Evaluation of growth and feeding tolerance in infants with single-ventricle physiology receiving retrospective standard of care feeding regimens compared with protocolised formula or exclusive human milk feeding regimens.

OBJECTIVE: Determine whether weight gain velocity (g/day) 30 days after initiating feeds following cardiac surgery and other clinical outcomes improve in infants with single-ventricle physiology fed an exclusive human milk (EHM) diet with early fortification compared to non-protocolised "standard of care." METHODS: This retrospective cohort study compares term infants with single-ventricle physiology who underwent neonatal surgical palliation. The retrospective control group (RCG) was fed according to non-protocolised standard of care at a single centre and was compared with infants in a prev

Early Physiological Markers of Wound Healing as Potential Prognostic Markers of Long-Term Patient Satisfaction After Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty: A Comparative Analysis of Aloe Vera Versus Untreated Controls.

Background While topical Aloe Vera has been shown to improve wound healing following upper eyelid blepharoplasty, it remains unknown which early physiological markers of healing best predict long-term patient satisfaction. Identifying such predictors could help surgeons counsel patients and optimize postoperative protocols. Objective The objective of this study is to determine which early wound-healing parameters (vascularity, pigmentation, pliability, and height) measured at one week postoperatively are most strongly associated with patient satisfaction at three months after upper eyelid blep

Differential cannabinoid-like effects, receptor affinity and physiologically based pharmacokinetics of the synthetic cannabinoids 4F-MDMB-BINACA, 4F-MDMB-BICA and 5F-MDMB-PICA in mice: A comparative study.

Synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) 4F-MDMB-BINACA, 4F-MDMB-BICA, and 5F-MDMB-PICA share a "tail" group but differ in indazole/indole cores and N-fluoroalkyl chain lengths (C4 vs. C5). However, the impact of these structural variations on cannabimimetic potency and the influence of the inhalational abuse route remain unclear. This study integrated behavioural profiling, receptor binding analysis, and pharmacokinetic modelling to address these gaps. ICR mice were administered the three SCRAs via inhalation or intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection, and cannabinoid "tetrad effects" (analge

The Effects of Pre-Season and Relationships with Physical, Physiological, Body Composition, and Load Markers: A Case Study Comparing Starters versus Non-Starters from an Elite Female Professional Soccer Team.

Background and Objectives: Research on female soccer players that analyzes playing status is scarce and has previously only examined load monitoring, while other markers, such as physical (i.e., strength, power, and agility), physiological (i.e., maximal oxygen uptake), and body composition (i.e., body fat mass, fat-free mass, body water, and phase angle) markers, warrant further investigation. Thus, the study aims were to (a) compare physical, physiological, body composition, and load markers between starters and non-starters; (b) compare measurements pre- and post-training intervention (five

Comparative parasitology and host pathophysiology: integrated assessment of ectoparasite dynamics, seasonal prevalence, and physiological impacts in co-cultured European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata).

Ectoparasitic infestations pose significant threats to Mediterranean aquaculture, particularly for economically important species, European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata). Intensified aquaculture practices exacerbate these issues, impairing fish immunity, reducing growth rates, and incurring substantial economic losses. This study examined the prevalence, seasonal dynamics, organ tropism, and pathophysiological impacts of key ectoparasites in 1200 fingerlings (600 per species) collected seasonally (winter: December-February; summer: June-August) from pri

Respirometry: anhydrous drierite equilibrates with carbon dioxide and increases washout times.

Respirometry is a standard technique in comparative physiology laboratories, with measurements of rates of O(2) consumption and CO(2) production available for hundreds of species. A common recommendation when carrying out respirometry is that water vapor be removed from the air stream before entering the analyzer. Often, this is accomplished with the use of chemical desiccants, such as Drierite. However, here we show that Drierite has an affinity for CO(2) when new and completely anhydrous, and therefore it has an adverse effect on the washout characteristics of this gas. Exposing the Drierite

In Vitro Digestion-In Situ Absorption Setup Employing a Physiologically Relevant Value of the Membrane Surface Area/Volume Ratio for Evaluating Performance of Lipid-Based Formulations: A Comparative Study with an In Vitro Digestion-Permeation Model.

