A case of pneumopericardium, without concomitant pneumothorax, resulting from high frequency jet ventilation during laser surgery of the hypopharynx is described. The patient, a four-year-old boy, suffered cardiac arrest as a consequence of the incident. The pneumopericardium was likely to have been caused by obstruction to the expiratory flow during surgery. Other possible explanations for the incident are discussed.

Various complications of hyperemesis gravidarum and pneumomediastinum have been documented in the literature. Commonly, these cases resolve spontaneously or with the use of antiemetics and supportive care. In rare instances, these symptoms persist into the second trimester and are associated with an increased risk of complications. INTRODUCTION: Acute tension pneumopericardium due to gastric perforation is a rare and often lethal condition. Only a few case reports have been described in the literature. Spontaneous pneumopericardium occurred in a patient almost 4 weeks after bilateral lung transplantation for cystic fibrosis. The patient had no specific complaints and was in stable haemodynamic condition. We suggest that this pneumopericardium was related to a concomitant active cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. After treatment of the CMV infection, the pneumopericardium resolved spontaneously.

There is the communication between the mediastinum, pericardium, and retroperitoneum. We present the first report of rare complications (pneumomediastinum and pneumopericardium) after retroperitoneal transpsoas lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) surgery.
