Dual efficacy of chromium (Cr) tolerant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in conferring Cr tolerance to eggplant via improved growth and physiological aspects.

Chromium (Cr) contamination in agricultural soils, similar to other heavy metals (HMs), poses a serious threat to global food security. To mitigate its adverse effects, researchers are increasingly focusing on cost-effective and eco-friendly strategies, such as the use of Cr-tolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). The integration of these beneficial microbes with plant growth regulators (PGRs) like indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) offers a promising approach for reducing metal bioavailability and enhancing plant tolerance. Hence, we used a pre-isolated and pre-characterized Cr-tolerant

Simulations of historical impacts of climate change and atmospheric chemistry on a northeastern U.S. forest ecosystem.

Climate change, land disturbance, and atmospheric chemistry have substantially impacted northeastern hardwood forests. However, it is challenging to quantify the exacerbating or mitigating interactions among these disturbances on carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and water cycling in forest ecosystems. To evaluate these effects, we applied the PnET-CN-daily model to simulate the historical patterns of C, N, and water cycling at Harvard Forest in central Massachusetts, United States. The model was run with a reconstructed historical climate and air chemistry scenario, and results were compared with fie

Molecular Regulatory Mechanism of Exogenous Hydrogen Sulfide in Alleviating Low-Temperature Stress in Pepper Seedlings.

Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is sensitive to low temperatures, with low-temperature stress affecting its plant growth, yield, and quality. In this study, we analyzed the effects of exogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on pepper seedlings subjected to low-temperature stress. Exogenous H2S increased the content of endogenous H2S and its synthetase activity, enhanced the antioxidant capacity of membrane lipids, and protected the integrity of the membrane system. Exogenous H2S also promoted the Calvin cycle to protect the integrity of photosynthetic organs; enhanced the photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomat

Response of Medical Cannabis to Magnesium (Mg) Supply at the Vegetative Growth Phase.

Recent studies demonstrated a significant impact of some major macronutrients on function and production of medical cannabis plants, yet information on the effect of most nutrients, including Mg, is scarce. Magnesium is required for major physiological functions and metabolic processes in plants, and in the present study we studied the effects of five Mg treatments (2, 20, 35, 70, and 140 mg L-1 Mg), on plant development and function, and distribution of minerals in drug-type (medical) cannabis plants, at the vegetative growth phase. The plants were cultivated in pots under controlled environm

Influence of earthworm Eisenia fetida on Iris pseudacorus's photosynthetic characteristics, evapotranspiration losses and purifying capacity in constructed wetland systems.

Four constructed wetland systems were studied to investigate the effects of adding Eisenia fetida on the purifying capacity of constructed wetlands. Addition of E. fetida increased the photosynthetic rate (Pn), transpiration rate (Tr) and chlorophyll meter value of leaves of Iris pseudacorus L. in the constructed wetlands by 16, 35 and 7%, respectively. Compared with the substrate only system, evapotranspiration losses were increased by 8, 48 and 56% for the wetland systems with substrate and E. fetida, with substrate and I. pseudacorus, and with substrate, I. pseudacorus and E. fetida, respec

Bacteria associated with oak and ash on a TCE-contaminated site: characterization of isolates with potential to avoid evapotranspiration of TCE.

BACKGROUND, AIM, AND SCOPE: Along transects under a mixed woodland of English Oak (Quercus robur) and Common Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) growing on a trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated groundwater plume, sharp decreases in TCE concentrations were observed, while transects outside the planted area did not show this remarkable decrease. This suggested a possibly active role of the trees and their associated bacteria in the remediation process. Therefore, the cultivable bacterial communities associated with both tree species growing on this TCE-contaminated groundwater plume were investigated in o

Dynamic Physiological Phenotyping of Drought-Stressed Pepper Plants Treated With "Productivity-Enhancing" and "Survivability-Enhancing" Biostimulants.