The aim of this study is to establish and test an in vitro digestion-in situ absorption model that can mimic in vivo drug flux by employing a physiologically relevant value of the membrane surface area (S)/volume (V) ratio for accurate prediction of oral drug absorption from lipid-based formulations (LBFs). Three different types of LBFs (Type IIIA-MC, Type IIIA-LC, and Type IV) loaded with cinnarizine (CNZ), a lipophilic weak base with borderline permeability, and a control suspension were prepared. Subsequently, a simultaneous in vitro digestion-permeation experiment was conducted using a sid

A randomized control trial to determine the effectiveness and physiological effects of spinal manipulation and spinal mobilization compared to each other and a sham condition in patients with chronic low back pain: Study protocol for The RELIEF Study.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common reasons for seeking medical care. Manipulative therapies are a common treatment for LBP. Few studies have compared the effectiveness of different types of manipulative therapies. Moreover, the physiologic mechanisms underlying these treatments are not fully understood. Herein, we present the study protocol for The Researching the Effectiveness of Lumbar Interventions for Enhancing Function Study (The RELIEF Study). METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: The RELIEF Study is a Phase II RCT with a nested mechanistic design. It is a single-blinded, sha

Proteomics of the human placenta: promises and realities.

Proteomics is an area of study that sets as its ultimate goal the global analysis of all of the proteins expressed in a biological system of interest. However, technical limitations currently hamper proteome-wide analyses of complex systems. In a more practical sense, a desired outcome of proteomics research is the translation of large protein data sets into formats that provide meaningful information regarding clinical conditions (e.g., biomarkers to serve as diagnostic and/or prognostic indicators of disease). Herein, we discuss placental proteomics by describing existing studies, pointing o

Low-load Resistance Exercise with Perceptually Primed Practical Blood Flow Restriction Induces Similar Motor Performance Fatigue, Physiological Changes, and Perceptual Responses Compared to Traditional Blood Flow Restriction in Males and Females.

In the recent past, practical blood flow restriction (pBFR) using non-pneumatic, usually elastic cuffs has been established as a cost-effective alternative to traditional blood flow restriction (BFR) using pneumatic cuffs, especially for training in large groups. This study investigated whether low-load resistance exercise with perceptually primed pBFR using an elastic knee wrap is suitable to induce similar motor performance fatigue as well as physiological and perceptual responses compared to traditional BFR using a pneumatic nylon cuff in males and females. In a randomized, counterbalanced

Hypertension and counter-hypertension mechanisms in giraffes.

The giraffe is unique as its head is 2500-3000 millimeters above its heart, thus the giraffe's heart must pump hard enough to overcome the huge hydrostatic pressure generated by the tall column of blood in its neck in order to provide its head with sufficient nutrients and oxygen. Giraffes therefore have exceptionally high blood pressure (hypertension) by human standards. Interestingly, the "unnaturally" high blood pressure in giraffes does not culminate in severe vascular lesions, nor does it lead to heart and kidney failure, whereas in humans, the same blood pressure is exceedingly dangerous

Pulsed Radiofrequency 2 Hz Preserves the Dorsal Root Ganglion Neuron Physiological Ca2+ Influx, Cytosolic ATP Level, Δψm, and pERK Compared to 4 Hz: An Insight on the Safety of Pulsed Radiofrequency in Pain Management.

BACKGROUND: Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) is beneficial for radicular pain and is commonly administered at pulse frequencies of 2 or 4 Hz. However, its effects on healthy neurons have not yet been widely studied. This study aims to determine the effect of PRF at 2 Hz and 4 Hz on the physiology of healthy dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. METHODS: An in vitro experimental study was conducted using DRG neuron cultures divided into three groups. Control cells received no treatment, one cell group received 20 ms 2 Hz PRF for 360 s, and one cell group received a 4 Hz PRF 10 ms pulse for 360 s with

The evolutionary physiology of animal flight: paleobiological and present perspectives.

Recent geophysical analyses suggest the presence of a late Paleozoic oxygen pulse beginning in the late Devonian and continuing through to the late Carboniferous. During this period, plant terrestrialization and global carbon deposition resulted in a dramatic increase in atmospheric oxygen levels, ultimately yielding concentrations potentially as high as 35% relative to the contemporary value of 21%. Such hyperoxia of the late Paleozoic atmosphere may have physiologically facilitated the initial evolution of insect flight metabolism. Widespread gigantism in late Paleozoic insects and other art

Physiological parameters and training characteristics of endurance runners at Ethiopian Youth Sports Academy (2400 meters above sea level) and Guna Athletics Sport Club (3100 meters above sea level) training camps: a comparative cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Endurance performance is impacted by physiological, anthropometrical, diet, genetic, psychological, and training characteristics. Altitude can affect physiological parameters (like maximum oxygen utilization, arterial oxygen saturation (SaO<inf>2</inf>), heart rate, and blood pressure) and training characteristics (duration, frequency, and training load). Thus, this study compared physiological parameters and training characteristics between endurance runners at Ethiopian Youth Sports Academy (EYSA) and Guna Athletics Sport Club (GASC) located which are located at elevation of 2400
