Infants' organization of pull-to-stand behaviors during play: A longitudinal investigation.

Pulling-to-stand (PTS) is an important transitional posture which may facilitate the shift to walking, but infants still frequently PTS even after learning to walk. Using a group of 13 infants who had learned to PTS about three weeks prior, we aimed to track how gains in PTS, standing, and walking experience contributed to infants' selection of more skilled PTS strategies and reorganized how infants used PTS to facilitate free play. We tracked spontaneous PTS over 10 biweekly laboratory sessions and video-coded functional measures of PTS skill, including hand-, knee-, and foot-use (e.g., later

Parental Perceptions of Environmental Factors on Preschoolers' Outdoor Play in 19 Low-Income, Middle-Income, and High-Income Countries.

BACKGROUND: Environmental factors influence children's development. However, their impact on outdoor play among children from international settings remains understudied. This study examined associations between parent perceptions of environmental factors and outdoor play among an international sample of preschool-aged children. METHODS: Data were sourced from the pilot phases of the SUNRISE International Study of Movement Behaviors in the Early Years. Parents completed a questionnaire about their child's outdoor play and environmental factors that influenced their child's participation in ou

Children at play: Exploring perceptions and preferences in Sarawak, Malaysia, through a qualitative lens.

INTRODUCTION: Play is fundamental to children's holistic development, encompassing cognitive, emotional, and social growth. Whereas play preferences are often shaped by sociocultural and environmental factors, limited research exists on how children from different Malaysian settings, particularly in East Malaysia, perceive and engage in play. This study explores the rationale behind play experiences and preferences among urban and rural children in Sarawak. METHODS: A qualitative approach was employed to capture the experiences of 10 (n = 10) typically developing children aged 7 to 9 years fr

Functional and Morphological Differences in the Play Face and Full Play Face in Lowland Gorillas, a Hominid Species: Implications for the Evolutionary Roots of Smile and Laugh Face.

OBJECTIVE: Play Face (PF) and Full Play Face (FPF) in the great apes-homologous to human smile and laugh-face-have been considered a single phenomenon. However, if natural selection has preserved two expressions, probably their adaptive value differs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected video data on play interactions in two lowland gorilla groups (N = 21; Gorilla gorilla gorilla) housed at La Vallée des Singes and the ZooParc de Beauval (France). Lacking a tool tailored for gorillas during this study, we analyzed facial action-unit activation via chimpFACS and OpenFace. RESULTS: We found th

Fatal bowel perforation caused by ingestion of high-powered magnets in a 6-year-old boy.

Foreign body ingestion in children is a frequent cause for medical consultation. Although most foreign bodies are spontaneously eliminated from the gastrointestinal tract, life-threatening complications such as gastrointestinal obstruction or perforation can occur. We report the case of a 6-year-old boy who died 2 days after the onset of nausea and abdominal pain, with no foreign body ingestion witnessed or reported in the previous days. Autopsy showed a diffuse peritonitis and a perforation of the transverse colon caused by three high-powered magnets stacked together, and attached to the oute

Are Gender Identities and Gender Ideologies Associated with the Variety and Type of Owned Sex Toys? Evidence from a Large Italian Sample of Cisgender Individuals.

Research on the use of sex toys has been primarily performed from a medical perspective, while there is still limited research from a psychosocial perspective. To bridge this gap, in this study we examined whether some psychosocial variables might be linked to sex toy ownership in a sample of 3960 Italian (cisgender men and women) sex toy buyers. More specifically, we investigated the association between gender identities and ideologies and the variety and types of sex toys owned. Based on the data, we detected two dimensions underlying the ownership of sex toys: (1) orientation to owning kink

Empirical evidence for robust personality-gaming disorder associations from a large-scale international investigation applying the APA and WHO frameworks.

Disordered gaming has gained increased medical attention and was recently included in the eleventh International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) by the World Health Organization (WHO) after its earlier inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (fifth revision) (DSM-5) as an emerging disorder by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Although many studies have investigated associations between personality and disordered gaming, no previous research compared the differential associations between personality and disordered gaming with time spent gaming. Due t

Regulating Child Sex Robots: Restriction or Experimentation?

In July 2014, the roboticist Ronald Arkin suggested that child sex robots could be used to treat those with paedophilic predilections in the same way that methadone is used to treat heroin addicts. Taking this onboard, it would seem that there is reason to experiment with the regulation of this technology. But most people seem to disagree with this idea, with legal authorities in both the UK and US taking steps to outlaw such devices. In this article, I subject these different regulatory attitudes to critical scrutiny. In doing so, I make three main contributions to the debate. First, I presen

"Slime" dermatitis, a fad-associated chronic hand dermatitis.

"Slime" is the colloquial name for a non-Newtonian viscoelastic putty-like substance that is currently a popular plaything among pre-teens and adolescents. Several ingredients in homemade slime recipes may cause irritant or allergic contact dermatitis. We report two children who developed slime-associated chronic hand dermatitis, more prominently on their dominant hand. We review the potential for irritant and allergic contact dermatoses as the causes of dermatitis associated with homemade slime.

