Risk factors for intellectual disability in children with spastic cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive disorder of posture and movement caused by prenatal or perinatal lesions of the brain. Children with CP are also at increased risk of other disabilities, for example, intellectual disability. Previous studies suggest the risk of intellectual disability varies in complex ways according to the type of motor impairment and perinatal factors such as gestational age. OBJECTIVE: To determine the patterns of risk of intellectual disability in children with spastic CP. DESIGN: Cross-sectional, population-based study using the Northern Ireland Cere

Treatment of behavioral problems in intellectually disabled adult patients with epilepsy.

Behavioral disorders are common in people with epilepsy and intellectual disability. Although in some genetic disorders behavioral problems are part of the established phenotype, they may also be a manifestation of underlying physical or mental illness, or may be unrecognized seizure activity. In light of this, assessment of behavioral disorders should take into account person factors such as the physical health and mental state of the person and environmental factors such as the quality of their interactions with carers and their living conditions. Video-electroencephalography ( EEG) is recom

[Psychotherapy in intellectual disability. Theoretical background and implementation].

BACKGROUND: Every third person with intellectual disability suffers from additional mental health problems, among others phobic disorders. Yet we do not know whether psychotherapeutic methods that are effective in the normal population are applicable to people with intellectual disabilities. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We give a survey of the development and the present state of the art of psychotherapy, particularly with regard to phobic disorders in intellectual disability. Therapeutic recommendations described in the literature will be evaluated in a case study of one patient. RESULTS: The conf

Acquisition of Digital Literacy Skills in Learners With Developmental Disabilities.

Learners with developmental disabilities often encounter difficulties in performing daily activities that involve digital platforms, operating systems, applications, and other digital tools. Considering the growing importance of digital literacy, we examined the effectiveness of the clustered forward chaining (CFC) procedure in teaching digital transaction skills to three adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). In the context of a multiple-baselines-across-skills design with between-participant replications, we taught participants four digital transaction tasks. The

The impact of an adult intellectual disability screening questionnaire on service providers and users.

BACKGROUND: One contributor to the health inequalities that people with an intellectual disability face is failure to identify their intellectual disability. The Learning Disability Screening Questionnaire (LDSQ) can identify adults who are likely to have an intellectual disability, but little is known about its impact. METHODS: A modified Delphi approach (literature search, interviews with staff and those using services [n = 28], and completion of an online survey by professionals [n = 29]) was used to develop a framework to evaluate the impact of the LDSQ. RESULTS: Items endorsed by 60% or

Use of blacklight as visual stimulation for people with profound mental retardation and multiple handicaps.

Nineteen people with profound mental retardation and multiple handicaps who lived in a large ICF/MR facility were given visual stimulation in a blacklight environment. A comparison was made between conditions of blacklight and normal light for tracking and reaching. The students performed reliably higher under conditions of blacklight. In the blacklight environment, which removed distracting stimuli and exaggerated critical features, students were able to respond better to visual cues.

A systematic review of community psychosocial group interventions for adults with intellectual disabilities and mental health conditions.

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual disabilities have a high risk of developing mental ill-health. Treatment is often neglected and diagnosis is misattributed to a person's disability. Standard psychosocial interventions can improve a person's well-being. This review aimed to understand what interventions are being delivered, any benefits, and future recommendations. METHODS: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed, and the review registered with PROSPERO-CRD42020160254. Dementia in people with severe or profound intellectual (and multiple) disabilities: Focus group research into relevance, symptoms and training needs.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating dementia from baseline level of functioning is difficult among people with severe/profound intellectual (and multiple) disabilities. Moreover, studies on observable dementia symptoms are scarce. This study examined (a) the relevance of dementia diagnosis, (b) observable symptoms and (c) training/information needs. METHODS: Four explorative focus groups were held with care professionals and family members who have experience with people with severe/profound intellectual (and multiple) disabilities (≥40 years) and decline/dementia. RESULTS: Thematic analysis showed

The evaluation of a training course to enhance intellectual disability awareness amongst law enforcement officers: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Disability awareness training is mandated by the United Nations Convention on People with Disabilities (UNCRPD), but there is a paucity of evidence regarding the systematic evaluation of the effectiveness of such training. This study describes the evaluation of a pilot intellectual disability awareness programme for law enforcement officers (LEOs) in Ireland. METHODS: Pre-and post-training Likert scales and a semi-structured survey were used to evaluate the effectiveness of an intellectual disabilities awareness programme delivered to LEOs. Quantitative differences in Likert score

The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection among inhabitants and healthy employees of institutes for the intellectually disabled.

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection varies in the Netherlands from 5% in children to about 50% in the elderly. In the institutionalized intellectually disabled, a high prevalence of infection has been reported. It is unknown whether there are specific risk factors to obtain H. pylori infection in this population, and whether employees of such institutes are at risk for H. pylori infection. METHODS: Therefore, we analyzed the seroprevalence of H. pylori antibodies by ELISA among 338 intellectually disabled inhabitants and 254 employees of two institutes. H. pylori-posit

The Voluntary Sterilisation Act: Best Interests, Caregivers, and Disability Rights.

How can caregivers' interests be balanced with disability rights in decisions about whether to sterilise an intellectually disabled person? This question is considered in the context of Singapore, a commonwealth country that lacks a test case. Singapore has a lesser-known history of eugenics, and has struck an uneasy compromise between communitarian values and obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in recent years. This article provides an overview of Singaporean law under the Voluntary Sterilisation Act 1974 and the Mental Capacity Ac

Quality of life measurement tools for people with dementia and intellectual disabilities: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Adults with intellectual disabilities are an at-risk group of developing dementia. In the absence of a cure for dementia, emphasis on treatment is the promotion of Quality of life (QoL). The aim of this review is to identify and describe QoL tools for people with intellectual disabilities and dementia. METHOD: A systematic review was carried out using 10 databases and papers from up to March year 2021. RESULTS: Two instruments were identified and examined. The QoL in late-stage dementia, which showed evidence of good levels of internal consistency, intra-rater reliability, test-r

Service use among school leavers with severe learning difficulties: the views of carers.

School leaving is a time when difficult decisions have to be taken. Difficulties are likely to be particularly complex when the school leaver has severe learning difficulties. Carers of 61 young people living in one East London Health District were interviewed about their child's experience of service use at around the time of school leaving. The timing of school leaving appears to have been well handled, and the experience of those who went on to further education was positive. The school social work service was greatly appreciated. On the debit side, many informants were critical of the qual
