Parasitic weeds are major agricultural threats through fine-tuned chemical interactions with their hosts. We investigated the germination-stimulating metabolites released by Arabidopsis thaliana germinating seeds into the spermosphere, the zone surrounding the seeds and showed that host-parasite chemical recognition can be initiated at the earliest stages of host seed germination. Through co-germination assays, biochemical fractionation of host germinating seed exudates and a mutant approach targeting the glucosinolate (GSL) and strigolactone (SL) pathways, we demonstrated that germinating A.

Arsenic (As) contamination poses a serious threat to the safety and medicinal quality of Panax notoginseng, a high-value medicinal herb rich in triterpenoid saponins. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can improve plant tolerance to metal(loid) stress, but how AMF coordinate rhizosphere processes with host metabolic regulation to reduce As accumulation while maintaining medicinal quality remains poorly understood. Here, we integrated physiological assays, As partitioning and subcellular fractionation, rhizosphere microbiome profiling, root exudate metabolomics, phytohormone quantification, tra

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal that inhibits the growth of rapes (Brassica napus L.) in contaminated soils. While chitosan-modified biochar (KC) shows potential to reduce Cd availability, its interaction with root exudates in regulating Cd speciation, soil physicochemical properties, and microbial community structure (in rhizosphere/non-rhizosphere soils) remains unclear. To elucidate KC's remediation mechanism for Cd-contaminated soils, we prepared KC by modifying biochar (derived from Firmiana simplex leaves) with chitosan, and conducted pot experiments with five treatments: unco

Many herbivorous insects are mono- or oligophagous, having evolved to select a limited range of host plants. They specifically identify host-plant leaves using their keen sense of taste. Plant secondary metabolites and sugars are thought to be key chemical cues that enable insects to identify host plants and evaluate their quality as food. However, the neuronal and behavioral mechanisms of host-plant recognition are poorly understood. Here, we report a two-factor host acceptance system in larvae of the silkworm Bombyx mori, a specialist on several mulberry species. The first step is controlled

In plants, the mobile signal for systemic acquired resistance (SAR), an organism-wide state of enhanced defense to subsequent infections, has been elusive. By stimulating immune responses in mosaic tobacco plants created by grafting different genetic backgrounds, we showed that the methyl salicylate (MeSA) esterase activity of salicylic acid-binding protein 2 (SABP2), which converts MeSA into salicylic acid (SA), is required for SAR signal perception in systemic tissue, the tissue that does not receive the primary (initial) infection. Moreover, in plants expressing mutant SABP2 with unregulate

Agave lechuguilla is a widely distributed plant in arid ecosystems. It has been suggested that its microbiome is partially responsible for its great adaptability to the oligotrophic environments of the Chihuahuan Desert. To lead the recruitment of beneficial rhizobacteria, the root exudates are essential; however, the amino acids contained within these compounds had been largely overlooked. Thus, we investigated how the variations of amino acids in the rhizosphere at different growth stages of A. lechuguilla affect the rhizobacterial community composition, its functions, and activity of the be

Plants can specifically assemble beneficial rhizosphere microbiota through the 'cry for help' mechanism triggered by non-pathogenic elicitors, thereby promoting plant health. However, it remains unknown whether non-pathogenic strains can be used to induce plants to form a rhizomicrobiome capable of resisting herbivores. Here, we investigated how tomatoes enhance their defense capacity via the 'cry for help' response triggered by the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana. Our findings show that B. bassiana induces the formation of beneficial soil legacy in tomatoes, which significantly imp

Populus nigra buds contain resinous exudates rich in flavonoids, phenolic acids, terpenoids and other bioactive constituents. These exudates are the main botanical source of European Poplar-type propolis. Since hive-collected propolis shows strong botanical, geographical and hive contaminant variability, P. nigra bud resin exudate represents an attractive, standardizable and reproducible alternative for obtaining natural-complex ingredients. This study investigates the compositional relationship between Propolgemma® standardized P. nigra buds (PBHE) and European propolis (PHE) hydroalcoholic e

Alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (alkylated PAHs) are prevalent environmental contaminants, potentially exhibiting toxicity comparable to unsubstituted PAHs. Through systematic plant exposure experiments, this study investigated the transformation of alkylated PAHs, using 5-methylchrysene (CHR-5Me) as a model compound in pumpkin and ryegrass. By leveraging isotope-labeled and unlabeled standards to generate characteristic ion pairs, alongside high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) non-target screening and quantum chemical calculations, we effectively characterized the metabolic pat

Resource islands are vegetative formations in arid and semi-arid ecosystems that harbor microorganisms facing extreme conditions. However, there is a limitation in the knowledge of the agricultural biotechnological potential of microorganisms present in these islands. This study aimed to determine the capacity of Bacillus velezensis C3-3 and Cytobacillus sp. T106 isolates from resource islands to promote plant growth and control the phytopathogen Rhizoctonia solani. The bacteria were sequenced, and both grew at 50 °C, resisted 5% NaCl, withstood UV exposure, and grew in extreme pH conditions.

