Connected and confined: memories of digital experiences in relation to autonomy, competence, and relatedness during the COVID-19 pandemic.

UNLABELLED: The COVID-19 pandemic drove rapid digital transformation and disrupted the ways people could meet their basic psychological needs of autonomy, relatedness and competence. This study explored how people across six European countries (the UK, Poland, Czechia, Germany, Switzerland and Spain) recalled the role of digital technology (DT) in fulfilling these needs. 148 semi-structured interviews were conducted after the pandemic and were analysed using thematic analysis. The analysis showed that DTs were recalled as both supporting and frustrating the satisfaction of all three psychologi

Breastfeeding Experience Among Women Living With HIV: A Global Qualitative Evidence Synthesis.

Infant feeding decisions among women living with HIV (WLHIV) represent a complex intersection of public health guidance, personal values, and lived experiences. Although antiretroviral therapy has reduced vertical transmission risks, these decisions remain fraught with challenges. This qualitative evidence synthesis reviewed 41 studies published up to February 2025, exploring WLHIV's breastfeeding experiences through thematic analysis. Four overarching themes emerged: (a) the contradiction of stigma in breastfeeding and formula feeding, (b) breastfeeding for health benefits versus formula feed

The interpreter's role and deaf students' autonomy in mainstream classrooms.

This article explores the interpreter's role and approaches to working with deaf students as seen from deaf individuals' and interpreters' perspectives. A group of 41 formerly mainstreamed deaf individuals and interpreters offered insights into how the interpreter's role in mainstream classrooms influences deaf student autonomy and participation. This research illustrates the significance of autonomy for mainstreamed deaf students and suggests a correlation between the interpreter's role and deaf students' perceived autonomy in the classroom. In addition, the findings suggest that deaf student

The Indirect Relationship between Prosociality in the Workplace and Employee Well-Being: Testing Multiple Mediators.

Employee well-being has become an urgent issue due to the consequences of the pandemic crisis. Studies have suggested that prosociality could increase well-being, but we do not have a clear understanding about the mechanisms through which prosociality is related to well-being. The study aimed to identify some of these mechanisms. Building on the prosociality literature, we proposed and simultaneously tested five theory-driven mediators: the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs (relatedness, autonomy, and competence), rumination, and work meaningfulness. The study sample consisted of 2

The development of legal rights for intersex persons: Part II: Advancement.

Having addressed the nature and complexity of intersexuality including commonalities with and differences from the transgender condition, we now address major legal challenges to the bisexual status quo through the legal advancement of rights for intersexual persons. Identified here are four domains in which the rights of intersex individuals are being advanced through litigation and legislation: (a) Sex assignment at birth and in early childhood, including the individual's right to consent and self-determination and to be spared from surgery that is not needed for medical reasons; (b) the rig

Gender Affirming Hormone Treatment for Trans Adolescents: A Four Principles Analysis.

Gender affirming hormone treatment is an important part of the care of trans adolescents which enables them to develop the secondary sexual characteristics congruent with their identified genders. There is an increasing amount of empirical evidence showing the benefits of gender affirming hormone treatment for psychological health and social well-being in this population. However, in several countries, access to gender affirming hormone treatment for trans adolescents has recently been severely restricted. While much of the opposition to gender affirming hormone treatment for trans adolescents

Financial Decision-Making Capacity and Patient-Centered Discharge.

An ethically sound discharge from the hospital can be impeded by a number of factors, including a lack of payor for a patient's care, a lack of appropriate discharge options, and a lack of authority to sign a patient into a long-term facility. In some cases, the primary barrier involves the patient's lack of financial decision-making capacity. When a patient's income comes primarily from government assistance, financial decision making is connected to both the individual's well-being and to fair allocation of resources. Taking away another person's financial independence is a substantial intru

Navigating family life in the face of parental cancer: a qualitative study.

PurposeParental cancer can significantly impact family dynamics, particularly for adolescents and young adults (AYAs), who face the developmental task of balancing autonomy and connectedness. As cancer incidence rises globally, more AYAs are confronted with the challenges of parental illness. While most research focuses on individual psychological outcomes, less is known about how families function as a unit under such stress. This study aimed to gain deeper insight into family functioning, with a specific focus on autonomy, connectedness, and communication, in the face of parental cancer.Meth

Bidirectional associations between parental need support, conflict with parents, and adolescents' autonomy: A daily diary study.

