A dimensional approach to the neuronal correlates of anxiety, depression, and perfectionism: A transdiagnostic dissociation of error-related brain activity.

Transdiagnostic approaches such as the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) highlight the importance of addressing psychopathological constructs dimensionally, since comorbidity and heterogeneity represent prevalent issues in the available categorical diagnosis. The current study analyses distinct internalizing dimensions of depression and anxiety, and the transdiagnostic feature of perfectionism on the modulation of error-related brain activity (i.e., ERN). A sample of 125 participants completed self-reported measures of anxiety, depression, and perfectionism, and performed two versions of the Fla

The relationship between physical appearance perfectionism on subthreshold depression in college students: the role of gender and fear of negative evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past decades, subthreshold depression has emerged as a significant mental health concern among college students, with prevalence rates reaching 40.8%. Despite its substantial impact on psychological well-being, subthreshold depression often remains overlooked due to its failure to meet clinical diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder. Moreover, the underlying mechanisms of subthreshold depression remain poorly understood. This study investigates the interplay between appearance perfectionism, fear of negative evaluation, and gender in relation to subthreshold d

Striving for the perfect diet? The mediating role of perfectionism in the relationship between obsessive compulsive symptoms and traits of Orthorexia Nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is a disordered eating style involving an unhealthy obsession with 'Работает' or 'clean' eating. Its aetiology is still poorly understood and is not yet recognised in diagnostic manuals. While ON has been associated with Obsessive Compulsive (OC) symptoms and perfectionism, no study to date has looked at the relationship between OC symptoms and ON tendencies via perfectionism, or the influence of two facets of perfectionism in this relationship, namely evaluative concern and achievement striving. Examining the potential role of perfectionism helps to understa

A randomised controlled trial of guided internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy for perfectionism: Effects on psychopathology and transdiagnostic processes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Perfectionism is a transdiagnostic process that has been associated with a range of psychopathology and also with other transdiagnostic processes. We have previously shown that guided internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT) can reduce symptoms of dysfunctional perfectionism, however, no impact was observed on symptoms of depression and anxiety. Here we explore the impact of guided ICBT for perfectionism on symptoms of other associated psychopathology, specifically obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders, and also on other associated trans

A randomised trial investigating guided self-help to reduce perfectionism and its impact on bulimia nervosa: a pilot study.

AIM: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate reducing perfectionism as a potential treatment target for individuals with Bulimia Nervosa (BN). METHOD: Forty-eight individuals meeting DSM-IV criteria for BN or eating disorder - not otherwise specified with binge eating [objective or subjective] or purging at least once per week were recruited. Participants were randomly assigned to receive 8 sessions of manual-based guided self-help (GSH) over a 6-week period that was focused on either cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for perfectionism, CBT for BN, or a placebo. Individuals were asse

Perfectionism and coping strategies as risk factors for the development of non-specific work-related upper limb disorders (WRULD).

BACKGROUND: The incidence of non-specific work-related upper limb disorders (WRULD) is rising throughout western society. Literature and our own WRULD file (>1200 patients) revealed that both physical and psychosocial work-related factors are major causes of non-specific WRULD. It also appeared that non-specific WRULD was more likely to develop in patients with neurotic-perfectionist personalities. AIM: To see if, alongside physical and psychosocial work-related factors, personality factors play an important role in developing non-specific WRULD. METHOD: This was a case-control study with tw

The relationship between perfectionism and treatment outcomes among people receiving internet-based cognitive behaviour therapy for Generalised Anxiety Disorder.

Perfectionism is a transdiagnostic process associated with multiple mental health disorders. Perfectionism can moderate the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for depression, but it remains unclear whether perfectionism is associated with CBT outcomes for anxiety disorders. This study investigated the relationship between perfectionism, treatment outcomes and adherence for individuals seeking internet-based CBT (iCBT) for Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD). A total of 1,904 adults from the general Australian community commenced an iCBT GAD program and completed measures of pe

Associations Between Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms, Anxiety Sensitivity, Socially Prescribed Perfectionism, and Severity of Somatic Symptoms Among Individuals with Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVES: The contribution of psychological risk factors to the intensification of pain experienced among individuals with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is relatively under-studied. The present study aims to explore associations between FMS-related somatic symptom severity and two personality tendencies: anxiety sensitivity (AS) and socially prescribed perfectionism (SPP). Furthermore, the relative contributions of these personality tendencies are examined vis-à-vis the experience of potentially traumatic events (PTEs) and the psychopathology of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). The relationship between moral judgment ability, parenting style, and perfectionism in obsessive-compulsive disorder patients: A mediating analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Guilt is an important part of obsessive-compulsive disorder. The abnormal moral cognition of obsessive-compulsive disorder patients may be closely related to their high level of guilt. The purpose of this study was to explore the development level of moral judgment in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and the role of parenting style and perfectionism in moral judgment development. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the clinical psychology department of a Class III hospital in Beijing. The patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder were recruited, and the

Investigating transdiagnostic factors in eating disorders: Does self-esteem moderate the relationship between perfectionism and eating disorder symptoms?

