Aging-Related Changes in the Injury Response of the Peripheral Nervous System.

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) significantly impairs patients' quality of life, with elderly individuals experiencing particularly severe consequences due to aging-related declines in neuronal injury response and repair capabilities. Processes of the generation and transmission of injury signals, axonal disruption, initiation of regeneration, and the elongation of regenerating axons, as well as the subsequent reinnervation by these axons, are all significantly influenced by aging. These alterations are closely associated with changes in mitochondrial function, neuronal transport systems, a pers

A Review of the Effect of Peripheral Amyloid β on the Central Nervous System.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder classically defined by cerebral amyloid β (Aβ) plaque deposition and tau pathology. In recent years, AD has increasingly been recognized as a multisystem disorder rather than a purely brain-restricted condition, as mounting evidence indicates that Aβ metabolism is a dynamic, bidirectional process involving both central and peripheral compartments. Peripheral tissues, particularly platelets, liver, kidneys, and the gastrointestinal tract, contribute substantially to circulating Aβ levels and influence cerebral amyloid burden.

Gasotransmitters in the regulation of connexins in central and peripheral nervous system injuries.

Gasotransmitters, such as nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide can freely diffuse across biological membranes, bind to receptors and molecular targets, and modulate multiple intracellular signaling pathways. However, no systematic review exists regarding how gasotransmitters influence central and peripheral nervous system injury by regulating connexins. This review study presents, for the first time, a systematic analysis of the effects of these three gasotransmitters on connexin regulation, with a focus on their potential roles in injuries to the central and peripheral nervous

Peripheral nervous system and neuromuscular disorders in the emergency department: A review.

INTRODUCTION: Acute presentations and emergencies in neuromuscular disorders (NMDs) often challenge clinical acumen. The objective of this review is to refine the reader's approach to history taking, clinical localization and early diagnosis, as well as emergency management of neuromuscular emergencies. METHODS: An extensive literature search was performed to identify relevant studies. We prioritized meta-analysis, systematic reviews, and position statements where possible to inform any recommendations. SUMMARY: The spectrum of clinical presentations and etiologies ranges from neurotoxic env

Inflammatory Mediators of Axon Regeneration in the Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems.

Although most pathways in the mature central nervous system cannot regenerate when injured, research beginning in the late 20th century has led to discoveries that may help reverse this situation. Here, we highlight research in recent years from our laboratory identifying oncomodulin (Ocm), stromal cell-derived factor (SDF)-1, and chemokine CCL5 as growth factors expressed by cells of the innate immune system that promote axon regeneration in the injured optic nerve and elsewhere in the central and peripheral nervous systems. We also review the role of ArmC10, a newly discovered Ocm receptor,

Neutrophil biology in injuries and diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

The role of inflammation in nervous system injury and disease is attracting increased attention. Much of that research has focused on microglia in the central nervous system (CNS) and macrophages in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Much less attention has been paid to the roles played by neutrophils. Neutrophils are part of the granulocyte subtype of myeloid cells. These cells, like macrophages, originate and differentiate in the bone marrow from which they enter the circulation. After tissue damage or infection, neutrophils are the first immune cells to infiltrate into tissues and are dir

Immune-mediated diseases involving central and peripheral nervous systems.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In addition to combined central and peripheral demyelination, other immune diseases could involve both the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). METHODS: To identify immune-mediated diseases responsible for symptomatic combined central/peripheral nervous system involvement (ICCPs), we conducted a multicentric retrospective study and assessed clinical, electrophysiological, and radiological features of patients fulfilling our ICCP criteria. RESULTS: Thirty patients (20 males) were included and followed during a median of 79.5 months (interqu

Interfaces with the peripheral nervous system for the control of a neuroprosthetic limb: a review.

The field of prosthetics has been evolving and advancing over the past decade, as patients with missing extremities are expecting to control their prostheses in as normal a way as possible. Scientists have attempted to satisfy this expectation by designing a connection between the nervous system of the patient and the prosthetic limb, creating the field of neuroprosthetics. In this paper, we broadly review the techniques used to bridge the patient's peripheral nervous system to a prosthetic limb. First, we describe the electrical methods including myoelectric systems, surgical innovations and

Metastatic Complications of Cancer Involving the Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems.

Neurologic complications of cancer may involve both the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system manifesting as brain, leptomeningeal, intramedullary, intradural, epidural, plexus, and skull base metastases. Excluding brain involvement, neurologic complications affecting these other sites are relatively infrequent, but collectively they affect more than 25% of patients with metastatic cancer causing significant morbidity and mortality. Early diagnosis and intervention optimize quality of life and improve survival.

Central and Peripheral Nervous System Involvement in a Patient with Scrub Infection.

Scrub infection is an important differential of undifferentiated febrile illness in the subtropical and tropical countries. Neurological complications of scrub infection have a varied spectrum of presentation involving both the central nervous system, among which meningitis and meningoencephalitis are the most common presentations. The peripheral nervous system manifestations include Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is not commonly reported. The coexistence of both central and peripheral involvement is rare, and we would like to report a case of a patient who was diagnosed with scrub infection an

Polyarteritis Nodosa in a Cat with Involvement of the Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems.

