Obsessive-compulsive disorder is varyingly associated with cognitive impairment, that is, deficits in spatial working memory, although it seems unlikely that this is generalised across all domains of functioning. Further, it is unclear whether symptoms will respond to potentially novel, non-serotonergic drugs that have shown promise as so-called cognitive enhancers. Here, we studied low (Norm-N; n = 31) and compulsive-like high (Comp-H; n = 34) stereotypical deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii) to establish (1) whether there is a relationship between stereotypical intensity and working m

To document the expansion of human babesiosis in Connecticut, we analyzed reservoir host sera for seroreactivity to Babesia microti Franca and reviewed Connecticut human surveillance case data collected during 2001-2010. Sera from white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus Rafinesque, from 10 towns in 5 counties, collected at 4-7-yr periods between 2001 and 2010, were tested for total immunoglobulins. The prevalence of B. microti-positive mice was compared with confirmed and probable human case reports tabulated by the Connecticut Department of Public Health. The highest babesiosis and rodent sero

Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman & Corwin was confirmed at Long Point, Lake Erie, Ontario, on small mammals and white-tailed deer and by dragging for ticks. Mean intensities of up to 16.2 larvae and 2.1 nymphs were found on Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque), with an overall prevalence of infestation up to 92%. Adult I. dammini (101.6 +/- 77.63) (mean +/- SD) were found on 8 white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmerman). The seasonal pattern of recovery of ticks from hosts and the environment resembled that described elsewhere. I. dammini was not found on 952 small mammals trap

A study was designed to test the insect development inhibitors fluazuron and lufenuron for the control of fleas on sylvatic rodents as an adjunct to the control of plague. Historical data of flea burden from 15 prior years of study at Chuchupate Campground, Ventura County, CA, were compared to six years of treatment period data to determine if fluazuron and lufenuron were effective in controlling flea densities. The insect development inhibitors, delivered systemically via a feed cube, reduced flea loads effectively on California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi), long-eared woodrats (N

BACKGROUND: Some deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii) exhibit various phenotypes of persistent behaviors. It remains unknown if and how said phenotypes associate with early-life and adult cognitive perturbations, and whether potentially cognitive enhancing drugs might modify such associations. Here, we explored the longitudinal relationship between early-life behavioral flexibility and the expression of persistent behavior in adulthood. We also investigated how said phenotypes might associate with working memory in adulthood, and how this association might respond to chronic exposure to

The abrupt and focal emergence of an infestation of sarcoptid mites was documented during long-term studies of populations of the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque), on Nantucket Island, MA. From 1985 to 1996, > 1,000 trap nights were recorded each year in 2 permanently situated sampling grids that were sampled monthly from April through November. In April 1995, prominent excrescences were first noted on the pinnae of mice trapped solely from 1 of the 2 sites. Histopathology of the lesions suggested infestation with Notoedres spp. Of 140 unique captures of mice during 1995-19

1. The pineal melatonin content of photoperiod responsive and photoperiod non-responsive male deer mice was assessed. 2. Pineal melatonin content did not differ between short-day mice with regressed testes or those that maintained their reproductive systems. 3. These data suggest that differential phasing of melatonin release or post-pineal mechanisms are responsible for the differential responsiveness to day length among deer mice.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) is an increasing public health threat in temperate zones of the northern hemisphere, yet relatively few methods exist for reducing LD risk in endemic areas. Disrupting the LD transmission cycle in nature is a promising avenue for risk reduction. This experimental study evaluated the efficacy of fluralaner, a recent oral acaricide with a long duration of effect in dogs, for killing Ixodes scapularis ticks in Peromyscus maniculatus mice, a known wildlife reservoir for Borrelia burgdorferi in nature.
METHODS: We assigned 87 mice to 3 fluralaner treatment groups (50

This study was undertaken to determine which rodent species serve as primary reservoirs for the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi in commonly occurring woodland types in inland areas of northwestern California, and to examine whether chaparral or grassland serve as source habitats for dispersal of B. burgdorferi- or B. bissettii-infected rodents into adjacent woodlands. The western gray squirrel (Sciurus griseus) was commonly infected with B. burgdorferi in oak woodlands, whereas examination of 30 dusky-footed woodrats (Neotoma fuscipes) and 280 Peromyscus spp. mice from 13 widely s

Studies were conducted over a four-county area of northwest Alabama to determine the association of eastern cottontail rabbits with Dermacentor variabilis, the eastern United States vector of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. A secondary objective was to compare infestations of this tick on rabbits with infestations on commonly encountered rodent species as a means of determining the relative importance of each in the disease transmission cycle. These epidemiologic surveys were conducted in response to reported fatal cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in two counties of the study area. From 202

