Police attitudes toward people with intellectual disability: an evaluation of awareness training.

It is argued that more favourable police attitudes to people with intellectual disability (ID) are essential in meeting the police code of ethics, which stresses impartiality and respect for human dignity. The need to acknowledge and investigate the extent of support for eugenic attitudes in other key professionals who have a significant role in the successful inclusion of people with ID in community settings is discussed. The present paper reports on the evaluation of an awareness training event conducted by the Royal Ulster Constabulary in terms of the impact on attitudes towards people with

Strengthening Partnerships Between Syringe Services Programs and Police in the United States.

Syringe services programs (SSPs) are community-based prevention interventions that provide a range of services to people who use drugs (PWUD), including access to sterile injection equipment, treatment referrals, infectious disease testing, and overdose prevention through naloxone distribution. Research shows that SSPs are effective at reducing infectious disease transmission and connecting people to treatment. SSPs are also considered safe, cost-effective, and improve public safety. Despite strong research support, police in the United States (US) have historically opposed SSPs due to the bel

Police Violence Exposure Among Young Adults in a U.S. National Probability Sample.

Police violence is a critical social determinant of health in the United States, but there is an absence of data on prevalence and sociodemographic disparities from national probability samples. This study aimed to determine the past-year prevalence of physical, sexual, psychological, and neglectful police violence exposure among young adults in the United States and to identify inequities in exposure. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the National Survey of Poly-Victimization and Suicide Risk, a population-based probability sample of noninstitutionalized young adults (18-29 years; N

Kinship, favors, and officer integrity: exploring wasta in Kuwait's National Police Force.

INTRODUCTION: Wasta, a culturally ingrained practice of favoritism prevalent in Arab culture, presents significant challenges to governance and organizational integrity in the Middle East. However, empirical research on its role in policing - an area notoriously tied to its use - is extremely scarce. This study proposes a framework explaining the elements that perpetuate wasta and examines officers' attitudes toward the practice. METHODS: A mixed-methods design was employed. Survey data were collected from 199 officers to identify correlates of attitudes toward wasta, and semi-structured inte

Patients discharged to police custody after paramedic evaluation: an observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In Finland, more than a third of the patients attended by the emergency medical services (EMS) are discharged on scene without ambulance transport, with reported recontact of <10% and 24-hour to 48-hour mortality of 0.3%-3.5%. In cases of disturbing or violent behaviour or suspected criminal activity, patients can also be discharged directly to police custody, with or without consultation with a prehospital physician. This study reports the incidence of patient deterioration in these situations. METHODS: All EMS calls between 2013 and 2021 with patient discharge to police custody

Wellbeing Among Police Personnel Investigating Online Child Sexual Abuse: A Scoping Review.

Online child sexual abuse (CSA) crimes have increased significantly in recent years, reflecting broader access to the internet and the global proliferation of CSA content. In response, national police forces have established specialized investigative teams. Notably, repeated exposure to CSA material has been identified as a significant stressor for police personnel, potentially increasing the risk of secondary traumatic stress and burnout. Therefore, understanding and addressing the impact of continuous CSA exposure on personnel's wellbeing is essential within this area of digital policing. Th

Evaluating Veterans Response Teams and Police Interventions on Veterans' Health Care Utilization.

This study examined the effects of veteran-specific cooperative police interventions, including a Veterans Response Team (VRT) and broad collaboration between local police departments and a Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center police department (local-VA police [LVP]), on veterans' health care utilization. Data were analyzed on 241 veterans (51 received VRT and 190 received LVP intervention) in Wilmington, Delaware. Nearly all veterans in the sample were enrolled in VA health care at the time of police intervention. Veterans who received VRT or LVP interventions showed similar increases in use

Inequities in Anticipatory Stress of Police Brutality and Depressed Mood Among Women.

BACKGROUND: Police brutality towards racially minoritized populations is structural racism. Even though most of the research on the health impacts of police brutality centers the experiences of men, women are also harmed by this structural violence. OBJECTIVES: We identify factors associated with the anticipatory stress of police brutality among women and examine its relationship with depressed mood across ethno-racial categories. METHODS: Data came from the cross-sectional Survey of the Health of Urban Residents in the United States (N = 2796). Logistic regressions were used to identify fac

Surveillance of Domestic Violence Using Text Mining Outputs From Australian Police Records.

