Psychological factors influencing recovery from balance disorders.

This article reviews evidence for three mechanisms whereby psychological factors may aggravate dizziness and retard recovery from balance disorders. Firstly, a common behavioral response to dizziness is to avoid activities and environments that provoke symptoms, yet such avoidance deprives the individual of the exposure necessary to promote psychological and neurophysiological adaptation. Secondly, anxiety arousal and hyperventilation may add to, amplify, and disinhibit the somatic symptoms induced by balance disorder. Thirdly, attention and cognitive load may influence the central processing

Recommendations from the French Societies of Rheumatology and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation on the non-pharmacological management of knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Although non-pharmacological therapies for knee osteoarthritis (OA) are essential pillars of care, they are often poorly considered and inconsistently applied. OBJECTIVES: Under the umbrella of the French Society of Rheumatology (SFR) and the French Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (SOFMER), we aimed to establish consensual recommendations for the non-pharmacological management of people with knee OA. METHODS: A group of fellows performed a systematic literature review on the efficacy and safety of non-pharmacological modalities (up to October 2021). The fellows th

Oral anatomy laboratory examinations in a physical therapy program.

The process of creating and administering traditional tagged anatomy laboratory examinations is time consuming for instructors and limits laboratory access for students. Depending on class size and the number of class, sections, creating, administering, and breaking down a tagged laboratory examination may involve one to two eight-hour days. During the time that a tagged examination is being created, student productivity may be reduced as the anatomy laboratory is inaccessible to students. Further, the type of questions that can be asked in a tagged laboratory examination may limit student ass

[Modern methods of rehabilitation of patients with different degrees of multiple sclerosis. (Literature review)].

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes damage to the myelin sheath of the nerve fibers, which leads to various neurological symptoms. Over the past 30 years, a significant advance in studying the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis has been achieved and progress in symptomatic treatment of the disease, including control of secondary manifestations, has been noted. Rehabilitation plays an important role in the management of this disease. Physical rehabilitation, which includes physiotherapy and therapeutic exercise, is the main part of rehabilitation. Psychological rehabi

Psychological, physical and complementary therapies for the management of neuropathic pain.

This chapter aims to explain and evaluate the evidence for psychological, physical and complementary therapies as part of a holistic plan for managing neuropathic pain. Psychological therapies refer to interventions targeting mental health, while physical therapies refer to interventions designed to target movement and functional ability, and complementary therapies are those that attempt to target key mechanisms of change to alter brain and body functioning, or thought processes related to the experience of pain. Each therapeutic modality is discussed to narratively report on the evidence and

Whole-body vibration exercise in the management of cardiovascular diseases: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are an important public health problem, representing about 45% of deaths in the world. Its management is linked to medications, changes in lifestyle, and physical exercise, with the whole-body vibration exercises (WBV) being a promising therapeutic resource. This study aims to investigate the effects of WBV in isolation or associated with other types of exercises in the management of CVDs. METHODS: A systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines and registered on the PROSPERO platform was carried out. The search took place in the databases PubMed

Specialized Versus Generic Allied Health Therapy and the Risk of Parkinson's Disease Complications.

BACKGROUND: Specialized versus generic physiotherapy (PT) reduces Parkinson's disease (PD)-related complications. It is unclear (1) whether other specialized allied heath disciplines, including occupational therapy (OT) and speech and language therapy (S&LT), also reduce complications; (2) whether there is a synergistic effect among multiple specialized disciplines; and (3) whether each allied health discipline prevents specific complications. OBJECTIVES: To longitudinally assessed whether the level of expertise (specialized vs. generic training) of PT, OT, and S&LT was associated with the in

Airway clearance: physiology, pharmacology, techniques, and practice.

Clinicians and their patients are troubled by respiratory secretions, and standard practice calls for efforts to clear secretions from the lungs. On one hand, mucus production and cough are important for airway defense and protection of the lower respiratory tract against inhaled irritations. On the other hand, excessive mucus obstructs airways and excessive cough has been associated with a number of complications. The objective of this conference was to review the scientific basis and clinical evidence for the use of airway clearance therapy to guide the most appropriate approach to airway cl

Functional rehabilitation for degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis.

Nonoperative treatment for lumbar spinal stenosis must address anatomic and biomechanical factors. The entire functional kinetic chain and patient specific goals must be considered. In addition to passive modalities, manual therapy, and patient education, an active program consisting of flexion-based lumbar stabilization exercises, hip mobilization, proprioceptive training, and general conditioning should be initiated. More studies are needed to establish the benefit of a comprehensive, multifaceted treatment approach and to prove its clear benefit over the natural history of lumbar spinal ste

Musculoskeletal Treatment Mechanisms: A Puzzle That May Never Be Fully Solved.

SYNOPSIS: Musculoskeletal treatments often appear simple, yet the mechanisms underlying their effects remain difficult to explain. Patients and clinicians routinely ask why exercises, manual techniques, or psychologically informed interventions help, but current evidence rarely supports the intuitive explanations offered in practice. Although mechanistic research promises more precise and individualized care, most studies isolate single pathways under controlled conditions that fail to reflect the complexity of human recovery. In real-world musculoskeletal care, physiological, psychological, a
