Applications of botulinum toxin to the female pelvic floor: Botulinum toxin for genito-pelvic pain penetration disorder and chronic pelvic pain in women.

Chronic pain conditions like genito-pelvic pain penetration disorder and chronic pelvic pain cause significant morbidity in women worldwide and yet are underdiagnosed and undertreated. While the use of botulinum toxin for pain conditions has expanded, there are few randomized controlled studies of botulinum toxin for pelvic pain conditions in women. This paper provides an update on the current status and context for considering botulinum toxin treatment for these conditions to complement and expand currently available approaches. High quality clinical trials to evaluate safety and efficacy and

Association between pelvic floor disorder symptoms and QoL scores with depressive symptoms among pelvic organ prolapse patients.

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus on the relationship between depressive symptoms (DS) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP) symptoms and quality of life (QoL). Our hypothesis was that women with DS and POP have worse symptoms and QoL than those without DS and POP. AIM: Our aim was to compare two groups of POP patients, those with depressive symptoms and those without, and evaluate the association of symptoms and QoL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This planned report is part of a prospective study evaluating the impact of pessary use among symptomatic POP patients. Patients were evaluated by POP quantifi

Anorectal manometry for the diagnosis of pelvic floor disorders in patients with hypermobility spectrum disorders and hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) including impaired rectal evacuation are common in patients with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) or Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS). The effect of connective tissue pathologies on pelvic floor function in HSD/hEDS remains unclear. We aimed to compare clinical characteristics and anorectal pressure profile in patients with HSD/hEDS to those of age and sex matched controls. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all FGID patients who underwent high resolution anorectal manometry (HR-ARM) and balloon expulsion te

Impact of gynecologic cancer on pelvic floor disorder symptoms and quality of life: an observational study.

The objective of our observational prospective study was to investigate the severity and prevalence of urinary and pelvic floor disorders in gynecologic cancer survivors. All patients surviving gynecological cancer in the region as well as women receiving invitations to attend breast-screening checkups as the control population were asked to fill-in questionnaires assessing pelvic prolapse symptoms (PFDI-20, Wexner) and associated quality of life (PFIQ-7). Eighty-nine women were included in the cancer survivor group and 1088 in the control group. Pelvic floor symptoms (PFDI-20 questionnaire) w

Prevalence of pelvic floor disorders in the female population and the impact of age, mode of delivery, and parity.

PURPOSE: Dysfunction of pelvic floor may cause many different symptoms, such as urinary and anal incontinence, obstructed defecation and constipation. No previous studies have examined all of these symptoms together. The purposes of the present study were to determine prevalence of pelvic floor disorders among the female population and to evaluate the impact of age, parity, and mode of delivery on these disorders. METHODS: The study was performed on a general population of Turkish women. Women were excluded who were pregnant, who were within 6 months postpartum, who had cognitive disorders or

Correlation between vaginal stiffness index and pelvic floor disorder quality-of-life scales.

The objective of this study was to determine if vaginal stiffness index, an in vivo vaginal biomechanical property, is correlated with pelvic floor disorder symptom distress, impact on quality of life, or sexual function as measured by disease-specific quality-of-life scales. Forty-eight women completed validated quality-of-life scales (pelvic floor distress inventory-short form, pelvic floor impact questionnaire, and pelvic organ prolapse/urinary incontinence sexual questionnaire) and underwent in vivo vaginal biomechanical testing. After bivariate relationships between vaginal stiffness inde

Imaging modalities for the detection of posterior pelvic floor disorders in women with obstructed defaecation syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Obstructed defaecation syndrome (ODS) is difficulty in evacuating stools, requiring straining efforts at defaecation, having the sensation of incomplete evacuation, or the need to manually assist defaecation. This is due to a physical blockage of the faecal stream during defaecation attempts, caused by rectocele, enterocele, intussusception, anismus or pelvic floor descent. Evacuation proctography (EP) is the most common imaging technique for diagnosis of posterior pelvic floor disorders. It has been regarded as the reference standard because of extensive experience, although it ha

FUNCTIONAL AND ANATOMICAL ANALYSIS OF THE ANORECTUM OF FEMALE SCLERODERMA PATIENTS AT A CENTER FOR PELVIC FLOOR DISORDERS.

