An 31-year-old man had a unique form of occipital lobe epilepsy. Since age 13 years, he has had episodes of simple partial status epilepticus (SE) occurring twice a month. These typically consisted of elementary visual hallucinations of flashing lights obscuring his left visual field for a period of 2 days, associated with a severe frontal headache initially diagnosed as migraine. These episodes of simple partial SE then evolved to a complex partial seizure (CPS) or secondarily generalized seizure. There were unique EEG features, including: (a) the perception of a flash of light in the left vi

Neurophysiological studies were performed on four Papio papio baboons presenting with nonepileptic myoclonus (a startle response resembling stimulus-sensitive jerk). Investigations of the EEG, back-averaged EEG, and somatosensory evoked potentials revealed the absence of cortical correlates preceding the jerks, and exclusion of cerebral cortex involvement. No long-latency reflexes could be recorded in these animals. The jerks were symmetric when evoked by unilateral stimulation in normal baboons as well as in a split-brain animal. Polymyographic records showed that the first muscle involved du

A research project was conducted in order to investigate the usefulness of intensive audio-visual training administered to children with dyslexia involving daily voicing exercises. In this study, the children received such voicing training (experimental group) for 30 min a day, 4 days a week, over 5 weeks. They were assessed on a reading task before and after the training. A significant benefit to the experimental group was found after training. These preliminary results underline the role of the phonological components of dyslexia.

Three studies examine the role that provocative visual stimuli have in eliciting anxiety reactions in people with agoraphobia. Such stimuli elicit more anxiety in agoraphobic patients than control subjects. The effect of visual stimulation appears to be specific: (1) non-visual stimulation is without comparable effect; (2) both control and agoraphobic groups show similar effects of visual stimulation on another reaction such as headache. The anxiety effects of visual stimuli are correlated with the extent to which subjects experience depersonalization and somatic symptoms of agoraphobia, but n

Ten thousand broiler chicks on commercial farms in Israel were imprinted to blue and red plastic boxes (20 x 20 x 40 cm) containing loud speakers (8 omega, 12 W) equipped with a tape recorder, in which a classical music cassette had been placed. Upon reaching 3 wk of age, an attempt was made to move these chicks from the training area (A) to a new area (B) using the imprinting objects. This experiment was repeated four times: May, August and November of 1985, and in January 1986. During the warm months of May and August 30 to 60% of the experimental chicks followed the imprinting objects towar

Electroencephalogram (EEG) has an important role in the management of seizure disorder in children. It helps in diagnosis and classification of epilepsy, choosing of antiepileptic medication and prediction of prognosis. When history of epilepsy is unclear, EEG can help to distinguish epileptiform discharges from its counterpart. But EEG has limitations. In epilepsy, EEG has variable range of sensitivity and specificity. Hereby, during interpretation of EEG, clinical situation should not be ignored. Interictal EEG has important diagnostic and prognostic value in epilepsy. But caution is needed

Pineal efferent projections have been traced in the brain of the goldfish (Carassius auratus) by administration of a concentrated solution of horseradish peroxidase onto the pineal organ. After different survival times, fish were sacrificed and the administered peroxidase was revealed by immunocytochemistry on paraffin sections using an anti-horseradish peroxidase antiserum. Immunoreactive fibres were seen in the anterior hypothalamus, habenula, dorsal thalamus, ventral thalamus, optic tectum, torus longitudinalis, area pretectalis, torus semicircularis and dorsal tegmentum. No immunoreactive

In visual search, salient yet task-irrelevant distractors in the stimulus array interfere with target selection. This is due to the unwanted shift of attention towards the salient stimulus-the so-called attentional capture effect, which delays deployment of attention onto the target. Although powerful and automatic, attentional capture by a salient distractor is nonetheless antagonized by distractor-filtering mechanisms and is further modulated by cross-trial contingencies: The distractor cost is typically more robust when no distraction has been experienced in the immediate past, compared to

Through the influence of Goldman-Rakic, much research has been focused on the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in spatial working memory, decision making, and saccade generation, whereas functions of other parts of the frontal lobe including the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) are less clear. Previous studies in non-human primates have shown that some VLPFC cells are selectively responsive to faces. Recent findings indicate that adjacent to the region where face- and object-selective cells have been recorded are neurons which respond to complex sounds including human and monk

PURPOSE: To establish the incidence and symptoms of partial seizures in a cohort of patients investigated on account of known sensitivity to intermittent photic stimulation and/or precipitation of seizures by environmental visual stimuli such as television (TV) screens or computer monitors.
METHODS: We report 43 consecutive patients with epilepsy, who had exhibited a significant EEG photoparoxysmal response or who had seizures precipitated by environmental visual stimuli and underwent detailed assessment of their photosensitivity in the EEG laboratory, during which all were questioned concern

