The most foolproof way to promote survival in epidemics of potentially lethal influenza is to target, not highly mutable viral proteins, but rather intracellular signaling pathways which promote viral propagation or lung inflammation. NF-kappaB, activated in influenza-infected lung epithelial cells and macrophages, is one likely target in this regard, as it plays a role both in viral replication and in the excessive lung inflammation often evoked by influenza infection. Indeed, salicylates, which suppress NF-kappaB activation, have been shown to reduce the lethality of H5N1 avian-type influenz

Alkaline soda lakes are high-pH environments that host specialized microbial communities with potential for biotechnology and natural product discovery. We characterized three Sodalinema-dominated cyanobacterial consortia enriched from Canadian soda lakes over 510 days. Using hybrid metagenomic sequencing and metatranscriptomics across pH, alkalinity, and temperature gradients, we reconstructed high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes and assessed functional activity. All consortia converged toward cyanobacteria dominance and exhibited temperature optima between 21°C and 30°C. Phylogenetic an

Spirulina platensis, a water blue-green alga, has been associated with potent biological effects, which might have important relevance in atheroprotection. We investigated whether S. platensis or phycocyanobilin (PCB), its tetrapyrrolic chromophore, can activate atheroprotective heme oxygenase-1 (Hmox1), a key enzyme in the heme catabolic pathway responsible for generation of a potent antioxidant bilirubin, in endothelial cells and in a mouse model of atherosclerosis. In vitro experiments were performed on EA.hy926 endothelial cells exposed to extracts of S. platensis or PCB. In vivo studies w

Synthetic non-metallic nanoparticles (NMNPs) such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon nanodots (CNDs), and cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have been explored to treat harmful algal blooms. However, their strain-specific algicidal activities have been rarely investigated. Here we determined their acute toxicity to nine freshwater cyanobacterial strains belonging to seven genera, including Microcystis aeruginosa UTEX 2386, M. aeruginosa UTEX 2385, M. aeruginosa LE3, Anabaena cylindrica PCC 7122, Aphanizomenon sp. NZ, Planktothrix agardhii SB 1810, Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, Lyngbya sp. CCAP 144

Mercury (Hg) is a pollutant of high concern for aquatic systems due to the biomagnification of its methylated form along the food chain. However, in contrast to other metals, gaining knowledge of its bioavailable forms for aquatic microorganisms remains challenging, making Hg risk assessment difficult. Ubiquitous and sessile freshwater biofilms are well known to accumulate and to transform Hg present in their ambient environment. The present study thus aims to evaluate whether non-extractable (proxy of intracellular) Hg accumulated by biofilms could be a good indicator of Hg bioavailability fo

The mechanisms underlying cancer cachexia - the proximate cause of at least 20% of cancer-related deaths - have until recently remained rather obscure. New research, however, clarifies that cancers evoking cachexia release microvesicles rich in heat shock proteins 70 and 90, and that these extracellular heat shock proteins induce cachexia by serving as agonists for toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in skeletal muscle, macrophages, and adipocytes. Hence, safe nutraceutical measures which can down-regulate TLR4 signaling can be expected to aid prevention and control of cancer cachexia. There is reason

Limited but provocative ecologic epidemiology suggests that dietary salt may play a central role in the genesis of not only of stroke, but also dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. Impairment of nitric oxide bioactivity in the cerebral microvasculature is a likely mediator of this effect. Salted diets evoke increased adrenal secretion of the natriuretic steroid marinobufagenin (MBG), which promotes natriuresis via inhibition of renal tubular Na+/K+-ATPase; this effect is notably robust in salt-sensitive rodent strains in which other compensatory natriuretic mechanisms are subnormally effic

Autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBDs) are a group of conditions marked by the formation of blisters and erosions on the skin and mucous membranes. It occurs in all age groups, slightly more often affecting women. Several factors may be linked to the development of AIBDs, with nutrition being one of them. The literature mentions various food products and food ingredients acting as disease modifiers. Given the complex relationship between bullous diseases and nutrition, the current literature on AIBDs has been reviewed, with an emphasis on the influence of dietary modifications, various diets, and

The loss of density and elasticity, the appearance of wrinkles and hyperpigmentation are among the first noticeable signs of skin aging. Beyond UV radiation and oxidative stress, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) assume a preponderant role in the process, since their deregulation results in the degradation of most extracellular matrix components. In this survey, four cyanobacteria strains were explored for their capacity to produce secondary metabolites with biotechnological potential for use in anti-aging formulations. BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neuroinflammatory disorder marked by demyelination and axonal damage, where oxidative stress and cytokine-mediated inflammation are key pathological factors. Spirulina, a microalga rich in phycocyanin, phenolic compounds, and omega-3 fatty acids, exhibits potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, potentially targeting these pathways. This study investigated spirulina's impact on inflammatory biomarkers and quality of life in relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) patients.
METHODS: A triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial randomized 80 RRMS p

Today, cyanobacteria, as the first photosynthetic microorganisms, play an undeniable role in ecosystems and global markets. In this research, the biomass and photosynthetic pigment production under environmental and nutritional factors in Calothrix and Microchaete were investigated. Photoperiod did not influence biomass production, while both strains produced maximum biomass at a light intensity of 100 µmol photons m-2 s-1. Although 100 mM NaCl and 25 mM NaNO3 increased the biomass in both cyanobacteria, urea at 1 mM inhibited the growth of Calothrix, in contrast to Microchaete. On the other h

BACKGROUND: Dynamic surveillance of vasculature is essential for evaluating the healing of oral ulcer. Existing techniques used in vascular imaging face limitations, such as inadequate spatial resolution, restricted diagnostic depth, and the necessity of exogenous contrast agents. Therefore, this study aimed to use robust photoacoustic imaging (PAI) for the dynamic monitoring of vascular response during healing and the associated treatment process of oral ulcer.
METHODS: Kunming mice (male, 8 weeks old, 31-41 g) were treated with 50% acetic acid for 90 s on the tongue mucosa for induction of

Cyanobacteria have long attracted scientific interest through their potential application in the development of new therapeutic approaches, particularly those related to the treatment of cancer. In this study, the antiproliferative effects of Nostoc commune extract (NOS) and the cyanobacterial compound scytonemin (SCY) were evaluated against a variety of in vitro cancer models, including cervix, colon, breast, lung, and leukemia cell lines, using resazurin assays. Both of the studied compounds were found to have inhibited metabolic activity in a dose-dependent manner, with IC50 values ranging

Cyclophosphamide (CP) is known to reduce fertility. The protective effects of Spirulina plantesis (SP) against CP-induced testicular toxicity were investigated. Male Wistar rats were categorized into eight groups (n = 7). Four groups of rats were administered CP at a dose of 5 mg in 5 mL distilled water kg-1 per day orally. Two of these groups were received SP (500 and 1000 mg kg-1 per day) orally after CP administration. One of these groups was also received vitamin E (100 mg kg-1 per day) intraperitoneally. A vehicle treated control group, two SP control groups (500 and 1000 mg kg-1 per day)

Cyanobacteria-derived peptides represent a promising class of anticancer agents due to their structural diversity and potent bioactivity. They exert cytotoxic effects through mechanisms including microtubule disruption, histone deacetylase inhibition, and apoptosis induction. Several peptides-most notably the dolastatin-derived auristatins-have achieved clinical success as cytotoxic payloads in antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). However, challenges such as limited tumor selectivity, systemic toxicity, and production scalability remain barriers to broader application. Recent advances in targeted
