The lightness/pitch crossmodal correspondence modulates reported dominance in binocular rivalry.

Crossmodal correspondences (CMCs: systematic associations between feature dimensions across sensory modalities) are known to facilitate performance in simple detection and discrimination tasks and can bias reports of ambiguous figures. The present study tested whether a lightness/pitch CMC biases reported dominance in binocular rivalry. Across three experiments, participants viewed dichoptically presented black and white circles accompanied by relatively high- or low-pitched tones. Dominance reports were coded as congruent when they matched the lightness/pitch correspondence (white/high, black

Effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on MMN-indexed auditory discrimination: a pilot study.

Membrane potentials and brain plasticity are basic modes of cerebral information processing. Both can be externally (non-invasively) modulated by weak transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Polarity-dependent tDCS-induced reversible circumscribed increases and decreases in cortical excitability and functional changes have been observed following stimulation of motor and visual cortices but relatively little research has been conducted with respect to the auditory cortex. The aim of this pilot study was to examine the effects of tDCS on auditory sensory discrimination in healthy partic

On the large-scale spectral structure of otoacoustic emissions.

Transient evoked and distortion product otoacoustic emission data, showing a characteristic slowly oscillating spectral shape, are presented. Such peculiar behavior had also been observed in earlier studies, and deserves some theoretical explanation. A simple model of the cochlear reflectivity, based on the analogy between the cochlear transmission line equations and the Schrödinger wave equation for the motion of an elementary particle above a one-dimensional potential well, is presented. Wave mechanics predicts indeed reflection from a negative potential well, which is quasiperiodically depe

The amplitude-modulation following response in young and aged human subjects.

The amplitude-modulation following response (AMFR) is a steady-state auditory response which may be an objective measure of intensity discrimination. Aged subjects with normal hearing have poorer intensity discrimination for low-frequency tones measured behaviorally, which would predict poorer AMFRs for low-frequency carriers. Experiment 1 was designed to assess age-related differences in AMFR characteristics. Response amplitudes were not significantly different among the young and aged groups for either carrier frequency (520 or 4000 Hz) or modulation depth (0--100%). Response phase did not v

Frequency-specific receptive field plasticity in the medial geniculate body induced by pavlovian fear conditioning is expressed in the anesthetized brain.

Fear conditioning modifies the processing of frequency information; receptive fields (RF) in the auditory cortex and the medial geniculate body (MGB) are altered to favor processing the frequency of the conditioned stimulus (CS) over the pretraining best frequency (BF) and other frequencies. This experiment was designed to determine whether brief conditioning in the waking state produces RF plasticity that is expressed under general anesthesia. Guinea pigs bearing electrodes in the MGB received 20 trials of tone-shock pairing in a single training session. RFs were determined with animals under

Perceptual consequences of cochlear hearing loss and their implications for the design of hearing aids.

This paper provides an overview of changes in the perception of sound that result from cochlear damage. It starts with a brief introduction to the physiology of the cochlea, emphasizing the role of the "active mechanism" and describing how cochlear function is altered by cochlear damage. Then the effects of cochlear damage on various aspects of perception are described, including absolute sensitivity, frequency selectivity, loudness perception and intensity discrimination, temporal resolution, temporal integration, pitch perception and frequency discrimination, and sound localization and other

Evaluation of Possible Effects of a Potassium Channel Modulator on Temporal Processing by Cochlear Implant Listeners.

Temporal processing by cochlear implant listeners is degraded and is affected by auditory deprivation. The fast-acting Kv3.1 potassium channel is important for sustained temporally accurate firing and is also susceptible to deprivation, the effects of which can be partially restored in animals by the molecule AUT00063. We report the results of a randomised placebo-controlled double-blind study on psychophysical tests of the effects of AUT00063 on temporal processing by CI listeners. The study measured the upper limit of temporal pitch, gap detection, and discrimination of low rates (centred on

MELAS: a neuropsychological and radiological follow-up study. Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke.

We report on a patient with long standing, full-blown mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS). In contrast to earlier publications, detailed neuropsychological assessment revealed no dementia but a pattern of distinct cognitive deficits with marked impairment of visuo-constructive and executive functions. Focal lesions and progressing atrophy mainly of the basal ganglia and the temporo-parieto-occipital area with preservation of hippocampal and entorhinal structures were present. Furthermore, a 4-year follow-up assessment revealed an increasing deterio

Effects of age and hearing loss on the relationship between discrimination of stochastic frequency modulation and speech perception.

OBJECTIVE: The frequency modulation (FM) of speech can convey linguistic information and also enhance speech-stream coherence and segmentation. The purpose of the present study was to use a clinically oriented approach to examine the effects of age and hearing loss on the ability to discriminate between stochastic patterns of low-rate FM and determine whether difficulties in speech perception experienced by older listeners relate to a deficit in this ability. DESIGN: Data were collected from 18 normal-hearing young adults, and 18 participants who were at least 60 years old, nine of whom had n

Occipital cortical thickness predicts performance on pitch and musical tasks in blind individuals.

The behavioral and neurofunctional consequences of blindness often include performance enhancements and recruitment of occipital regions for nonvisual tasks. How the neuroanatomical changes resulting from this sensory loss relate to these functional changes is, however, less clear. Previous studies using cortical thickness (CT) measures have shown thicker occipital cortex in early-blind (EB) individuals compared with sighted controls. We hypothesized that this finding reflects the crossmodal plasticity often observed in blind individuals and thus could reflect behavioral adaptations. To addres

Different time courses of maturation for learning and generalization following auditory training in children.

