Evaluation of growth and foraging in laboratory colonies of Coptotermes gestroi (Isoptera, Rhinotermitidae).

Coptotermes gestroi is an exotic species in Brazil that forages on several food items at the same time. Different laboratory tests were performed with 6-year-old colonies of this termite in order to follow the development and displacement of these colonies, considering which castes and instars were transferred or moved from their original chamber. Two bioassays were carried out, one with similar alternative foods (Pinus sp. sawdust), and the other with different alternative foods (large block of Pinus taeda and small block of Pinus elliottii). The colonies of C. gestroi did not show preference

Deep learning-based automatic tree-level crown detection from high-resolution UAV imagery for aboveground carbon stock estimation.

Accurate delineation of individual tree crowns is essential for forest resource management and carbon stock estimation. However, traditional manual interpretation is inefficient under complex forest conditions, and existing deep learning-based object detection models remain vulnerable to crown overlap and background interference. To address these limitations, this study proposes an improved YOLOv8-CAFM model. By integrating the local feature extraction capability of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with the global contextual modeling capability of transformers, the CAFM module enhances the

War fires promote short-term alien plant colonization in eastern Ukraine's pine forests.

Russian full-scale military invasion has driven multiple ecosystem disturbances in the arid zone of eastern Ukraine, including fires of varying severity. Local forests, largely dominated by Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), were planted as uniform monocultures in a region where low-density woodlands had historically prevailed. However, little is known about how military-related fires affect successional trajectories in disturbed pine forests. We conducted fully digital surveys of vascular plant composition using under-canopy imagery collected by an unmanned aerial vehicle. Transects were estab

Comparative analysis of volatile profiles in two grafted pine nuts by headspace-SPME/GC-MS and electronic nose as responses to different roasting conditions.

As an attempt to fulfill the massive demand for pine nuts, two grafted trees were cultivated: grafted Pinus koraiensis on the same scions (PK) and grafted Pinus koraiensis on Pinus sylvestris rootstocks (PKS) trees. Both PK and PKS are acknowledged as important economic trees in the northeastern area of China. This study aimed to compare the volatile compounds and aroma profiles in PK and PKS by Headspace Solid Phase Microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Electronic nose (E-nose) as responses to different roasting conditions. The results showed

Nutritional and mineral analysis of the ultimate wild food plants of Lotkuh, Chitral, the Eastern Hindukush Pakistan.

Wild food plants (WFPs) are designated as functional foods owing to their nutritional potential and as a source of bioactive compounds vital for human health. In times of geopolitical upheaval and nutritional imbalance in mountainous areas of the world, the contribution of WFPs is extraordinary. Lotkuh is a remote mountainous region in the Eastern Hindukush that supports distinctive global plant biodiversity. The documentation and nutritional analysis of the wild edible plants have not yet been subjected to scientific investigation, even though WFPs make up a significant component of the inhab

The current state of environmental pollution with sulfur dioxide (SO2) in Poland based on sulfur concentration in Scots pine needles.

The current air pollution by SO2 due to anthropogenic pressure in Poland was assessed based on sulfur concentrations in pine needles (Pinus sylvestris L.). On 308 monitoring sample plots located in pine stands distributed across Poland, measurements were conducted in mineral soil layers (0-10 cm, 10-40 cm, 40-100 cm) and in the soil organic layer (+5-0 cm). Samples of Scots pine foliage (current-year needles) were then collected, and the sulfur concentration in these needles was determined. Based on these data, a map of the spatial variability of sulfur concentrations in pine needles was drawn

Interactive Effects of Root-Promoting Treatments and Media on Clonal Propagation of Two Western Pine Species.

Root-promoting treatments and media are critical for the clonal propagation of Western pine species, yet long-term data for sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana Dougl.) and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex C. Lawson) remain limited. This multi-year greenhouse study (2024-2025) used a split-plot greenhouse design to evaluate interactions among four rooting media and various root-promoting treatments, including commercial mixed microbial/biostimulant products and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). Coconut coir consistently outperformed other media, achieving rooting rates of up to 80% when combined

Quantitative analysis of the spread pattern of pine wilt disease from the Yangtze River Basin in China.

BACKGROUND: Pine wilt disease (PWD) poses a severe threat to the stability of China's ecosystems and their carbon sequestration capacity. However, the complex interactions between natural and anthropogenic spread pathways remain poorly quantified. By analyzing epidemic subcompartment records from 2014 to 2023, this study established quantitative thresholds to distinguish natural from anthropogenic spread, simulated the historical anthropogenic spread process, and identified the spatiotemporal drivers underlying both spread patterns. RESULTS: The research findings indicate a maximum natural sp

Bio-based wood preservatives: Their efficiency, leaching and ecotoxicity compared to a commercial wood preservative.

Companies in the wood industry are constantly developing their outdoor products. The possibility of using bio-based chemicals as an alternative to traditional wood preservatives-regulated in Europe by The Biocidal Products Regulation No 528/2012-has been considered, but chemical leaching from the wood decreases its effectiveness and may negatively affect the environment. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of bio-based chemicals with potential use in wood preservation to commercially available preservatives, to investigate their fixation to wood and their ecotoxicity and to quantify t

Exogenous sugar addition can exacerbate root carbon limitation in trees.

In most tree species, roots serve as major carbon (C) sinks, where C is depleted first when C assimilation is limited. Recent methodological advancements in sugar infusion allow for a better understanding of physiological processes alleviating root C limitation. We conducted a glasshouse experiment with maple (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) and pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) saplings that underwent defoliation followed by either slow, fast, or no 13C-labeled glucose infusion. We measured photosynthetic parameters, nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) concentrations, and δ13C in cellulose of leaves, twigs, an