We compared various methods for detecting Babesia microti infection in white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) captured in enzootic regions of Massachusetts. The most sensitive method tested involved inoculating blood from wild rodents into hamsters. One month postinoculation proved to be the optimal time for microscopically examining blood of inoculated hamsters. With this method, as few as 300 organisms produced patent infection. Prior splenectomy of hamsters did not increase susceptibility to infection. For direct study of captured animals, a Giemsa-stained, thin blood-film prepared from th

Seventy of 190 (37%) mammals, representing 14 rodent and 2 lagomorph species examined in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge in southern Nevada, were parasitized by sucking lice (Phthiraptera: Anoplura). Twelve species of sucking lice (5 species of Hoplopleruridae, 7 species of Polyplacidae) were recorded. Nine of these louse species (Hoplopleura difficilis, Hoplopleura ferrisi, Hoplopleura onychomydis, Hoplopleura reithrodontomyis, Fahrenholzia reducta, Haemodipsus setoni, Neohaematopinus citellinus, Neohaematopinus neotomae, and Polyplax auricularis) are reported from Nevada for the first ti

There is still little emphasis within One Health on building linkages between human health, changes in biodiversity, and ecosystem perturbation. We use the Great Plains, a system of substantial One Health concern, to illustrate a persistent data challenge to this issue, through the lens of small mammals, parasitic vectors of disease, and long-term ecosystem change. We assembled specimens of small mammals to assess species turnover coupled with mitochondrial sequencing to examine intra-specific diversity of the dominant species. We also assessed ectoparasite infection rates and related all to h

Due to the ongoing expansion of Ixodes scapularis (blacklegged tick) throughout the northeastern and midwestern United States, there is need to identify the role wildlife hosts play in the establishment and maintenance of tick populations. To quantify and synthesize the patterns of I. scapularis and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto and sensu lato prevalence relative to wildlife hosts, we reviewed the findings of independent studies conducted throughout the United States. We performed a comprehensive literature search from 1970 to 2017 using the ISS Web of Science Core Collection and the keyw

The interaction of immature black-legged ticks, Ixodes scapularis, with reptiles and rodents was investigated in various woodland habitats in the coastal plain of North Carolina. Reptiles were sampled from April 1 to September 30, 1991. No ticks were found on 95 specimens representing 16 species of snakes. Ticks were found on 54 (36.7%) of 147 lizards. I. scapularis was the only tick recovered from lizards. Some lizards were collected in drift fence traps each month of the study except August. Capture rates averaged one lizard per 16 trap-days. Larvae and nymphs of I. scapularis were removed f

In the Northeast and upper Midwest of the United States, Babesia microti and Borrelia burgdorferi use Ixodes scapularis ticks as vector and Peromyscus leucopus mice as major reservoir host. We previously established, in a 5-year field trial, that a reservoir-targeted outer surface protein A vaccine reduces the prevalence of B. burgdorferi-infected ticks. We accessed ticks and mouse blood samples collected during the trial, extracted total DNA, and amplified the B. microti 18S rRNA gene. Vaccine deployment reduced the prevalence of ticks coinfected with B. microti and that of mice infected with

Breathing and the hypoxic ventilatory response are vital determinants of gas exchange and metabolism in hypoxia. High-altitude natives are valuable models for elucidating how plasticity and evolutionary adaptation can shape the control of breathing in chronic hypoxia. Here, we review studies on this issue in deer mice, a species found from sea level to over 4300 m elevation. Distinct populations from high and low altitudes have been bred in captivity and compared in common conditions of normoxia or hypoxia. Low-altitude populations exhibit ventilatory acclimatization to hypoxia (VAH), in which

High-altitude environments are cold and hypoxic, and many high-altitude natives have evolved changes in respiratory physiology that improve O2 uptake in hypoxia as adults. Altricial mammals undergo a dramatic metabolic transition from ectothermy to endothermy in early post-natal life, which may influence the ontogenetic development of respiratory traits at high altitude. We examined the developmental changes in respiratory and haematological traits in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) native to high altitude, comparing the respiratory responses to progressive hypoxia between highland and lowl

From February 1993 through October 1994, 382 cotton mice Peromyscus gossypinus were live-trapped and examined for fleas on St. Catherines Island, Liberty County, Georgia. Orchopeas leucopus was the only species of flea collected, with an overall prevalence of 27% and a mean intensity of 3.8. This flea was more abundant on cotton mice during the cooler months, with peak infestation indices recorded in March 1993 and in January 1994. Five species of fleas (Polygenis gwyni, Stenoponia americana, Ctenophthalmus pseudagyrtes, Peromyscopsylla scotti, and O. leucopus) were collected from 29 cotton mi

Host-pathogen interactions are an important factor shaping species' evolutionary trajectories and distribution in space. Because high elevations generally have fewer and less virulent pathogens, movement from low to high elevations may result in changes to immunological selection pressures. However, the extent to which changes in immune exposure have interacted with organismal adaptation to high elevations is not well characterized. We used North American deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) to investigate whether adaptation to high elevations has modified immunity using a conventional immune ch