The aim of this study was to discriminate migraine patients (MWoA) from tension-type headache (TTH) patients and normals in order to confirm that the photic driving response in the medium frequency range is a marker of migraine and to test the hypothesis that MWoA and TTH are separate disorders based on electrophysiological pattern. We recruited 120 MWoA patients, 64 TTH patients, and 51 healthy controls without any history of headache or of migraine inheritance, according to International Headache Society (IHS) criteria. The classification method was discriminant analysis using both linear di

This research paper reports a case study of two male photosensitive epileptic patients, aged 14 and 16 years old respectively, whose epileptic seizures were often triggered by the flickers from television and video games respectively. The 14-year old patient had no family history of epilepsy, while the 16 year old had a family history of epilepsy. A comprehensive electroencephalogram (EEG), including hyperventilation, intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) and pattern stimulation were carried out on them and EEG abnormalities including photoparoxysmal responses (PPR) and generalized myoclonic r

The incidence of 'telephillic syndrome' (impulsive attraction to television), in three photosensitive epileptic patients who were referred to our neurophysiology clinic because they were having seizures is reported. Two were females, aged fourteen and eight respectively, one was a male aged twenty-five years. All the patients had a family history of epilepsy. The age range of onset of photosensitivity was 3.5-12 years and the most common seizure inducing factor was flickering light from the television (TV) viewing. They were all 'telephillic'. The predominant seizure type found in these patien

PURPOSE: It is well known that repetitive flash stimulation may trigger seizures in susceptible individuals. Nevertheless, reports of such incidents occurring during recording of a flash electroretinogram (ERG) are extremely rare. Here, we describe the case of a photic-induced seizure triggered during an ERG recording in the absence of a history of epilepsy or other paroxysmal events.
METHODS: A 14-year-old male patient presented with reduced visual acuity and impaired mesopic vision. Ophthalmological exams confirmed the patient's complaints but were inconclusive as to the underlying pathophy

Migraine patients often report (inter)ictal hypersensitivity to light, but the underlying mechanisms remain an enigma. Both hypo- and hyperresponsivity of the visual network have been reported, which may reflect either intra-individual dynamics of the network or large inter-individual variation in the measurement of human visual evoked potential data. Therefore, we studied visual system responsivity in freely behaving mice using combined epidural electroencephalography and intracortical multi-unit activity to reduce variation in recordings and gain insight into visual cortex dynamics. For bett

Although epileptic photosensitivity is well known, its genetics and syndromic associations are incompletely understood. Seizures triggered by photic stimulation are usually a manifestation of the idiopathic generalized epilepsies, especially juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), or of the occipital epilepsies. Idiopathic photosensitive occipital epilepsy (IPOE) is a focal epilepsy with colourful elementary visual auras, often with conscious tonic head and eye version; myoclonus is not a feature. All seizures are induced by photic stimuli. We describe four families with phenotypic overlap between

OBJECTIVES: The diagnosis of epilepsy can cause many problems, especially when the routine electrophysiological tests are inconclusive. The aim of the present study was to assess the visual evoked potential (VEP) in patients with epilepsy using various kinds of stimulation and activation tests. The VEP parameters were also presented with reference to the type of seizure and abnormalities in electroencephalogram (EEG), including the response to the activation tests.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study comprised 81 patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy of unknown etiology before initiation of th

This revision to the EEG Guidelines is an update incorporating the current electroencephalography technology and practice. It was previously published as Guideline 2. Similar to the prior guideline, it delineates the aspects of Guideline 1 that should be modified for neonates and young children. Recording conditions for photic stimulation and hyperventilation are revised to enhance the provocation of epileptiform discharges. Revisions recognize the difficulties involved in performing an EEG under sedation in young children. Recommended neonatal EEG montages are displayed for the reduced set of e

OBJECTIVE: A patient with a right posterior cerebral artery territory infarction and a left superior quadrantanopia exhibited improvement on various visual tasks including Goldmann perimetry during extreme right gaze. The phenomenon was investigated by functional imaging of cerebral blood flow.
METHODS: [(99m)Tc]HMPAO SPECT was carried out while the patient gazed to the right and to the left at an 8 Hz flash stimulus.
RESULTS: When compared with left gaze, photic stimulation during right gaze was associated with an up to 39.8% increase in regional cerebral blood flow in the damaged right hem

Cervical myelography with iohexol via C1-C2 puncture was performed in 30 patients in two medical centers using a concentration of 240 mg l/ml. The study demonstrated iohexol to be a safe contrast medium without significant changes in neurologic and physical examination, vital signs, electrocardiogram, or hematologic or blood chemistry parameters. Fifteen patients had electroencephalograms (EEGs); two were abnormal. In one patient the baseline EEG demonstrated nonspecific slow waves in the temporal regions bilaterally that remained unchanged after myelography. In the second patient, transient c