Investigation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in old consumer products in India.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) used extensively over the past 3 decades as flame retardants in most types of polymers, all over the world, have been identified as global pollutants. PBDEs pose various health problems such as thyroid hormone disruption, permanent learning and memory impairment, behavioral changes, hearing deficits, delayed puberty onset, fetal malformations, and possibly cancer. Many measurements of PBDEs in various matrices from Sweden, Holland, Japan, the USA, and elsewhere have been reported, but few measurements are available for India. In this study, a preliminary

LEGO therapy and the social use of language programme: an evaluation of two social skills interventions for children with high functioning autism and Asperger Syndrome.

LEGO therapy and the Social Use of Language Programme (SULP) were evaluated as social skills interventions for 6-11 year olds with high functioning autism and Asperger Syndrome. Children were matched on CA, IQ, and autistic symptoms before being randomly assigned to LEGO or SULP. Therapy occurred for 1 h/week over 18 weeks. A no-intervention control group was also assessed. Results showed that the LEGO therapy group improved more than the other groups on autism-specific social interaction scores (Gilliam Autism Rating Scale). Maladaptive behaviour decreased significantly more in the LEGO and S

Teaching young children with autism to talk.

Frequent functional spoken communication is a common goal for young children with autism. We propose that the number of different nonimitative, referential, conventional, and communicative words used in a language sample is a reasonable measure of the behavior we wish to increase in such children. We review our own and others' studies focusing on young (i.e., 2 to 3 years old) children with autism to provide a rationale for including object play and nonverbal communication as potentially important treatment goals. Children who are not yet fluent in object play and nonverbal communication may n

"It's a hurricane! it's a hurricane!": can music facilitate social constructive and sociodramatic play in a preschool classroom?

Sustaining attention and successfully engaging with others in collaborative play are important accomplishments focused on in preschool classrooms and childcare centers. In addition, music is frequently used in early childhood classrooms, and even recommended as an environmental feature to motivate and regulate children's behavior. Although pretend play provides appealing opportunities for developing these social abilities, no studies to date have explored the use of music as a tool to motivate and sustain constructive and social pretend play. Results from the current study indicate that within

Behavioral approaches to promoting play.

A variety of techniques grounded in behavioral psychology, and more specifically in applied behavior analysis, have been established to increase and improve play skills in children with autistic spectrum disorders. This article introduces a set of efficacious methods, which range from highly structured techniques to more naturalistic strategies. It focuses on object play as other authors in the issue discuss social play in greater depth. Behavioral techniques that are reviewed include: discrete trial training, use of stereotyped behaviors to increase play skills, pivotal response training, rec

Scooter injuries: a new pediatric morbidity.

OBJECTIVE: To describe types of injuries, mechanisms of injury, and treatment of injuries caused by scooter use in children, and to discuss issues of injury prevention in children who use scooters. STUDY DESIGN: Data were collected from 14 children seen by a general pediatrician and an orthopedic surgeon over a 3-month period in the summer of 2000. Detailed histories were obtained from patients and their families, and medical records were reviewed. RESULTS: Eleven of the 14 patients suffered fractures. The injuries in the other 3 patients were a large abrasion, a laceration, and a septic kne

Etiology of supracondylar humerus fractures.

The specific etiology of supracondylar humerus fractures in children is not well known. All supracondylar humerus fractures treated at Children's Hospital and Health Center, San Diego (CHSD) over an 8-year period (n = 391) were reviewed to determine specific information about the manner in which the injury occurred. Girls tended to sustain these fractures more often, and the nondominant arm was more often injured. Falls from a height accounted for 70% of the fractures. Children < or = 3 years old tended to fall off of household objects (beds, couches, other objects 3-6 feet high), and children

Differences in maternal behavior of rats and the sociosexual development of the offspring.

This paper describes experiments designed to investigate long-term behavioral consequences for offspring of changes in maternal behavior directed toward them as pups. Specifically, the hypothesis was considered that experimentally induced alterations in maternal behavior would result in general and wide-ranging effects on offspring development, including effects on later social and sexual behavior. The first experiment looked at the effects of changing pup odors on maternal responsiveness toward the pups, and showed that the application of perfume, particularly to the anogenital region, result

Reducing healthcare anxiety in children with medical play: assessing effectiveness of the teddy bear bash.

BACKGROUND: Medical anxiety is common in the pediatric population. Anxiety may trigger persistent negative emotions regarding medical care, cause decreased cooperation during procedures, and lead to higher reports of post-procedure pain. Teddy Bear Hospital (TBH) events may reduce pediatric anxiety related to health care visits by providing exposure to medical professionals and simulating procedures in a play environment. Literature on the effectiveness of such events is currently limited. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of a TBH-modelled event, the Teddy Bear Bash, in reducing pediatric