The improvement of crop productivity under abiotic stress is one of the biggest challenges faced by the agricultural scientific community. Despite extensive research, the research-to-commercial transfer rate of abiotic stress-resistant crops remains very low. This is mainly due to the complexity of genotype × environment interactions and in particular, the ability to quantify the dynamic plant physiological response profile to a dynamic environment. Most existing phenotyping facilities collect information using robotics and automated image acquisition and analysis. However, their ability to di

The CsTBH-CsROP2 Module Regulates Waterlogging Tolerance via Auxin-Mediated Adventitious Root Formation in Cucumber.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) requires frequent irrigation due to its shallow root system and high transpiration rate of the aboveground parts. However, it is also prone to waterlogging damage. Therefore, understanding its response to waterlogging is crucial for breeding waterlogging-tolerant varieties. Although Rho of Plants GTPases play well-established roles in regulating development and stress signalling, their functions in plant adaptation to waterlogging stress has yet to be fully elucidated. Here, we identified nine CsROP genes in the cucumber genome, which exhibit evolutionary diversif

Physiological and growth responses of Chinese chives (Allium tuberosum) to elevated CO2 concentrations and infestation by fungus gnat (Bradysia impatiens).

Elevated CO2 (eCO2) levels can alter plant physiology by reducing stomatal density, weakening transpiration, enhancing photosynthesis, accelerating growth, increasing the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, and lowering nitrogen content. This study investigated the combined effects of eCO2 stress and Bradysia impatiens infestation on Chinese chive (Allium tuberosum) under controlled CO2 growth chamber conditions. A factorial experimental design was implemented, incorporating two CO2 concentration levels and three fungus gnat infestation intensities. The results revealed significant increases in leaf wid

Metabolomics and physio-chemical analyses of mulberry plants leaves response to manganese deficiency and toxicity reveal key metabolites and their pathways in manganese tolerance.

INTRODUCTION: Manganese (Mn) plays a pivotal role in plant growth and development. Aside aiding in plant growth and development, Mn as heavy metal (HM) can be toxic in soil when applied in excess. Morus alba is an economically significant plant, capable of adapting to a range of environmental conditions and possessing the potential for phytoremediation of contaminated soil by HMs. The mechanism by which M. alba tolerates Mn stresses remains obscure. METHODS: In this study, Mn concentrations comprising sufficiency (0.15 mM), higher regimes (1.5 mM and 3 mM), and deficiency (0 mM and 0.03 mM),

Integrated physiological and omics analyses reveal the mechanism of beneficial fungal Trichoderma sp. alleviating cadmium toxicity in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.).

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal and readily accumulates in tobacco, which imperils public health via Cd exposure from smoking. Beneficial microbes have a pivotal role in promoting plant growth, especially under environmental stresses such as heavy metal stresses. In this study, we introduced a novel fungal strain Trichoderma nigricans T32781, and investigated its capacity to alleviate Cd-induced stress in tobacco plants through comprehensive physiological and omics analyses. Our findings revealed that T32781 inoculation in soil leads to a substantial reduction in Cd-induced growth i

Physiological and morphoanatomical effects of glyphosate in Eugenia uniflora, a Brazilian plant species native to the Atlantic Forest biome.

The herbicide glyphosate can cause severe ecotoxicological effects on non-target organisms. Eugenia uniflora L. (Myrtaceae) is very important for in situ environmental biomonitoring due to its wide distribution in the Atlantic Forest biome. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the response of E. uniflora leaves to glyphosate. Eight-month-old plants were exposed to an aerial application of the herbicide at concentrations of 0, 144, 432, 864, and 1440 g a. e. ha-1 (grams of acid equivalent per hectare). Evaluations were performed on the 12th day after the glyphosate application (DAA). An accumulat

Ozone exposure causes a decoupling of conductance and photosynthesis: implications for the Ball-Berry stomatal conductance model.

Industrialization has significantly altered atmospheric chemistry by increasing concentrations of chemicals such as nitrogen oxides (NO( x )) and volatile organic carbon, which react in the presence of sunlight to produce tropospheric ozone (O(3)). Ozone is a powerful oxidant that causes both visual and physiological damage to plants, impairing the ability of the plant to control processes like photosynthesis and transpiration. Damage to photosynthesis and stomatal conductance does not always occur at the same rate, which generates a problem when using the Ball-Berry model to predict stomatal

Trichloroethylene uptake by apple and peach trees and transfer to fruit.