OBJECTIVE: We recently demonstrated that learning abilities among school-age children vary following frequency discrimination (FD) training, with some exhibiting mature adult-like learning while others performing poorly (non-adult-like learners). This study tested the hypothesis that children's post-training generalisation is related to their learning maturity. Additionally, it investigated how training duration influences children's generalisation, considering the observed decrease with increased training in adults. DESIGN: Generalisation to the untrained ear and untrained 2000 Hz frequency

Long-term measurement of binaural intensity and pitch matches. II. Fluctuating low-frequency hearing loss.

Thirteen subjects made consecutive long-term recordings of binaural intensity and pitch matches in their homes using portable equipment to assess hearing fluctuations. Two groups of subjects were used; one with monaural fluctuating low-frequency hearing loss (FLFHL) without vertigo, and one with monaural Meniere's disease (i.e. FLFHL with vertigo). The subjects measured binaural pitch matches using a 0.25- or 1-kHz reference tone presented at 60 dB SPL to one ear, and a loudness-matched test tone of adjustable frequency presented to the other ear during one to several weeks. Their results were

NoSo and NoS pi detection as a function of masker bandwidth in normal-hearing and cochlear-impaired listeners.

NoSo and NoS pi detection thresholds for a 500-Hz pure-tone signal were measured as a function of masking noise bandwidth in normal-hearing and cochlear hearing-impaired subjects. NoSo and NoS pi critical bands were derived from the bandlimited noise functions. A notched noise measure of the monaural critical band was also obtained for each ear. One hypothesis tested was that an asymmetrical monaural critical band would result in a relatively steep improvement of the NoS pi detection threshold as a function of decreasing masker bandwidth and would, therefore, be associated with a wider binaura

[Significance of auditory processing deficits for the pathogenesis of reading and spelling disorders].

OBJECTIVE: It has been claimed that children with dyslexia show auditory processing deficits and a training of auditory perception is recommended as a therapy. this study addresses the question whether a causal connection between auditory perception and dyslexia can be proven empirically. METHOD: 27 dyslexic children with average intelligence and normal hearing and 31 controls were examined. The auditory perception ability was judged with non-linguistic (pitch, tone duration, sound discrimination tasks) and verbal (speech in noise, compressed speech) tasks. In addition auditory short-term mem

Mismatch negativity reveals plasticity in cortical dynamics after 1-hour of auditory training exercises.

BACKGROUND: Impaired sensory processing contributes to deficits in cognitive and psychosocial functioning in individuals with schizophrenia (SZ). Mismatch Negativity (MMN), an event-related potential (ERP) index of sensory discrimination associated with cognitive and psychosocial functioning, is a candidate biomarker of auditory discrimination and thus possibly of changes following auditory-based Targeted Cognitive Training (TCT). Here we evaluated the acute effect of TCT on cortical processes supporting auditory discrimination. METHODS: MMN was assessed in 28 SZ outpatients before and after

Memory template comparison processes in anhedonia and dysthymia.

Anhedonic subjects, potentially at risk for psychopathology because of a deficient ability to experience pleasure, have demonstrated a large N200 component in the event-related brain potential (ERP). The present experiment attempted to determine the psychological significance of this finding in light of Näätänen's (1990) distinction between N2a and N2b subcomponents. Anhedonics were contrasted with controls and dysthymics, an at-risk group reporting depression. Across groups, N2a was larger when a tone mismatched a longer run of preceding identical tones. Thus, an involuntary mismatch process

[Listening to music in hearing loss with and without a hearing aid].

By means of a questionnaire it was investigated how in individuals who had previously had normal hearing deafness influences their pleasure and habits in listening to music, and which role a hearing aid can play in this respect. Out of 330 questionnaires returned, 206 could be statistically evaluated. 95% reported that formerly they had liked music, light music coming from the radio being the most frequently mentioned type of music and medium. 36% had formerly played an instrument or had enjoyed singing. 79% feel that their deafness has affected their pleasure in listening to music. Cognitive evoked potential (P300): a metric for cerebral concussion.

Cognitive impairment has been reported to occur in minor head injury (concussion). The value of the P300 evoked potential as a measure of cerebral concussion was studied in 20 patients with minor head injury and compared with the data from 20 normal subjects. Significant abnormalities of the P300 latency and amplitude were noted in these patients in the post-concussion period. The abnormalities improved completely on repeat testing. The correlation of the P300 to other parameters of head injury is discussed. The P300 constitutes a simple laboratory test that is sensitive measure of cerebral dy

Hearing loss in rats first exposed to toluene as weanlings or as young adults.

Male Fischer-344 rats were exposed by inhalation to 1200 ppm toluene (14 hr/day, 7 days/week for 5 weeks) beginning just after weaning or as young adults. During the fifth week of exposure, they were trained to perform a multisensory conditioned pole-climb avoidance response (CAR) task using a 4-kHz tone, a change in the intensity of the test chamber light, or a nonaversive current on the grill floor as the stimuli. When tested the week after the exposures ended, both groups of toluene-exposed rats were deficient in their performance of the CAR to a 20-kHz tone. This effect was significantly g

Speech and voice rehabilitation in selected patients fitted with a bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA).

With the Birmingham osseointegrated implant programme there have been several patients with severe pre-lingual conductive hearing loss. The majority of these have been patients with Treacher Collins syndrome. There are characteristic features of speech and voice in those with long-standing conductive hearing loss. In addition, the associated abnormalities of jaw, teeth and palate may amplify the problem. There may be spontaneous improvement in features such as voice pitch, quality and intensity following the fitting of a BAHA. However, in those with a pre-lingual hearing impairment, speech the