Pseudomonas fluorescens is a plant growth promoting rhizobacterium that provides nutrients for growth and induces systemic resistance against plant diseases. It has been linked with a number of human diseases including nosocomial infections and bacterial cystitis. Chemotactic motility of P. fluorescens towards root exudates plays a crucial role in establishing a symbiotic relationship with host plants. The P. fluorescens chemotactic transducer of amino acids type B (CtaB) mediates chemotaxis towards amino acids. As a step towards elucidation of the structural basis of ligand recognition by Cta

Infectious diseases caused by fungi and bacteria are among the major causes of illness and death worldwide. This is mainly implicated by the antimicrobial resistance of the current treatment regimens. Since plant products are house stores of bioactive compounds, it is essential to screen plant-based antimicrobials to come up with novel medicines that counter the grave consequences of antimicrobial resistance. In the folk medicine of Ethiopia, Aloe megalacantha is used for the treatment of wound, dandruff, malaria, diabetes, impotence, colon cleansing, amoeba, ascariasis, abdominal pain, urine

The increasing limitations of chemical pesticides such as environmental pollution, pathogen resistance, and threats to human and ecosystem health have increased the demand for sustainable, biologically based crop protection methods. Eco-smart biocontrol has emerged as a game-changing paradigm that uses beneficial microorganisms associated with plants to suppress phytopathogens, boost plant immunity, and make agroecosystems more resilient over time. Moving beyond traditional single-strain biocontrol, eco-smart biocontrol integrates multi-omics discovery, artificial intelligence-assisted predict

N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) and its derivative 6PPD-quinone (6PPD-Q) are emerging concerns due to their widespread occurrence and poorly understood ecological effects. This study reveals the multifaceted toxicity mechanisms of these compounds in water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) through an integrated physiological-multi-omics approach. We demonstrate that 6PPD-Q triggers severe oxidative stress and photosynthetic impairment, reducing the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) by 22.58 % at 20 μg/L. While plants activated defense responses through phytohorm

Aloe vera has wide spread use in health products, and despite several reports on the whole plant and inner gel, little work has been performed on the leaf exudate. Our aim was to evaluate the in vitro efficacy of Aloe vera leaf exudate (AVL) in leishmaniasis. Irrespective of the disease manifestation, promastigotes from strains responsible for cutaneous, mucocutaneous, and visceral leishmaniasis were susceptible to AVL and their IC(50) ranged from 100 to 180 microg/ml. In axenic amastigotes cultured from a L. donovani strain 2001 responsible for visceral leishmaniasis, the IC(50) was 6.0 micro

Nutrient imbalances, soil salinity, and shrinking arable land threaten global food security, driving demand for sustainable biofertilizer alternatives to chemical inputs. Aquatic ecosystem-derived biofertilizers such as Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense (MSR-1) are promising sustainable substitutes and show strong agricultural potential due to their stress tolerance, adaptability, and plant growth-promoting traits. This study investigated the ability of MSR-1 to enhance the growth and productivity of tomato and paddy under normal, iron-deficient, and saline conditions. MSR-1 was cultured in mod

Nine hunting breed dogs were treated for thoracic empyema of undetermined origin. Seven dogs returned to normal health after combined pleural drainage by modified Seldinger technique and long-term chemotherapy. Two were destroyed in the early phase of treatment. One died and one was destroyed due to recurrence. Associated signs in four of the dogs included thoracic wall swellings. In two of these, very small foreign bodies of plant origin were found intrathoracically at surgery. Predominantly anaerobic commensals of the mucous membranes were isolated from pleural exudate. Post-mortem examinati

Crop nutrition is frequently inadequate as a result of the expansion of cropping into marginal lands, elevated crop yields placing increasing demands on soil nutrient reserves, and environmental and economic concerns about applying fertilizers. Plants exposed to nutrient deficiency activate a range of mechanisms that result in increased nutrient availability in the rhizosphere compared with the bulk soil. Plants may change their root morphology, increase the affinity of nutrient transporters in the plasma membrane and exude organic compounds (carboxylates, phenolics, carbohydrates, enzymes, et

A feasibility study is presented for a bioremediation intervention to restore agricultural activity in a field hit by a diesel oil spill from an oil pipeline. The analysis of the real contaminated soil was conducted following two approaches. The first concerned the assessment of the biodegradative capacity of the indigenous microbial community through laboratory-scale experimentation with different treatments (natural attenuation, landfarming, landfarming + bioaugmentation). The second consisted of testing the effectiveness of phytoremediation with three plant species: Zea mays (corn), Lupinus