In Australia, domestic violence reports are mostly based on data from the police, courts, hospitals, and ad hoc surveys. However, gaps exist in reporting information such as victim injuries, mental health status and abuse types. The police record details of domestic violence events as structured information (e.g., gender, postcode, ethnicity), but also in text narratives describing other details such as injuries, substance use, and mental health status. However, the voluminous nature of the narratives has prevented their use for surveillance purposes. We used a validated text mining methodolog

Brief trauma therapy for occupational trauma-related PTSD/CPTSD in UK police.

BACKGROUND: Police are frequently exposed to occupational trauma, making them vulnerable to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions. Through personal and occupational trauma police are also at risk of developing Complex PTSD (CPTSD), associated with prolonged and repetitive trauma. Police Occupational Health Services require effective interventions to treat officers experiencing mental health conditions, including CPTSD. However, there is a lack of guidance for the treatment of occupational trauma. AIMS: To explore differences in demographics and trauma exposu

Homelessness and police-recorded crime victimisation: a nationwide, register-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is associated with crime victimisation, which is a leading cause of death, exacerbates health problems, and increases the risk of violence. We aimed to study the risk of police-recorded crime victimisation in individuals with experiences of homelessness compared with the general population. METHODS: We did a nationwide, register-based cohort study of people aged 15 years or older, who were alive in 2001 and born in Denmark between 1980 and 2001. The cohort was constructed using the Danish Civil Registration System, with data linked across other registries (including t

School police officers' roles: The influence of social, developmental and historical contexts.

Amid national protests over police brutality, debates over law enforcement in schools have been reignited. Though research has focused on the consequences of police presence in schools, few studies have investigated the roles of school police officers (SPOs) and whether the larger contexts influence them. Using a bioecological framework (Bronfenbrenner and Morris, 2006), we examined how historical, social and developmental contexts shape SPOs' views of their roles and the challenges and opportunities they encounter. Nineteen 90-min focus groups with 45 SPOs from one large school police departm

[Population of people placed in police custody, hidden barometer of diverted medicines].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The population of people in police custody is a sentinel niche that is poorly represented in the "usual panels" of public health studies. The aim is to make an overview of their diversion of drugs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study based on cases of misuse in a sample of people in custody examined between 2015 and 2016 at the forensic medicine unit of the hospital Hôtel-Dieu-Paris. RESULTS: Of the 5149 medical examinations, 302 were for substance use disorder or drug misuse. In 2016, the number of notifications for misuse of clonazepam increased (n=65); the us

Posttraumatic stress disorder and complex posttraumatic stress disorder in UK police officers.

BACKGROUND: We investigated work-related exposure to stressful and traumatic events in police officers, including repeated exposure to traumatic materials, and predicted that ICD-11 complex PTSD (CPTSD) would be more prevalent than posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The effects of demographic variables on exposure and PTSD were examined, along with whether specific types of exposure were uniquely associated with PTSD or CPTSD. METHODS: An online survey covering issues about trauma management, wellbeing and working conditions was disseminated via social media and official policing channels

Amniotic fluid embolism: a cause of sudden maternal death and police inquest.

Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare, unforeseeable, unpreventable, and dreadful complication of pregnancy. Histological diagnosis is still the criterion standard for its detection because of the lack of any reliable clinical laboratory tests. The diagnosis of AFE has a close association with medicolegal aspects of obstetric death. Amniotic fluid embolism occurs when massive amount of amniotic fluid abnormally enters the maternal venous system. We report a case of a 33-year-old healthy woman (G2, P2, L1) admitted to a private nursing care hospital with 37 weeks gestation for delivery. She n

Forensic and police identification of "X" bodies. A 6-years French experience.

The identification of X bodies is an everyday preoccupation in forensic pathology. This retrospective analysis studied all methods of identification and characteristics of unidentified bodies arrived in the Department of Forensic Medicine and Pathology (University Hospital R. Poincaré, Garches, France) during a 6-years period (2003-2009). The aim was to determine the identification methods used during all the forensic investigations, but also to study causes and manner of death in this sample of the population. A total of 9.1% of all autopsies were on X cadavers (217 cases out of 2384). On thi

The second violence: Police responses to family violence as a public health exposure.

OBJECTIVES: This paper contributes to a broader survivor-led program of research on second violence: the institutional reproduction of harm through systems formally designed to respond to violence. Within that broader program, the paper focuses on one police station encounter to examine how police contact can operate as a modifiable public health exposure in family and domestic violence response. STUDY DESIGN: Survivor-led autoethnographic case study. METHODS: Data were drawn from The Second Violence, a four-year, ethics-approved autoethnographic study documenting lived experience of navigat
