INTRODUCTION: Academic failure is a major contributor to attrition in pharmacy education, and this attrition is also associated with other effects that are secondary fallouts of academic failure. This study sought to assess the emotional implications and overall psychological impact of academic failure among students who repeated at least one class in the pharmacy program at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria.
METHODS: The study involved 177 students from the 200 level to 500 level at the School of Pharmacy, OAU who had repeated at least one class. A pretested questionnaire wa

Anxiety disorders are often associated with impairments in memory, attention, decision-making, and psychomotor function, leading to a reduced quality of life (QoL). Alprazolam, commonly prescribed for acute anxiety disorders, has generated interest regarding its potential impact on anxiety-associated cognitive and psychomotor impairment, especially since effects of short-term use have not been well studied. This review summarizes clinical evidence on the short-term (up to 8 weeks) effects of alprazolam on cognitive performance, psychomotor function, and QoL outcomes in individuals with anxiety

There is compelling evidence that test anxiety-related performance is contributing to documented trends in attrition in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. While some anxiety-mitigation interventions have yielded promising results, these interventions have not been replicated broadly, specifically at different institution types. In the current research, we (a) examine how test anxiety relates to performance in STEM courses, by student characteristics and institution type; and (b) test, via replication, a cognitive reappraisal intervention across 12 courses at seven h

This study examined the moderating role of shyness mindset on the reduction of social anxiety during exposure-based treatment. Participants (N=60) in an intensive outpatient program for anxiety disorders were assessed at pre- and post-treatment. Social performance anxiety decreased dramatically during treatment, but the amount of decrease differed as a function of pre-treatment shyness mindset. At one standard deviation above the mean on both the social performance anxiety and shyness mindset measures, an average reduction of 15 points on the social performance anxiety measure was observed. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this analysis was to determine the generalizability of the relationship between different samples of a driver's perceived state after cannabis use and related performance while operating a motor vehicle.
METHODS: Data were collected from 52 subjects in a study examining the effects of cannabis on driving performance. Data were analyzed using the SAS GLM Select procedure, using stepwise selection, with subjective effects, dosing condition (placebo vs. 6.18% delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol [THC]), and driving context as independent measures. Correlation matrices of meas

PURPOSE: Anxiety-related problems at work are a serious problem in the occupational context, as they come along with sick leave and problems in work participation. The aim of this study is to analyse workplace phobic anxiety in nonclinical context using the Job Demands-Resources model.
METHODS: The study involved a sample of 739 workers from a retail company, mostly with permanent contracts. Structural equation modelling analyses were performed using AMOS software.
RESULTS: Both the health impairment and motivational variables in the JD-R model were significantly related to workplace phobic

Current evidence suggests emotion regulation is an important factor in both math anxiety and math performance, but the interplay between these constructs is unexamined. Given the multicomponent structure of math anxiety, emotion regulation, and math performance, here, we aimed to provide a comprehensive model of the underlying nature of the links between these latent variables. Using the innovative network analysis approach, the study visualized the underlying links between directly observable and measurable variables that might be masked by traditional statistical approaches. With exposure emerging as a key ingredient in anxiety treatment for childhood anxiety disorders (CADs), expansion of exposure techniques is a promising avenue for improving treatment efficacy. The present study examined use of imaginal exposure (IE), a technique understudied in the treatment of CADs. Specifically, the study tested whether two forms of exposure to worries (verbal IE and virtual reality exposure therapy, VRET) would be effective and acceptable forms of exposure with youth. Twenty youth with fears of academic failure completed both types of worry exposure, presented in randomized

The role of anxiety and depression in functional performance during walking in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is controversial. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to assess the effects of anxiety, depression, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) on the functional performance of this patient population. Seventy COPD patients aged 63 ± 11 years participated in the study. To measure their functional performance, the six-minute walk test (6MWT) was used. Anxiety and depression were assessed using two questionnaires: the Anxiety Inventory for Respiratory Disea

Competitive athletes report symptoms of depression and anxiety at rates similar to or higher than the general population. There is some initial evidence that difficulties in emotion regulation are positively associated with depression, anxiety, and stress among university student-athletes; however, research on emotion dysregulation in sport contexts is limited. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to examine the associations between emotion dysregulation, sport performance concerns, and symptoms of depression and anxiety among competitive athletes. We hypothesized that: H1) emotion

