Oculo-palatal-cerebral syndrome: a second case.

Oculo-palato-cerebral syndrome is an extremely rare disorder consisting of low birth weight, microcephaly, short stature, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, microphthalmia, large ears, small hands and feet, cleft palate, joint hypermobility, developmental delay, and cerebral atrophy. There has been one report of a consanguineous family with three affected children, suggesting autosomal recessive inheritance. We report on the second case of this disorder. Our patient, a 2-year-old boy, had growth delay, microcephaly, bilateral persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous with right microphth

Persistent Fetal Vasculature.

During development, the fetal vasculature nourishes the developing lens and retina, and it subsequently regresses after the formation of the retinal vessels. Persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) occurs as a result of a failure of fetal ocular vasculature to undergo normal programmed involution, which leads to blindness or serious loss of vision. Persistent fetal vasculature is responsible for as much as 5% of childhood blindness in western countries. The regulatory mechanisms responsible for fetal vascular regress remain obscure, as do the underlying causes of the failure of regression. Because

Leukocoria in children.

The aim of this study was to establish the causes of leukocoria in pediatric patients in a tertiary hospital environment. All patients younger than 10 years who presented with leukocoria between January 1, 1999, and December 31, 2000, were included in the study; 39 (55%) patients were boys and 32 (45%) patients were girls. Sixty percent of the patients who presented with leukocoria had congenital cataract (18% unilateral and 42% bilateral). Other causes included retinoblastoma (11% unilateral and 7% bilateral), retinal detachment (2.8% unilateral and 1.4% bilateral), bilateral persistent hyper

Retrospective Analysis of Surgical Outcomes on Axial Length Elongation in Eyes with Posterior and Combined Persistent Fetal Vasculature.

This study aims to investigate the outcomes and risk factors associated with poor vision (vision less than counting fingers, 2.0 logMAR, Snellen vision 20/2000) in patients with posterior or combined persistent fetal vasculature (PFV), with or without surgery. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who were diagnosed with PFV from January 2008 to April 2021. We included 51 eyes of 44 patients who presented with PFV, of which 38 eyes underwent surgical correction (pars plicata/plana vitrectomy, with or without lensectomy, and intraocular lens implantation) at the median age

Prenatal ultrasonographic detection of ophthalmic diseases.

Four patients with prenatal sonographic findings suggestive of ophthalmic pathology were detected in utero. The definitive diagnoses of infantile fibrosarcoma, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous/persistent fetal vasculature, Fraser syndrome, and microphthalmia with coloboma and retrobulbar cyst were made postnatally. High-resolution intrauterine sonograms expedited ophthalmic referral and influenced prenatal planning.

Differentials and approach to leukocoria.

Leukocoria is an important clinical examination finding as it can be a sign of significant intraocular pathology, with the most common being retinoblastoma and congenital cataracts. The Brückner test is a quick, easy, and inexpensive way to assess the red reflex. When leukocoria is suspected, prompt referral to an ophthalmologist is necessary for further evaluation.

Bilateral retinal vascular hypoplasia associated with persistence of the primary vitreous: a new clinical entity?

Three infant boys with a bilateral congenital retinopathy characterized by retinal vascular hypoplasia and persistence of the primary vitreous are described. The infants were healthy and had no non-ocular physical abnormalities. None had histories of prematurity or low birth weight. Family histories were negative to similar retinopathy, and the fundi of all examined blood relatives were normal. The described congenital retinopathy is compared and contrasted with persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, Norrie's disease, idiopathic retinal dysplasia, familial exudative vitreoretinopathy, retin
