Perfectionism in patients with eating disorders: The role of metacognitive beliefs and repetitive negative thinking.

INTRODUCTION: Using the Self-Regulatory Executive Function model as a basis, this study explored whether, in patients with eating disorders (EDs), metacognitions and repetitive negative thinking are associated with higher levels of perfectionisms. METHODS: One hundred twenty-three outpatients with EDs were recruited. Perfectionism, metacognitive beliefs, worry, rumination, anger rumination, affective and eating symptoms were assessed. Correlation and hierarchal regression analyses were run. RESULTS: Higher endorsement of positive beliefs about worry was associated with higher levels of 'pers

Can an intervention designed to reduce repetitive negative thinking alter the response to a psychosocial stressor? A randomized controlled study.

Prior research suggests that repetitive negative thinking (RNT) negatively impacts mental health by intensifying and prolonging emotional reactivity to stress. This study investigated whether an intervention designed to reduce RNT alters emotional reactivity. Young adults with high trait RNT (N = 79) were randomly allocated to an RNT-focused intervention (smartphone app-based, 10 days) or a waiting list before exposure to a standardized stressor. The pre-registered analysis did not reveal a significant condition * time interaction for negative affect. However, exploratory analyses showed that

Investigating the transdiagnostic potential of rumination in relation to Cluster B personality disorder symptoms.

This study examined several forms of repetitive negative thinking in relation to measures of Cluster B disorders to identify unique and co-occurring cognitive mechanisms contributing to these symptom presentations. MTurk participants (N = 725; 53% men; 76% White) completed categorical and dimensional trait-based measures of Cluster B disorders alongside six measures of rumination and worry. Oversampling strategies were used during participant recruitment to obtain a sample with clinically relevant personality features. Path analyses examined each form of repetitive negative thinking in relatio

Unveiling the power of optimism: Exploring behavioral and neuromolecular correlates of alcohol seeking and drinking in rats with biased judgement.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a common psychiatric condition with substantial global mortality. Despite extensive research into its pathophysiology, the cognitive predispositions driving alcohol dependence are less understood. This study explores whether biased cognition, specifically traits of optimism and pessimism, predicts susceptibility to alcohol-seeking behaviors using an animal model. Rats were initially tested for judgement bias through Ambiguous Cue Interpretation tests. Those identified as 'optimistic' or 'pessimistic' were further examined for their tendency to escalate alcohol int

Understanding the experience of rumination and worry: A descriptive qualitative survey study.

OBJECTIVES: Rumination and worry have been implicated in the onset, severity, maintenance and relapse risk of depression and anxiety disorders. Despite this, little research has examined individuals' personal experiences of these processes. This study investigates how individuals experience these processes, which will provide insight into these common features of mental disorders and inform the development of an online intervention specifically targeting rumination and worry. DESIGN: An online qualitative survey was conducted to gain insight into people's personal definitions, experiences wit

Defining the importance of stress reduction in managing cardiovascular disease - the role of exercise.

Traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) have long been the focus of preventive strategies. The impact of family stress, depression, anxiety, hostility, pessimism, job strain, social isolation, lack of purpose in life and social support, are well recognized risks for CVD development, however they are under-appreciated in clinical practice guidelines. The purpose of this article is to review the impact of acute and chronic stress on CVD risk, elaborate repositioning in guidelines, with emphasis to approaches for stress reduction. Regular exercise, both aerobic and resistance, l

[Which psychiatric symptoms must raise suspicion about a possible brain tumor ?].

Many case studies reported psychiatric symptoms during the months before a brain tumor (BT) is diagnosed. Unfortunately, these symptoms are rarely considered as a warning of an organic problem and patients are regularly misoriented towards psychiatric care. Knowing better what psychiatric symptoms look like in patients with a BT would help to diagnose it sooner, which would obviously benefit the patient. The present study aims to quantify the prevalence and further describe psychiatric symptoms occurring before a BT diagnosis. The presence of psychiatric manifestations was systematically inves

Progress towards a hepatitis C virus vaccine.

New drugs to treat hepatitis C are expected to be approved over the next few years which promise to cure nearly all patients. However, due to issues of expected drug resistance, suboptimal activity against diverse hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes and especially because of their extremely high cost, it is unlikely that these HCV drugs will substantially reduce the world's HCV carrier population of around 170 million in the near future or the estimated global incidence of millions of new HCV infections. For these reasons, there is an urgent need to develop a prophylactic HCV vaccine and also to

The emergence of cardiac surgery. I. Personal recollections of the 1940s and 1950s.

"Personal recollections" is given temporal torture back to the pessimism of Aristotle, Bilroth, and Paget. The delightful triumph of the "doers" in Rehn's suture of a stab wound and Souttar's intracardiac mitral valve manipulations is saluted. The brave but disappointing adventures of Doyan, Duval, Tuffier, Carrel, Graham, Beck, and Cutler are noted. The unique role of heart surgery in the change from extirpative to physiologic surgery is illustrated by the spectrum ranging from Blalock and Taussig to intracardiac surgery to pacemakers. The question of "why not?" have cardiac surgery before Wo

Psilocybin for Trauma-Related Disorders.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating, chronic disorder and efficacy rates of current PTSD treatments are underwhelming. There is a critical need for innovative approaches. We provide an overview of trauma and PTSD and cite literature providing converging evidence of the therapeutic potential of psilocybin for PTSD. No study to date has investigated psilocybin or psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) as treatments for PTSD. An open-label study in traumatized AIDS survivors found that PAP reduced PTSD symptoms, attachment anxiety, and demoralization. Several PAP trials show p

[Intracerebral haemorrhage - acute event and chronic disease].