Research suggests that anxiety predicts student performance, and that this relationship is mediated at least in part through self-defeating behavior. However, the nature of this relationship has yet to be fully understood. While substantial research has characterized the ways that anxiety affects student performance directly, at the point where it occurs (e.g., test anxiety, stage anxiety), less research has addressed the ways anxiety affects student performance indirectly, as students prepare for a performance. The first type is commonly referred to as performance anxiety. We refer to the sec

David Wark's latest iteration of alert hypnosis, the "49word protocol," reduces performance anxiety. Several case studies have demonstrated improvements in the behavioral responses of subjects using this technique. This case series focuses on the more immediate emotional impact, such as the reported reduction in anxiety, on subjects who have benefited from David Wark's "49word protocol." In this study, we compare the benefits of the "49word protocol" to those of the mindfulness protocol. We compared the anxiety-reducing elements of alert hypnosis (49word protocol) and a mindfulness technique (

Math anxiety (MA) is a feeling of dread, tension and anxiety when dealing with math situations. Avoidance behavior prevents children from learning math, impairing their performance. Cognitive behavioral therapy is an approach with robust evidence of efficacy in treating anxiety disorders. The Coping Cat, a protocol for treating anxiety disorders, inspired the MA intervention reported here. The participant was N. L., an 11-year-old female displaying math-related and math-unrelated anxiety symptoms. Outcome measures included arithmetic performance, and self-reports of general positive and negati

INTRODUCTION: Physiological hand tremor occurs naturally, due to oscillations of the upper extremities. Tremor can be exacerbated by stress and anxiety, interfering with fine motor tasks and potentially impact on surgical performance, particularly in microsurgery. We investigated the link between tremor, anxiety and performance in a neurosurgical module as part of an international surgical course.
METHODS: Essential Skills in the Management of Surgical Cases (ESMSC) course recruits medical students from European Union (EU) medical schools. Students are asked to suture the dura mater in an ex

BACKGROUND: Children with the temperament of behavioral inhibition (BI) face increased risk for social anxiety. However, not all children with BI develop anxiety symptoms. Inhibitory control (IC) has been suggested as a moderator of the pathway between BI and social anxiety. This study uses longitudinal data to characterize development of IC and tests the hypothesis that IC moderates associations between early BI and later social anxiety symptoms.
METHODS: Children completed a Go/Nogo task at ages 5, 7, and 10 years as part of a longitudinal study of BI (measured at 2-3 years) and social anxi

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to characterise heterogeneity in neuropsychological and socio-emotional task performance in young women with anorexia nervosa (AN) using hierarchical cluster analysis. Further, we aimed to test whether cognitive profiles were associated with differences in clinical variables (body mass index, illness duration and age at diagnosis), psychopathology (eating disorder, autistic symptoms, anxiety and depression) and functional impairment.
METHOD: Set-shifting, central coherence and theory of mind abilities were measured in 118 women with acute or remitted AN. A

The current study investigated whether negatively biased self-evaluations of nervousness and social skills are related to how well an individual actually performs, that is performance level. Sixty-eight high socially anxious and 68 control participants (age range 9-17 years) gave a 5 min speech in front of a pre-recorded audience of same age peers and a teacher. Participants' evaluations immediately after the task were measured on a number of performance dimensions. Three independent observers also evaluated recordings of the speech performances. Participants were further divided into good and

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between subtypes of social anxiety and distorted cognition of bodily sensations. The package of questionnaires including the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) was administered to 582 undergraduate students. To identify subtypes of social anxiety, cluster analysis was conducted using scores of the SPS and SIAS. Five clusters were identified and labeled as follows: Generalized type characterized by intense anxiety in most social situations, Non-anxious type characterized by low anxiety levels in

Research suggests that abnormal performance-monitoring contributes to the etiology and maintenance of anxious pathology. Moreover, the anxiety-performance monitoring relationship appears to be specific to the worry dimension of anxiety. Given that anxiety (and worry in particular) is twice as prevalent in women as men, and most studies to date have employed small samples which are underpowered to detect sex-differences, it is possible that sex may be an important moderator of the worry-performance-monitoring relationship. No studies have directly compared the worry-performance-monitoring relat

The present study examined competing models of the bi-directional influences of anxiety and reading achievement. Participants were 153 ethnically-diverse children (84 male, 69 female) from general education classes evaluated in the winter and spring of their first-grade academic year. Children completed standardized measures of reading achievement involving decoding and fluency along with an anxiety rating scale. Hierarchical linear regression analyses revealed that separation anxiety symptoms were negatively predicted by fluency performance and harm avoidance symptoms were positively predicte
