Validity of low-contrast letter acuity as a visual performance outcome measure for multiple sclerosis.

Low-contrast letter acuity (LCLA) has emerged as the leading outcome measure to assess visual disability in multiple sclerosis (MS) research. As visual dysfunction is one of the most common manifestations of MS, sensitive visual outcome measures are important in examining the effect of treatment. Low-contrast acuity captures visual loss not seen in high-contrast visual acuity (HCVA) measurements. These issues are addressed by the MS Outcome Assessments Consortium (MSOAC), including representatives from advocacy organizations, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), European Medicines Agency (EMA),

Prevalence of Vision Impairment in South-East Asia and Oceania in 2020 Magnitude and Temporal Trends.

AIM: To determine the prevalence and trends in vision impairment in South-East Asia and Oceania over the past 30 years. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of medical literature and employed hierarchical models to estimate the prevalence of vision impairment (VI) in 2020 in South-East Asia and Oceania in those 50 + years of age. We estimated the prevalence (with 95% uncertainty intervals [UIs]) of mild VI (presenting visual acuity between ≥6/18 and <6/12), moderate and severe VI (MSVI) (presenting visual acuity less than 6/18 to 3/60), and blindness (presenting visual acuity less than 3

AZAR eye and vision cohort study.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), currently, 2.2 billion people are living with visual impairment worldwide, of which almost half could have been prevented. There are both modifiable and unmodifiable factors leading to visual disability and, ultimately, blindness. Several population-based studies in different parts of Iran have tried to determine these factors concerning their specific population and environment-related characteristics. AZAR Eye and Vision cohort is the second-largest cohort study in the whole country. AZAR Eye and Vision cohort is the ophthalmologic branch of AZAR

Retinotopic-like maps of spatial sound in primary 'visual' cortex of blind human echolocators.

The functional specializations of cortical sensory areas were traditionally viewed as being tied to specific modalities. A radically different emerging view is that the brain is organized by task rather than sensory modality, but it has not yet been shown that this applies to primary sensory cortices. Here, we report such evidence by showing that primary 'visual' cortex can be adapted to map spatial locations of sound in blind humans who regularly perceive space through sound echoes. Specifically, we objectively quantify the similarity between measured stimulus maps for sound eccentricity and

Prevalence, incidence and risk factors of visual disability in patients with exudative age-related macular degeneration: a nationwide population-based study in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of irreversible visual loss in the elderly. Although anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy has improved the visual prognosis of exudative AMD, a considerable proportion of patients still develop severe vision loss. However, real-world data on the prevalence, incidence and risk factors for visual disability among patients with exudative AMD remain limited. This study investigates the prevalence, incidence and risk factors for visual disability among patients with exudative AMD. METHODS: This nationwide, popu

What do blind people "see" with retinal prostheses? Observations and qualitative reports of epiretinal implant users.

INTRODUCTION: Retinal implants have now been approved and commercially available for certain clinical populations for over 5 years, with hundreds of individuals implanted, scores of them closely followed in research trials. Despite these numbers, however, few data are available that would help us answer basic questions regarding the nature and outcomes of artificial vision: what do recipients see when the device is turned on for the first time, and how does that change over time? METHODS: Semi-structured interviews and observations were undertaken at two sites in France and the UK with 16 rec

The relationship between visual function, duration and main causes of vision loss and falls in older people with low vision.

BACKGROUND: Falls are an alarming health problem and a major cause of injury among the elderly. The healthcare cost associated with falls is considerable. Visual acuity has been found to be an independent risk factor for falls; however, the results are not unanimous. Moreover, other aspects of visual function such as visual field, contrast sensitivity and depth perception have not been adequately investigated in relation to falls. The aim of this study, therefore, was to determine the relationship between visual function, duration, and main causes of visual impairment, and falls in individuals

An Enhanced Transportation System for People of Determination.

Visually Impaired Persons (VIPs) have difficulty in recognizing vehicles used for navigation. Additionally, they may not be able to identify the bus to their desired destination. However, the bus bay in which the designated bus stops has not been analyzed in the existing literature. Thus, a guidance system for VIPs that identifies the correct bus for transportation is presented in this paper. Initially, speech data indicating the VIP's destination are pre-processed and converted to text. Next, utilizing the Arctan Gradient-activated Recurrent Neural Network (ArcGRNN) model, the number of bays

Comprehensive Review: High-Performance Positioning Systems for Navigation and Wayfinding for Visually Impaired People.

The global increase in the population of Visually Impaired People (VIPs) underscores the rapidly growing demand for a robust navigation system to provide safe navigation in diverse environments. State-of-the-art VIP navigation systems cannot achieve the required performance (accuracy, integrity, availability, and integrity) because of insufficient positioning capabilities and unreliable investigations of transition areas and complex environments (indoor, outdoor, and urban). The primary reason for these challenges lies in the segregation of Visual Impairment (VI) research within medical and en

Exercises to improve directional sound recognition by visually impaired users heading to the workplace.

Moving is an integral part of everyday life and applies to accessing the workplace, attending a health centre or meeting friends. Determination of the source of sound may be important when a visually impaired person is moving around. This allows to navigate, but also provides important information about potential danger. Sound exercises have been prepared to support the ability to recognize the direction of sound and to learn about the problems associated with it. The research version of the app was prepared covering 12 situations related to three static and nine dynamic sources of sounds. All
