Effects of diminished and conflicting sensory information on balance in patients with cerebellar deficits.

We studied the effects of altered sensory information on standing balance in 25 patients with cortical cerebellar atrophy (CCA), nine patients with olivoponto-cerebellar atrophy (OPCA), and 10 normal subjects. The total sway path and its components, the anteroposterior (AP) sway path and the lateral sway path, were measured under six conditions: (1) standing on a fixed platform with the eyes open and visual surroundings fixed, (2) standing on a fixed platform with the eyes closed, (3) standing on a fixed platform with the eyes open and visual surroundings AP sway referenced, (4) standing on an

Perceptual Quality Assessment of Real-World Noise in Ultra-High-Definition Images.

Accurately assessing the perceptual quality of ultra-high-definition (UHD) images degraded by real-world noise remains a formidable challenge in computer vision. Existing Blind Image Quality Assessment (BIQA) methods, typically tailored for synthetic distortions and low-resolution inputs, often fail to generalize to these complex real-world scenarios. To bridge this gap, we first establish a real-world Ultra-High-Definition Noisy Image Quality (UNIQ-5k) dataset, consisting of 4,759 UHD images with fine-grained perceptual annotations. Leveraging this foundation, we propose PINE, a novel noise-o

Acute technostress, schizotypal traits, and visual illusion perception in the general population.

The present study investigated the impact of acute technostress (i.e., stress induced by technology - here, computer glitches) and schizotypy on visual illusions, including the Müller-Lyer, Ebbinghaus, Poggendorff, and Ponzo illusions. While previous research has examined perceptual anomalies in schizophrenia and schizotypy, the role of stress in perceptual distortions has been overlooked until recently. In particularly, its acute effects are unknown. Healthy participants completed four visual illusion tasks under two conditions: a standard condition and a technostress-inducing condition invol

The Initial Progression of Physical and Perceptual Symptoms Associated With Aniseikonia.

PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate the initial progression of physical and perceptual symptoms associated with wearing spectacles that produce unequal retinal image sizes in the two eyes (aniseikonia). METHODS: A within-subjects experiment (n = 20) was conducted to assess how symptoms change over one hour. Participants wore spectacles that contained a minifying lens (4%) over one eye and a plano lens over the other. They reported their physical and perceptual symptoms on Likert scales while performing activities that involved hand-eye coordination, locomotion, and viewing at distance and near. The

[The Alice in Wonderland syndrome].

BACKGROUND: Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) is characterised by abnormal perception, such as metamorphopsia, macropsia, micropsia, teleopsia and pelopsia. Although brief and transient, these episodes of visual distortion may lead to great anxiety, especially in children. AIWS seems to be associated with specific viral infections, epilepsy, migraine, and brain tumours. CASE DESCRIPTION: An 8-year-old boy had episodes of seeing persons further away than they actually were (teleopsia). These perceptual distortions occurred when he was about to go to sleep. The episodes never exceeded 10 minu

Size perception in hemianopia and neglect.

Some debate remains as to whether underestimation of the horizontal size of objects in the left part of visual space is a general disturbance in spatial neglect. The issue is unclear because size perception may be influenced by factors other than neglect, e.g. visual field defects such as hemianopia. To disentangle these effects, we compared the performance of patients with pure neglect, pure hemianopia or both on the same size-comparison test. Whereas pure neglect was accompanied by misperception of horizontal object size, patients with pure hemianopia showed an even greater impairment of siz

Automatic and Fast Encoding of Representational Uncertainty Underlies the Distortion of Relative Frequency.

Humans do not have an accurate representation of probability information in the environment but distort it in a surprisingly stereotyped way ("probability distortion"), as shown in a wide range of judgment and decision-making tasks. Many theories hypothesize that humans automatically compensate for the uncertainty inherent in probability information ("representational uncertainty") and probability distortion is a consequence of uncertainty compensation. Here we examined whether and how the representational uncertainty of probability is quantified in the human brain and its relevance to probabi

Investigating Body Image Disturbance in Anorexia Nervosa Using Novel Biometric Figure Rating Scales: A Pilot Study.

This study uses novel biometric figure rating scales (FRS) spanning body mass index (BMI) 13.8 to 32.2 kg/m2 and BMI 18 to 42 kg/m2 . The aims of the study were (i) to compare FRS body weight dissatisfaction and perceptual distortion of women with anorexia nervosa (AN) to a community sample; (ii) how FRS parameters are associated with questionnaire body dissatisfaction, eating disorder symptoms and appearance comparison habits; and (iii) whether the weight spectrum of the FRS matters. Women with AN (n = 24) and a community sample of women (n = 104) selected their current and ideal body on the

Spatial perspective and coordinate systems in autoscopy: a case report of a "fantome de profil" in occipital brain damage.

Autoscopic phenomena refer to complex experiences involving the illusory reduplication of one's own body. Here we report the third long-lasting case of autoscopy in a patient with right occipital lesion. Instead of the commonly reported frontal mirror view (fantôme spéculaire), the patient saw her head and upper trunk laterally in side view (fantôme de profil). We found that the visual appearance and completeness of the autoscopic image could be selectively modulated by active and passive movements, without being influenced by imagining the same movements or by tactile and auditory stimulation

Cognitive-behavioral approaches to the treatment of social anxiety disorder.