Intracerebral haemorrhage - acute event and chronic disease Abstract. Intracerebral hemorrhage accounts for 10-15% of all strokes and approximately 1'500-2'000 patients per year in Switzerland. Acute treatment by multi-disciplinary experts at certified stroke units and stroke centers is important to provide optimal care. A simple ABC-care bundle (revert anticoagulation, control blood pressure, inform neurosurgeon) decreases poor outcome. Despite a high mortality, one third of patients are functionally independent after intracerebral hemorrhage contradicting widespread pessimism. About 80% of a

The Disease of the Italian Poet Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837): A Case of Juvenile Ankylosing Spondylitis in the 19th Century?

Some authors sustained that the pessimistic thought of the Italian writer and philosopher Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837) may be attributed to his unhappy life, characterized by several health problems. His philosophical theories appear as the result of depressive and melancholic state, related to his precarious health conditions, so limiting their intrinsic values. Several authors formulated various hypotheses on the diseases that Leopardi suffered from and postulated different theories on the cause of his early death. This article assumed that Leopardi may have been affected by juvenile ankylos

Influence of ethnicity and gender on cardiovascular responses to active coping and inhibitory-passive coping challenges.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to evaluate how black and white men and women responded physiologically to specific laboratory challenges. METHODS: Hemodynamic responses to an active coping (evaluated speaking) and two inhibitory-passive coping (mirror tracing, cold pressor) tasks were examined in 138 black and white men and women. RESULTS: Significant ethnicity by gender interactions occurred for the evaluated speaking task. Black men responded with lower blood pressure, cardiac output or heart rate, or both, than black women, white men, and white women, who did not differ from each o

Drinking outcomes of alcohol abusers diagnosed as antisocial personality disorder.

Clinical research and wisdom suggest that alcoholics with antisocial personality (ASPs) disorders have poorer drinking outcomes after treatment than alcoholics without this disorder. The present study challenges this wisdom, suggesting that poor prognosis and response to treatment have been confounded by not covarying on pretreatment drinking measures. Thirty-one ASPs are compared with 118 non-ASPs randomly assigned to extended cognitive behavioral and relationship enhancement treatments. Thirteen to 18 months after treatment initiation, ASPs average more abstinent days than do non-ASPs. Drink

Breaking the cycle: how physical activity disrupts repetitive negative thinking in adolescents through positive affect and cognitive flexibility.

Repetitive negative thinking is a transdiagnostic cognitive process that is particularly prevalent during adolescence, a developmental period characterized by rapid changes in emotional regulation and executive control. Repetitive negative thinking is closely associated with a range of internalizing problems and represents an important risk factor for adolescent depression and anxiety. Given that academic pressure and self-focused attention increase markedly during the high school stage (ages 15–17), repetitive negative thinking is more likely to be activated and maintained during this period;

Cognitive and behavioural factors associated with improvements in depression outcomes among individuals attending CBT for insomnia.

Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the gold-standard insomnia treatment, which also produces medium-to-large antidepressant effects at a group level. However, not everyone benefits equally and CBT-I related factors associated with varying depression outcomes are not well understood, limiting the capacity for treatment optimisation and uptake of CBT-I in routine care. This study examined whether trajectories of change in daytime and bedtime general repetitive negative thinking (RNT), daytime and bedtime sleep-related RNT, and low activity levels (improved behavioural activati

Catastrophising and repetitive negative thinking tendencies in patients with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures or epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Previous research suggests that catastrophisation and perseverative, or repetitive negative thinking (RNT) could play an important role in the aetiology of Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizures (PNES). This study was designed to explore whether these cognitive tendencies are more prevalent in patients with PNES than those with epilepsy and to examine the relationship between these cognitions, depression, anxiety, seizure frequency and diagnosis. METHODS: 26 patients with PNES (PWPNES) and 29 with epilepsy (PWE) self-reported RNT (Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire), catastrophisation t

Current major depression is associated with greater sensitivity to the motivational effect of both negative mood induction and abstinence on tobacco-seeking behavior.

BACKGROUND: Although depression and smoking commonly co-occur, the mechanisms underpinning this association are poorly understood. One hypothesis is that depression promotes tobacco dependence, persistence and relapse by increasing sensitivity to acute negative mood and abstinence induced tobacco-seeking behavior. METHODS: Twenty nine daily smokers of >10 cigarettes per day, nine with major depression and 20 without, completed two laboratory sessions one week apart, smoking as normal prior to session 1 (sated session), and 6h abstinent prior to session 2 (abstinent session). In both sessions,

Relationships Between Refraining From Catastrophic Thinking, Repetitive Negative Thinking, and Psychological Distress.

Skills to refrain from catastrophic thinking were negatively related to worry and a wide range of psychological distress. Repetitive negative thinking (including worry) is proposed as a common etiological factor for a wide range of psychological distress. Therefore, reduced repetitive negative thinking would mediate the negative relation between refraining from catastrophic thinking and psychological distress (depression, social anxiety, phobia, generalized anxiety, and obsessions and compulsions). As an overlap between five indices of psychological distress was expected, we first computed lat

Implications of genetic attributions for addiction among addiction professionals.

Given increasing emphasis on understanding the role of genes in the etiology of addictive disorders, the present study aimed to investigate the implications of genetic explanations of addiction for attitudes and beliefs about patients among addiction treatment providers. Participants were recruited from addiction-related professional organizations. The sample included professionals with medical backgrounds (n = 153) and with nonmedical backgrounds (n = 232). They viewed a description of a fictitious patient with either alcohol use disorder or gambling disorder, which was experimentally varied