OBJECTIVE: According to Fairburns transdiagnostic model of eating disorders (EDs), high levels of perfectionism and low self-esteem are two core traits across EDs. This study investigates the role of self-esteem as a transdiagnostic moderator of the relationship between perfectionism and ED symptoms across EDs. METHOD: A large group of patients (n = 732) completed several questionnaires measuring perfectionism, self-esteem, and disordered eating symptomatology, more specifically, drive for thinness (DFT) and body dissatisfaction (BD). RESULTS: Across EDs, self-esteem served as a moderator fo

Perfectionism, perceived weight status, and self-esteem interact to predict bulimic symptoms: a model of bulimic symptom development.

An interactive model of perfectionism, perceived weight status, and self-esteem was tested on 342 female undergraduates to predict bulimic symptoms. Using a longitudinal design, the authors tested the model on data collected at 2 points: the spring of participants' senior year of high school and during participants' first year of college. The authors hypothesized and found that self-esteem moderates the interaction between perfectionism and perceived weight status in predicting bulimic symptoms. Women who are high in perfectionism and who consider themselves overweight exhibit bulimic symptoms

Mediating Effects of Emotion Dysregulation and Negative Perfectionism on the Link Between Adverse Parenting and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder Traits.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has established adverse parental rearing as a significant risk factor for obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). This study investigated whether maladaptive emotion regulation strategies and negative perfectionism serve as psychological mechanisms underlying this association, with particular attention to potential sequential mediation pathways. METHODS: This study adopted a cross-sectional design and multi-channel convenience sampling approach. A sample of 827 Chinese university students completed standardized measures assessing OCPD features (OCPD subs

A preliminary investigation of the mediating roles of self-compassion and emotion dysregulation in the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and obsessive-compulsive behaviors.

INTRODUCTION: Recent research has highlighted an association between maladaptive perfectionism and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship are not well understood. The primary aim of this preliminary study was to investigate whether self-compassion and emotion dysregulation independently mediated this relationship. The secondary aim was to determine whether serial mediation existed between these factors. Whether these relations held for overall obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms, versus distinct dimensions of OCD, was also of interest. METHOD:

Longitudinal Impact of Perfectionism on Suicidal Ideation among Chinese College Students with Perceived Academic Failure: The Roles of Rumination and Depression.

OBJECTIVE: Suicide has become a nonnegligible cause of death among emerging adults, and academic performance is one of the most significant factors in Chinese college students' suicidal ideation. Based on this, we examined the risk and protective sides of perfectionism on suicidal ideation among college students with perceived academic failure experiences. METHOD: In the current study, a total of 674 Chinese college students (63.6% females, Mage = 19.96, SD = 1.31) with perceived academic failure in the past six months participated in a survey and completed self-report measures assessing perf

Perfectionism, emotion dysregulation, and affective disturbance in relation to clinical impairment in college-age women at high risk for or with eating disorders.

Individuals with eating disorders (EDs) demonstrate impaired quality of life; however, less than one-third report severe clinical impairment. Thus, it is important to determine factors that may identify those who are most likely to report marked impairment. Perfectionism, emotion dysregulation, and aspects of affective disturbance, such as anxiety and depression, are independently associated with eating pathology and clinical impairment in eating and other disorders. However, little research has explored these three factors concurrently in relation to eating pathology. It is possible that the

Shared genetic and environmental risk factors between undue influence of body shape and weight on self-evaluation and dimensions of perfectionism.

BACKGROUND: Theory and evidence strongly suggest that perfectionism may be a risk factor for eating disorders. The purpose of the current study was to investigate a model that would explain the relationship between the cognitive diagnostic criterion for both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, namely undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, and dimensions of perfectionism. The model of particular interest was the common cause model, which hypothesizes that the phenotypes are caused by the same underlying genetic and environmental risk factors. Anxiety in youth with and without specific learning disorders: exploring the relationships with inhibitory control, perfectionism, and self-conscious emotions.

INTRODUCTION: Since early research on Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), their relationship with emotional issues have been recognized, although emotional factors have received less attention compared to the cognitive processes related with academic achievement. METHODS: This study aimed to investigate mechanisms that may increase vulnerability to generalized and social anxiety in youth with SLD, compared to their non-diagnosed peers. We examined cognitive factors (inhibitory control), personality traits (self-oriented, socially prescribed perfectionism), and self-conscious emotions (shame, g

What is more likely in orthorexia nervosa: perfectionism or OC symptoms? A bayesian method in clinical and non-clinical samples.

PURPOSE: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) exhibits specific features that may overlap with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Perfectionism Striving (PS), and Perfectionism Concern (PC). While previous literature has shown predictiveness in different characteristics of ON, this study aimed to determine if PS, PC and OCD symptoms could predict ON dimensions in at-risk populations using Bayesian models.