Autonomy is a core developmental task of adolescence, shaped by daily parent-adolescent interactions involving need support and conflict. Guided by Self-Determination Theory, this study examined the bidirectional day-to-day associations between adolescents' perceived parental need support, conflict with parents, and autonomy. Using a daily diary design, this study employed a Dynamic Structural Equation Modeling on a sample of 286 Dutch adolescents (Mage = 11.60, SD = 0.47 at Wave 1), who were followed for one week in four measurement waves (28 days total). The results indicated that, at the wi

Perspectives of older adults with a chronic condition on functioning, social participation and health: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Problems with mobility, functioning and social participation make living independently difficult for frail older adults. To continue living independently, therapy adherence is a prerequisite. The causes for non-adherence among older adults are multiple and complex, which is why insight into older adults' perspectives regarding their functioning is an essential factor to increase therapy adherence. This study investigates the perspectives of older adults on their functioning, social participation and health, and the factors influencing these elements. METHODS: We conducted a qualit

Passive-submissive and active-emotional trait dependency: evidence for a two-factor model.

Dependency plays an important role in both normal and abnormal personality, but the construct remains loosely defined, both in clinical practice and the research literature. Moreover, although a number of measures purport to measure trait dependency, little agreement exists as to the structure of dependency within or across these instruments. Furthermore, what constitutes the low end of trait dependency remains unclear. Five hundred nine undergraduates completed a battery of 14 dependency scales and subscales, a subset of whom (n=322) also completed a broad measure of personality pathology (SN

[The dignity of older people put to the test in critical care].

End-of-life care is often approached from the perspective of dignity and respect for autonomy, which enable individuals to choose how to spend their final moments. However, in a critical care setting, where older people may be incapable of making decisions or may become temporarily so due to an altered level of consciousness, the burden of decision-making falls on their loved ones and the medical team. How is dignity preserved when treatment choices clash with socio-cultural issues and the sometimes conflicting interests of those involved? Through short accounts drawn from a qualitative study

Against Moral Panic and Citation Fiction: A Critique of "Panem, Corticoids and Circenses" and a Proposal for Editorial Gatekeeping on Reference Integrity.

The proposed Enhanced Games have become a convenient stage for bioethical sermonising about risk, authenticity, and the "spirit of sport". This is epitomized by a recent article arguing that institutionalizing pharmacological enhancement under the "pretence of medical supervision and personal autonomy" would redefine human excellence in "purely biochemical terms", erode ethical norms, normalize doping, and burden public health systems. The present paper offers a two-level response. First, I criticise the argument on its merits. Its central claims rely on rhetorical inflation, false dichotomies

The Ethical Tightrope of Physical and Environmental Restraint in ICU: A Balancing Act.

Physical and environmental restraints are synonymous with intensive care unit (ICU) practices in many countries around the world. The ICU environment is highly complex, and it is essential to maintain patient safety, but this can often be to the detriment of patients' autonomy. This article examines the ethical challenges that arise from the use of physical and environmental restraints in the intensive care unit (ICU). The article provides insights from both the patient and clinician perspectives using a real-life-informed fictional case and aims to shed light on the intricate ethical landscap

Navigating ethical dilemmas during child and adolescent vaccinations: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination prevents millions of deaths each year; however, ethical dilemmas persist in vaccinating children and adolescents. This scoping review explores how healthcare professionals (HCPs) navigate these ethical challenges, focusing on commonly encountered dilemmas, contributing factors, strategies to support decision-making, and the role of biomedical ethics principles. METHODS: This review was conducted following the JBI methodology and Arksey and O'Malley framework. The Population, Concept, and Context (PCC) framework guided the research question. How Should Physicians Manage Traumatic Injuries Sustained During Incarceration?

Patients who are incarcerated experience severely restricted autonomy and are thus extremely vulnerable. This commentary on a case offers longitudinal, long-term postsurgical trauma-informed care recommendations and starts with a working assumption that, when injuries sustained during incarceration require surgery and hospitalization, patients' rights to evidence-based standard of care that would be given to any other patient should not be compromised. Yet surgical care of traumatically injured patients who are incarcerated can be ethically and clinically complex due to their status as wards o
