Many previous studies of laryngeal biomechanics using in vivo models have employed a constant air How source. Several authors have recently suggested that the lung-thorax system functions as a constant pressure source during phonation. This study describes an in vivo canine system designed to maintain a constant peak subglottic pressure (Psub) using a pressure-controlling mechanism. Increasing levels of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) stimulation resulted in a significant rise in resistance followed by a plateau. For a given Psub, flow decreased significantly and precipitously with increasing

The present investigation was designed to examine the effect of variation in recurrent laryngeal nerve stimulation (RLNS) on vocal fold vibration. Photoglottography (PGG), electroglottography (EGG), and subglottic pressure (Psub) were measured in seven mongrel dogs using an in vivo canine model of phonation. The PGG, EGG, and Psub signals were examined at three fundamental frequencies (F0) (100 Hz, 130 Hz, and 160 Hz) for RLNS, using a constant rate of air flow. Increasing RLNS, which caused activation of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles, produced a modest increase in F0, a marked increase in P

Our aim was to locate brain regions projecting to all cranial motor nuclei involved in phonation simultaneously, that is, the ambiguus, trigeminal motor, facial, and hypoglossal nuclei. For this purpose, four squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) were injected with horseradish peroxidase, each of the four nuclei in a different animal. Those regions retrogradely labeled in all four cases then were injected in another 29 animals with [3H]leucine for anterograde tracing. We found that the only region connected directly with all phonatory motor nuclei is a restricted portion of the pontine and medul

The vocal membrane, an extended part of the vocal fold, is present in a broad range of species including non-human primates. Its contribution to animal vocalizations has long been of interest. A theoretical study (Mergell P, Fitch T, Herzel H. 1999 Modeling the role of nonhuman vocal membranes in phonation. J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 105, 2020-2028. (https://doi.org/10.1121/1.424994)) predicted that vocal membranes enhance vocal efficiency by lowering the phonation threshold pressure. To test this, excised larynx experiments were conducted on rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). Comparisons before and a

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss is known to play a fundamental role in voice production due to a lack of auditory feedback. In this study, we evaluated both fundamental frequency (F0) and loudness of voice on adult deaf patients subjected to cochlear implantation, and we analyzed these results according to the prelingual or postlingual onset of the deafness.
METHODS: The study population, balanced in terms of sex, consisted of 32 adults who had undergone cochlear implantation due to severe or profound bilateral hearing loss (16 with prelingual deafness and 16 with postlingual deafness) and their o

Purpose This study investigated whether metabolic respiratory requirements (treadmill workload) affected glottal valving in phonation, based on aerodynamic measures, when a sound pressure level (vocal SPL) is dictated as a target goal. Consistent with a theory of action, we hypothesized that adjustments in glottal valving as measured by laryngeal airway resistance would be dependent upon vocal SPL level, even as workload increased, and loud vocal SPL would interfere more with respiratory homeostasis than spontaneous vocal SPL. Method Thirty-two women enrolled who were ages 18-35 years. A repea

Background and aims: Maximum phonation time (MPT), which is related to respiratory function, is widely used to evaluate maximum vocal capabilities, because its use is non-invasive, quick, and inexpensive. We aimed to examine differences in MPT by age, following recovery phase II cardiac rehabilitation (CR). Methods: This longitudinal observational study assessed 50 consecutive cardiac patients who were divided into the middle-aged group (<65 years, n = 29) and older-aged group (≥65 years, n = 21). MPTs were measured at 1 and 3 months after cardiac surgery, and were compared. Results: The durat

Forces applied to vocal fold tissue as the vocal folds collide may cause tissue injury that manifests as benign organic lesions. A novel method for measuring this quantity in humans in vivo uses a low-profile force sensor that extends along the length and depth of the glottis. Sensor design facilitates its placement and stabilization so that phonation can be initiated and maintained while it is in place, with minimal interference in vocal fold vibration. In 2 individuals with 1 vibrating vocal fold and 1 nonvibrating vocal fold, peak collision force correlates more strongly with voice intensit

The aerodynamic generation of sound during phonation was studied using direct numerical simulations of the airflow and the sound field in a rigid pipe with a modulated orifice. Forced oscillations with an imposed wall motion were considered, neglecting fluid-structure interactions. The compressible, two-dimensional, axisymmetric form of the Navier-Stokes equations were numerically integrated using highly accurate finite difference methods. A moving grid was used to model the effects of the moving walls. The geometry and flow conditions were selected to approximate the flow within an idealized

OBJECTIVE: Hyperventilation during phonation is one of the causes of fatigue in-patients with vocal disorders.
METHODS: The transcutaneous (tc) PCO(2) during phonation in 8 normal subjects and 12 patients with unilateral vocal cord paralysis was measured. Cases were further divided into two groups by the degree of the tcPCO(2) decrease during phonation. Patients with a tcPCO(2) decrease less than 3.4 mmHg during phonation were classified as group 1 (G1). Patients with a tcPCO(2) decrease larger than or equal to 3.4 mmHg during phonation were classified into group 2 (G2).
RESULTS: The average

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the acute effects of inspiratory muscle warm-up (IWU) on vocal performance in singers. Proper vocal and respiratory warm-up can enhance vocal range, quality, and endurance. The aim was to determine whether IWU improves maximum phonation time and pitch range, contributing to better voice production efficiency (vocal efficiency) and reduced fatigue.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Singers were selected from the Samsun State Opera and the Ballet Directorate (n = 16). This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the acute effects. The singers in the control group (SC

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of postoperative complications, including dysphagia, increases as the population undergoing cardiovascular surgery ages. This study aimed to explore the potential of maximum phonation time (MPT) as a simple tool for predicting postextubation dysphagia (PED) and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs).
METHODS: This retrospective study included 442 patients who underwent elective cardiac surgery at a university hospital. MPT was measured before surgery, and patients were stratified into 2 groups based on normal and abnormal MPTs. Postoperative complic

This article deals with large-eddy simulations of three-dimensional incompressible laryngeal flow followed by acoustic simulations of human phonation of five cardinal English vowels, /ɑ, æ, i, o, u/. The flow and aeroacoustic simulations were performed in OpenFOAM and in-house code openCFS, respectively. Given the large variety of scales in the flow and acoustics, the simulation is separated into two steps: (1) computing the flow in the larynx using the finite volume method on a fine moving grid with 2.2 million elements, followed by (2) computing the sound sources separately and wave propagat

During phonation, the vocal folds exhibit a self-sustained oscillatory motion, which is influenced by the physical properties of the speaker's vocal folds and driven by the balance of bio-mechanical and aerodynamic forces across the glottis. Subtle changes in the speaker's physical state can affect voice production and alter these oscillatory patterns. Measuring these can be valuable in developing computational tools that analyze voice to infer the speaker's state. Traditionally, vocal fold oscillations (VFOs) are measured directly using physical devices in clinical settings. In this paper, we

The effects of the vocal processes resection on phonation in an animal without vocal fold paralysis have not been clarified. The present study used an in vivo animal model with vocal processes resection and excised larynges phonation model to investigate the effects of the vocal processes resection on phonation. Six months after resection of bilateral vocal fold processes, glottal airflow, subglottal air pressure, acoustic signals, and ultra-high-speed video images were recorded in the excised larynges phonation model of canine. Glottal aerodynamic parameters were estimated by calculation of s