A greenhouse study was conducted to quantify 14C-trichloroethylene (TCE) uptake and transfer into the edible fruit of apple and peach trees. Trees were subsurface irrigated with solutions of 14C [TCE] that bracketed groundwater concentrations (5 and 500 microg/L) found in residential areas surrounding Hill Air Force Base, UT, where trace amounts of TCE had been found in several fruits during a preliminary field survey. Nondosed control trees were grown within the canopy of the dosed trees and in a separate greenhouse. Tissue samples were analyzed for 14C and TCE using combustion/liquid scintil

Application of Silicon, Zinc, and Zeolite Nanoparticles-A Tool to Enhance Drought Stress Tolerance in Coriander Plants for Better Growth Performance and Productivity.

Drought stress in arid regions is a serious factor affecting yield quantity and quality of economic crops. Under drought conditions, the application of nano-elements and nano-agents of water retention improved the water use efficiency, growth performance, and yield quantity of drought-stressed plants. For this objective, two field experiments were performed and organized as randomized complete block designs with six replications. The treatments included kaolin (5 t. ha-1) bentonite (12.5 t. ha-1), perlite (1.25 t.ha-1), N-zeolite (1.3 L.ha-1), N-silicon (2.5 L.ha-1), and N-zinc (2.5 L.ha-1). T

Calcium addition modulates water use strategy of tree species with contrasting Al-tolerance in South China secondary forest.

Long-term acid deposition in South China has led to increased aluminum (Al) toxicity, while plants typically adopt diverse Al-tolerance strategies to adapt to acidified soils. Ca addition is commonly applied to alleviate acid deposition and associated Al stress, yet it remains unclear whether increased Ca availability modulates plant water use strategies among species with contrasting Al tolerance. We conducted a field experiment in a secondary evergreen broadleaved forest to simulated acid deposition and Ca addition. We quantified leaf transpiration, intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi), and

The Heterogeneous Effects of Epichloë and Rhizophagus irregularis on the Physiological and Rhizosphere Microbial Community of Festuca rubra.

In nature, a significant number of plant species form symbiotic associations with microorganisms, with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and endophytic fungi being two prevalent groups of these partners. However, the ability to establish such symbioses with AMF and endophytic fungi is limited to a small fraction of native grass species. Nitrogen is a crucial nutrient for plant growth, yet it is often a limiting factor, underscoring the importance of understanding how plants acquire it. AMF enhance plant growth by improving nitrogen uptake efficiency, but the combined effects of endophytic fun

Mitigation of salinity stress in cucumber seedlings by exogenous hydrogen sulfide.

This research hypothesized that tolerance of cucumber seedlings to salinity stress could be increased by hydrogen sulfide (H2S) treatments. In pot experiments, the cucumber seedlings were exposed to three levels of salt stress (0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl), and NaHS as H2S donor was foliar applied to the cucumber seedlings at five different doses (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 µM). The effects of the treatments on cucumber seedlings were tested with plant growth properties as well as physiological and biochemical analyses. As the salinity level increased, plant growth properties and chlorophyll reading valu

Individual and Interactive Effects of Temperature and Watering Regime on Canola Growth and Physiological Characteristics.

Although many studies have considered the effects of temperature and water on plants, the combined effects of these factors on canola (Brassica napus) growth, physiological traits, and fatty acids require more attention. Canola is an important oilseed crop in Canada and around the world and fatty acids act as regulators of stress signaling. We grew plants under two temperature regimes (22°C/18°C and 28°C/24°C; 16 h light and 8 h dark) and two watering regimes (well-watered and water stressed) in controlled-environment growth chamber for 3 weeks after 1 week of initial growth under 22°C/18°C. Biobased Boston Ivy-Inspired Cryogel Integrating Radiative Cooling and Phase Change Energy Storage for Adaptive Thermal Regulation.

Boston ivy is a traditional plant for building heat management through shading and transpiration. Inspired by its "vine-leaf" system, we design a bionic cryogel that functionalizes daytime cooling and nighttime thermal buffering, promoting sustainable and comfortable housing and living environments. The aligned channels mimic vine tendrils, delivering an ultralow radial thermal conductivity (0.035 W m-1·K-1), high solar reflectance (95.28%), and high infrared emissivity (97.04%). Embedded phase-change materials (PCMs) present leaf-like, functionalized structures that store excess solar energy
