The survival of treated hypertensive patients and their causes of death: a report from the DHSS hypertensive care computing project (DHCCP).

A prospective study has been carried out to determine the causes of death and risk factors for survival in 4994 patients referred with a diagnosis of hypertension to hospital specialist clinics and 457 patients treated by their general practitioners for this condition. At the time of entering the prospective study, 69% of the patients were already being treated for hypertension. Four hundred and eleven patients have died, and their causes of death and death rates have been compared with the rates for the population of England and Wales. Ischaemic heart disease accounted for over one-third of t

Prevalence and patterns of different types of non-cigarette tobacco use in England: a population study.

INTRODUCTION: Non-cigarette tobacco smoking increased in England between 2013 and 2023, but little is known about the prevalence of use of specific types of non-cigarette tobacco, including smokeless products, or whether the increasing trend has continued. This study examined recent trends in exclusive non-cigarette tobacco smoking and estimated the prevalence of different smoked and smokeless product use by sociodemographic characteristics, vaping status, and cigarette smoking status. METHODS: Data came from the Smoking Toolkit Study, a nationally representative monthly cross-sectional surve

[Submaximal exercise capacity and quality of life in exclusive water-pipe smokers].

BACKGROUND: It is well known that oxidative stress is increased significantly by regular water-pipe smoking (WPS). This could lead to muscle dysfunction and thus to impairments of exercise and quality of life (QOL). Considering the impressive number of WP smokers, we intend to investigate the potential effect of WPS on submaximal exercise capacity and QOL. AIMS: (1). To evaluate the submaximal exercise capacity by the 6-minutes walking test (6-MWT). (2). To compare the deficiency, incapacity and QOL data of exclusive WPS with those of two control groups (never smokers and exclusive cigarette

Induction of SCE by opium pyrolysates in CHO cells and human peripheral blood lymphocytes.

The induction of sister chromatid exchange (SCE) by opium pipe scrapings (sukhteh, Su) and the pyrolysis products of opium (Op) and of its major alkaloids, morphine (Mo), have been compared with that of cigarette smoke condensate (CSC). All pyrolysates induced SCE and the frequency was further increased by the inclusion of S9-mix in the protocol. The pyrolysates of Op induced considerably more SCE than CSC when the same concentrations were compared on a weight basis, and the rank in order of potency in CHO cells was MO greater than Op greater than CSC greater than Su. The Op pyrolysates may th

Longitudinal Tobacco Use Transitions Among Adolescents and Young Adults: 2014-2016.

INTRODUCTION: Among youth, the frequency and prevalence of using more than one tobacco (small cigar, cigarette, and hookah) or nicotine-containing product (e-cigarettes-ENDS) are changing. These shifts pose challenges for regulation, intervention, and prevention campaigns because of scant longitudinal data on the stability of use patterns in this changing product landscape. METHODS: A nationally representative longitudinal survey of 15- to 21-year olds (n = 15,275) was used to describe transitions between never use, noncurrent use, and past 30-day use of combustible tobacco, e-cigarettes (END

Salivary oxidative stress biomarkers in periodontitis-free smokers: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Salivary oxidative stress has been extensively studied with attempts to correlate changes in the oxidative stress markers with local and systemic factors, including smoking. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of two forms of smoking, cigarettes and waterpipe smoking (WPS), on selected oxidative stress biomarkers in saliva. METHODS: Three groups of participants were enrolled into the study, controls (never smokers), cigarette smokers and WPS. Participants were clinically free from periodontitis and systemic conditions known to affect the saliva constituents.

Association of psychological and behavioural economic factors with cigarette, water pipe, e-cigarette and heated tobacco use in Israel.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying behavioural factors related to tobacco may provide a better understanding of what drives this behaviour and thus may inform more effective tobacco control programmes and policies. In this study, we explore associations between behavioural factors (time preferences, risk-taking, general self-efficacy and grit) and tobacco and e-cigarette use among adults. METHODS: 4084 adults in the Smoking and Lifestyles in Israel study (2020) were examined. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the association between behavioural factors and the following tobacco an

Home Cultivation of Cannabis in a Context of Prohibition: Results from Two Online Cross-Sectional Surveys of People Using Cannabis Daily in France.

In recent decades, European countries have seen a substantial increase in home cultivation of cannabis. In France, the prevalence of cannabis use continues to increase despite its possession, sale, and cultivation being strictly illegal. The present study aimed to describe the profile and motivations of people in France who cultivate cannabis at home. We separately analyzed data from two convenience samples of people who use cannabis daily in France, based on two online cross-sectional surveys. In the first analysis (N = 3840), we used a multivariable logistic regression model to assess factor

Life style and occupational risk factors for bladder cancer in Germany. A case-control study.

A hospital-based, case-control study of 531 male and 144 female matched pairs was conducted in Germany to analyze the role of nonoccupational and occupational risk factors in the etiology of tumors of the lower urinary tract (bladder cancer). Smoking of cigarettes was associated with an odds ratio (OR) of 3.6 for men and 3.2 for women, compared with not smoking and showed a significant dose- and time-response relationship for both sexes. Heavy pipe smoking significantly increased the risk (OR = 1.9 in men), and smoking of cigars did not alter the risk of bladder cancer. Controlling for smoking