The current paper provides an overview of and evidence for the cognitive-behavioral formulation of social anxiety. In addition, the paper presents the theory supporting an empirical basis for the use of exposure and cognitive restructuring in the treatment of social anxiety disorder. Finally, the paper concludes with a review of the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral treatments for social anxiety disorder, including a comparison with psychopharmacological treatments. Both cognitive-behavioral and pharmacological interventions appear to be effective for social anxiety disorder, with relative

A new mode of fear expression: perceptual bias in height fear.

Emotion and psychopathology researchers have described the fear response as consisting of four main components--subjective affect, physiology, cognition, and behavior. The current study provides evidence for an additional component in the domain of height fear (perception) and shows that it is distinct from measures of cognitive processing. Individuals High (N = 35) and Low (N = 36) in acrophobic symptoms looked over a two-story balcony ledge and estimated its vertical extent using a direct height estimation task (visual matching), and an indirect task (size estimation); the latter task seems

Attraction of flashes to moving dots.

Motion is known to distort visual space, producing illusory mislocalizations for flashed objects. Previously, it has been shown that when a stationary bar is flashed in the proximity of a moving stimulus, the position of the flashed bar appears to be shifted in the direction of nearby motion. A model consisting of predictive projections from the sub-system that processes motion information onto the sub-system that processes position information can explain this illusory position shift of a stationary flashed bar in the direction of motion. Based on this model of motion-position interactions, w

Deluding the motor system.

How do we know that our own actions belong to us? How are we able to distinguish self-generated sensory events from those that arise externally? In this paper, I will briefly discuss experiments that were designed to investigate these questions. In particular, I will review psychophysical and neuroimaging studies that have investigated how we recognise the consequences of our own actions, and why patients with delusions of control confuse self-produced and externally produced actions and sensations. Studies investigating the failure of this 'self-monitoring' mechanism in patients with delusion

Temporary and permanent noise-induced changes in distortion product otoacoustic emissions in CBA/CaJ mice.

A number of studies have shown that the ear can be protected from sound over-exposure, either by activating the cochlear efferent system, or by sound 'conditioning' in which the role of the efferent system is less certain. To study more definitively the molecular basis of deliberately induced cochlear protection from excessive sounds, it is advantageous to determine, for an inbred mouse strain, a range of noise exposure parameters that effectively alter cochlear function. As an initial step towards this goal, young CBA/CaJ mice were exposed to a 105-dB SPL octave-band noise (OBN), centered at

Sensory perceptions of women receiving tamoxifen for breast cancer.

Tamoxifen has been used as adjuvant treatment in advanced and early-stage breast cancer for the past decade. Recently this synthetic antiestrogen drug assumed a new role of chemoprevention for women at risk of developing breast cancer. The commonly occurring side effects associated with tamoxifen administration contribute to the acceptance of this antineoplastic drug for palliation and cure. However, there are no data about the sensory effects of women receiving tamoxifen. The purpose of this study was to elicit subjects' descriptions of sensory experiences while receiving tamoxifen. These des

Impaired perception of moving objects after minor injuries to the eye and midface: the Pulfrich phenomenon.

Delayed conduction along one optic nerve can result in an incorrect appreciation of moving objects. The temporal mismatch between the two different pathways results in altered perception of the vector of a moving target and is known as 'the Pulfrich phenomenon'. This is a well-recognised handicap in patients with multiple sclerosis, but has not previously been reported as a consequence of injury. All 187 patients who presented during 1991 with reduced visual acuity as a result of midfacial injuries were examined with a pendulum. Six had the defect and five of these had symptoms. In each case t

The psychological importance of nonverbal sounds. An experiment with induced hearing deficiency.

An experiment is described where marked hearing deficiency was induced in 28 normal-hearing subjects by means of occlusion. The primary aims were to investigate to what extent feelings of security and control are affected when hearing is suddenly reduced or distorted, and to explore the relative psychological importance attached to different sound categories other than speech. It was found that the inability to hear the movements of other people produces tension and stress and leads to feelings of insecurity and loss of control of the situation. The distortion of one's own voice leads to inhib

Depictive and metric body size estimation in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

A distorted representation of one's own body is a diagnostic criterion and core psychopathology of both anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). Despite recent technical advances in research, it is still unknown whether this body image disturbance is characterized by body dissatisfaction and a low ideal weight and/or includes a distorted perception or processing of body size. In this article, we provide an update and meta-analysis of 42 articles summarizing measures and results for body size estimation (BSE) from 926 individuals with AN, 536 individuals with BN and 1920 controls. We rep

Embodiment of underweight and normal-weight avatars affects bodily self-representations in anorexia nervosa.

Body image distortion (BID) is a crucial aspect of anorexia nervosa (AN), leading to body overestimation, dissatisfaction, and low self-esteem. BID significantly influences the onset, maintenance, and relapse of the pathology. We assessed whether a Full Body Illusion (FBI) using under and normal-weight avatars' bodies affects perceptual body image and body schema estimations in both individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and healthy controls (HC). After each embodiment procedure, we asked participants to estimate the width of their hips (Perceptual Body Image Task) and the minimum aperture wid

Visual perceptual artefacts in cardiothoracic imaging: Implications for diagnostic accuracy and strategies for mitigation.

Visual perceptual artefacts are distortions or illusions in medical image interpretation arising from the human visual system rather than hardware or imaging acquisition processes. These artefacts, emerging at various visual processing stages, such as the retina, visual pathways, visual cortex, and cognitive interpretation stages, impact the interpretation of cardiothoracic images. This review discusses artefacts including Mach bands, Dark Rim, Background Effects, Ambiguous Figures, Subjective Contours, and the Parallax Effect. A thorough literature search was conducted using PubMed and Google