An 18-month-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat was referred with a history of pyrexia, polyuria and polydypsia, and transient episodes of bilateral hindlimb paralysis. Cardiac evaluation revealed severe systemic hypertension and severe concentric hypertrophy of the left ventricle. One month later the cat had a new episode of hindlimb paralysis with recurrent seizures, and died in status epilepticus. At necropsy examination, the coronary arteries, arcuate renal arteries and common iliac arteries showed marked thickening with nodules segmentally located along the vessels and consequent nar

Neurolymphomatosis of the peripheral nervous system: a case report and review of the literature.

Neurolymphomatosis is a rare neurological syndrome in lymphomas. It is reported as infiltration of peripheral nerves by lymphoma. It is important to distinguish neurolymphomatosis from other types of neuropathies, particularly infectious and inflammatory conditions. However, it is difficult to isolate a cancer-related inflammatory vasculitis and mononeuritis multiplex without definitive histopathologic examination. In this report, we describe a case of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma involving the peroneal nerve and presenting as neurolymphomatosis.

[Peripheral neuropathy with autonomous nervous system involvement in the course of dermatomyositis].

A peripheral neuropathy occurs rarely during the course of an inflammatory myopathy. Once the classical aetiologies of peripheral neuropathies are ruled out, the diagnosis of neuromyositis can be accepted. We report a patient with dermatomyositis who presented a peripheral neuropathy revealed by dysautonomia. The presence of associated vasculitis led us to consider that this constituted the mechanism of the neurological involvement.

Neuroactive steroids: an update of their roles in central and peripheral nervous system.

After five editions, the congress on "Steroids and Nervous System" held in Torino, Italy, represents an important international event for researchers involved in this field aimed to recapitulate mechanisms, physiological and pharmacological effects of neuroactive steroids. The present review introduces manuscripts collected in this supplement issue which are based on new interesting findings such as the influence of sex steroids on cannabinoid-regulated biology, the role of steroids in pain, the importance of co-regulators in steroidal mechanisms and the understanding of new non classical mech

Expression patterns of MLC1 protein in the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Mutations in MLC1 cause megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts (MLC), a disorder characterized clinically by macrocephaly, deterioration of motor functions, epilepsy and mental decline. Recent studies have detected MLC1 mRNA and protein in astroglial processes. In addition, our group previously reported MLC1 expression in some neurons in the adult mouse brain. Here we performed an exhaustive study of the expression pattern of MLC1 in the developing mouse brain by means of optic and electron microscopy. In the central nervous system, MLC1 was detected mainly in axonal tracts

Intravascular lymphoma involving the central and peripheral nervous systems in a dog.

A 5-year-old, castrated male mixed-breed dog was presented for paraparesis, ataxia, hyperesthesia, and thrombocytopenia of 5 months' duration and recurrent seizures during the preceding 2 weeks. Multifocal neurological, ophthalmological, pulmonary, and cardiac diseases were identified. Magnetic resonance imaging and cerebrospinal fluid analysis supported a tentative diagnosis of neoplastic or inflammatory disease. A computed tomography-guided biopsy provided both cytopathological and histopathological evidence of intravascular lymphoma. The disease progressed despite chemotherapy with predniso

Migration and function of a glial subtype in the vertebrate peripheral nervous system.

Glia-axon interactions are essential for the development and function of the nervous system. We combine in vivo imaging and genetics to address the mechanism by which the migration of these cells is coordinated during embryonic development. Using stable transgenic lines, we have followed the migration of one subset of glial cells and their target axons in living zebrafish embryos. These cells coalesce at an early stage and remain coupled throughout migration, with axons apparently pathfinding for glia. Mutant analysis demonstrates that axons provide instructive cues that are sufficient to cont

[Pathology of paraneoplastic syndromes of the central and peripheral nervous systems and muscle ].

The paraneoplastic neurological syndromes are alterations associated with neoplasias. However, they are not caused by metastases or complications such as infections, vascular disorders, metabolic or nutritional alterations or secondary effect of treatment. The paraneoplastic syndromes are often associated with the creation of autoantibodies against antigens produced by the neoplastia, but also may be against other cells or target molecules of the patient. Sometimes, especially with antibodies directed against cell membrane proteins, there is a close relationship between the antibody and the ta

Mechanisms of action of dopamine in the peripheral nervous system of chicks and rats.

The effects and mechanisms of action of dopamine on the lower oesophagus and expansor secundariorum muscle (ESM) of chicks and on the bladder of rat have been examined. Dopamine contracted the lower oesophagus in a concentration-related fashion but failed to contract the muscle from chicks pretreated with reserpine or p-chlorophenylalanine. Contraction of the ESM by dopamine was antagonized by prazosin but not by propranolol. Supersensitivity of the ESM to dopamine observed 3 or 28 days after surgical denervation of the muscle was comparable. Dopamine did not exert any agonist effect on the ra
