influences of adolescents' social contexts. Method: We applied a national longitudinal survey of 11,182 adolescents growing into adulthood over a 14-year period. The data provided a natural setting to evaluate the relations

The costs of peer ethnic discrimination: Longitudinal associations with negative ethnic identity affect and identity coherence among ethnic minority adolescents.

The present study examined longitudinal associations between perceived peer ethnic discrimination, negative ethnic identity affect, and global identity coherence among ethnic minority adolescents in Italy (n = 280; Mage = 14.29; 59.28% female; 76.42% second-generation). Results indicated negative bidirectional associations between negative ethnic identity affect and global identity coherence. While the associations between peer discrimination and negative ethnic identity affect were bidirectional and positive, the links between peer discrimination and identity coherence were unidirectional and

Pathways to honesty: Exploring the ecological desistance of atypical lying features.

Atypical lying (i.e., dishonesty that is excessive, impulsive, for fun, or lacks clear motive) may signal broader developmental risks. This study examined whether baseline levels and changes in parenting, peer, and individual factors were associated with trajectories of atypical lying from ages 14 to 26. Data from 1354 participants (86.41% male; baseline Mage = 16.04; 41.5% Black, 33.5% Hispanic, 20.2% White, 4.8% Other) in the Pathways to Desistance study were analyzed.