BACKGROUND: Scleroderma or progressive systemic sclerosis is characterized by a chronic inflammatory process with proliferation of fibrous connective tissue and excessive deposition of collagen and extracellular matrix in the skin, smooth muscle, and viscera. The smooth muscle most involved in scleroderma is that of the esophagus, and dysphagia is the most commonly reported symptom. However, the internal anal sphincter may also be impaired by degeneration and fibrosis, leading to concomitant anal incontinence in scleroderma patients. These patients may neglect to complain about it, except when

A critical review on magnetic stimulation: what is its role in the management of pelvic floor disorders?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review looks at the acute effects of magnetic stimulation on urodynamic parameters and reviews the data on its use in the management of urinary incontinence. RECENT FINDINGS: Reported cure rates for stress incontinence immediately after a course of perineal magnetic stimulation range from 12.5 to 52.9% with good improvement occurring in 32% to 41%. However the effect seems temporary and dependent on the number of sessions. Sacral and pelvic floor magnetic stimulation have also been shown to increase cystometric capacity, inhibit detrusor overactivity and resolve overac

Comparing Patient-Reported Outcome Measures for Pain in Women With Pelvic Floor Disorders: A Scoping Review.

Women with pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) typically undergo surgery involving transvaginal mesh implants; however, transvaginal mesh surgery is associated with many adverse events including post-surgical pain. Assessment of pain as a symptom is necessary using patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). This scoping review aimed to describe and compare existing PROMs previously used to measure pain in women with PFDs. A scoping search of Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL Plus, Ovid PsycInfo, and grey literature was conducted. Studies published in English describing the development, implementation, an

Pelvic Floor Disorders in Black Women: Prevalence, Clinical Care, and a Strategic Agenda to Prioritize Care.

Pelvic floor disorders are a group of common conditions affecting women of all racial and ethnic groups. These disorders are undertreated in all women, but this is especially magnified in Black people who have been historically marginalized in the United States. This article seeks to highlight the prevalence of pelvic floor disorders in Black women, evaluate the clinical care they receive, examine barriers they face to equitable care, and present a strategic agenda to prioritize the care of Black women with pelvic floor disorders.

Prevalence of urinary incontinence and other pelvic floor disorders in women with myotonic dystrophy type 1.

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a neuromuscular disease that can affect the pelvic floor muscles but few studies have investigated pelvic floor disorders, including urinary incontinence. The main purpose of this study was to document the prevalence, characteristics, and impacts of urinary incontinence and other pelvic floor disorders in women with DM1. Associations between pelvic floor disorders and phenotypes, considering age and parity, were explored. Eighty adult women aged 47,1±13,7 years old participated in a cross-sectional study using validated questionnaires, including the Internati

Clinical and instrumental evaluation of pelvic floor disorders before and after bariatric surgery in obese women.

BACKGROUND: Obesity, well known as a risk factor for several diseases, can also lead to pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD). However, scant data are available regarding PFD in obese individuals. Our study was designed to assess the prevalence, severity, and the quality of life (QOL) effect of PFD in obese women before and after bariatric surgery at a university hospital in Italy. METHODS: A total of 100 obese (body mass index [BMI] ≥30 kg/m(2)) women completed 6 validated specific and QOL questionnaires about PFD. The patients were evaluated by physical examination, endoanal ultrasonography, recta

Neurogenic Pelvic Floor Dysfunctions Across Neurological Disorders: Mechanisms, Phenotypes, and Precision Rehabilitation Pathways-A Narrative Review.

Background: Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is frequent in neurological disorders, but it is often approached as a secondary urological or gynecological problem rather than a functional rehabilitation target. Neurological disease can disturb cortical, pontine, spinal, sacral, autonomic, somatic, and sensory pathways that regulate bladder storage, voiding, bowel evacuation, sexual function, and pelvic pain modulation. Methods: This narrative review synthesized biomedical evidence identified through PubMed searches from database inception to 2 May 2026. Search concepts included neurogenic lower u

Symptomatic Pelvic Floor Disorders and Their Associated Factors Among Women in Yilmana Densa Woreda, Northwest Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) are common conditions affecting millions of women worldwide. In some regions of Ethiopia, research indicates that one in five women experience PFDs. However, this figure may underestimate the true prevalence due to the stigma surrounding these issues and limited access to healthcare. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of symptomatic PFDs and associated factors among women in Yilmana Densa Woreda. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 597 women in Yilama Densa Woreda, Northwest Ethiopia, using a
