Measuring and modelling the structural dynamics of poricidal anthers: a mechatronic approach.

The mechanical dynamics of poricidal stamens play a crucial role in buzz pollination, but they have only been studied in a few species showing comparatively less curvature. This paper presents an integrated experimental-computational approach to characterize the dynamic behaviour of the morphologically more complex stamens of Medinilla magnifica. An experimental set-up employing a custom-built shaker and a laser triangulation sensor is developed to measure the stamen motion with high spatial and temporal resolution. The resulting displacement transmissibility reveals three distinct resonances,

Allergen-controlled study of intranasal immunotherapy for ragweed hay fever.

Previous studies of intranasal immunotherapy have not included control groups treated with an irrelevant allergen. In the present double-blind study, we tested the effectiveness of intranasal immunotherapy in 20 patients sensitive to both short ragweed (SRW) and orchard grass (OG). Patients sprayed increasing concentrations of either SRW (n = 11) or OG (n = 9) extract intranasally six times per day for 8 wk before the SRW pollination season. The effects of this treatment were determined by analysis of symptom score diaries and clinical examinations during the SRW pollination season. SRW-treate

Reconstruction of speciation by modification of major-effect genes in Petunia.

Reproductive isolation within and between populations was conventionally thought to proceed gradually through many mutations of small phenotypic effect. Contrary to this view, recent theory predicts that large-effect mutations become plausible when populations are far from their phenotypic optimum. Changes in pollinator assemblages severely compromise the reproductive success of many angiosperms, creating conditions conducive to mutations of large phenotypic effects. Here, we explore the role of major-effect genes in the evolutionary shift from hawkmoth to bee pollination in Petunia. By modify

Thermal limits of bumblebees and honeybees are modulated by different functional traits: predictions of a mechanistic model.

Local weather conditions are expected to have species specific effects on the activity of insect pollinators. However, the relationship between changing weather patterns and pollinator activity has not been well studied. We develop a thermodynamic model for insect thorax temperature that provides a mechanistic link between local weather conditions and functional traits (e.g. body mass, flight speed) and flight activity. We show that behavioural warming and cooling adaptations are essential for temperate bumblebees and the western honeybee, and that the maximum air temperature for sustained fli

Experimental manipulation of floral display size does not affect the distribution of paternal diversity in Silene dioica.

PREMISE: Various factors, including pollinator visitation patterns and pollen carryover, govern paternal diversity and its distribution within maternal plants. Floral display size may have opposite effects on fruit- and plant-level paternal diversity, because plants with large displays may receive more pollinator visits but also more sequential probes per visit. METHODS: To investigate the effect of floral display size on the distribution of paternal diversity in Silene dioica, we genotyped and assigned paternity for 1320 seeds sampled in several fruits per plant in control and manipulated fe

Floral intra-individual variation differs between morphs and is linked to pollen deposition in self-incompatible distylous plants.

Flowers are expected to exhibit lower trait variability than vegetative traits, thereby enhancing precise pollination and reproductive success, especially in self-incompatible species that rely on cross-pollination. This is particularly important in distylous plants, which have two co-dependent flower morphs with reciprocal positioning of sexual structures (L- and S-morph). However, the influence of intra-individual floral variation on the reproductive process has often been neglected, even though this variation underlies selection for precise floral adjustment. This study investigated the int

Female-biased nectar production is associated with the Darwin's inflorescence syndrome.

Plant reproduction is influenced not only by individual flower characteristics but also by the arrangement of flowers within inflorescences. In bee-pollinated plants with protandrous flowers in vertical acropetal inflorescences - where male fertile flower structures mature before female ones and basal flowers open first (i.e., Darwin's inflorescence configuration) - male-phase flowers are positioned above female-phase flowers. This arrangement benefits from the upward foraging motion of bees, reducing pollen transfer between flowers of the same plant and increasing pollen export. Additionally,

Night and day: Contributions of diurnal and nocturnal visitors to pollen dispersal, paternity diversity, and fruit set in an early-blooming shrub, Daphne jezoensis.

PREMISE: Under uncertain pollinator visit conditions, plants often exhibit long flowering periods and generalized pollination systems. Flowering of the gynodioecious shrub Daphne jezoensis occurs in early spring in cool temperate forests. Pollination by nocturnal moths is expected, given the species' tubular-shaped flowers with sweet fragrance and nectar. However, the effectiveness of nocturnal moths under cool conditions is unknown. We evaluated the relative importance of diurnal and nocturnal visitors as pollinators in early spring. METHODS: We investigated flowering duration, flower visito

Increasing temperatures affect thoracic muscle performance in Arctic bumblebees.

Increasing temperature beyond a species' optimum is a major threat to insect biodiversity, particularly in rapidly warming regions such as the Arctic. For cold-adapted pollinators, high temperatures can disrupt physiology and ecosystem services, threatening pollinator populations and plant reproduction. In bumblebees, increased temperature disrupts the physiology of the indirect flight muscles. However, these muscles, which generate the bee's charismatic buzz, also facilitate key non-flight behaviours including communication, defence, and buzz-pollination, where temperature effects remain unex

Seed mixes of intermediate grass:forb ratio create vegetation of greater ecosystem service provision in restorations.

Restoring pollination services using forb-dense seed mixes is seen as a possible way to mitigate global pollinator decline. Research is needed on whether this management factor impacts other ecosystem services that could be influenced by greater emphasis on forbs than grasses in seed mixes. We tested grass:forb seeding ratios varying from 0:100 to 100:0 for their effects on multiple ecosystem services in a prairie restoration. We hypothesized that intermediate grass:forb seeding ratios, which have greater plant diversity, would result in greater supporting, regulating, and aesthetic services.

Influence of pollen from different species on the fruit quality of 'Hongyang' kiwifruit.

This study aimed to investigate pollen types on the fruit quality of 'Hongyang' kiwifruit, providing a scientific basis for rational pollinizer tree allocation. Using 'Hongyang' as the test material and commercial pollen as the control, pollen from 12 male plants of 2 species ( Actinidia chinesis var. Deliciosa and A. chinensis ) was used to pollinate in orchards. PCA was applied for comprehensive evaluation of the pollinated fruit. The results were as follows: (1) Male A. chinesis var. deliciosa plants had a later flowering period but more pollen than male A. chinensis plants did, and there w

Scent rhythms in twilight-flowering Passiflora pohlii: osmophore structure and terpenoid volatiles.

Some plants emit floral scents at night and are pollinated by nocturnal bees, yet their scent dynamics, composition, and emitting tissues remain poorly understood. Here, we study Passiflora pohlii, a passionflower whose blossoms open at dawn, are pollinated by crepuscular Ptiloglossa bees, and emit a strong citrus-like scent to (i) identify the chemical composition of the floral scent, (ii) quantify the rhythm of volatile emissions, and (iii) localize and characterize the ultrastructure of osmophores, to understand better their role in synchronizing pollination within a restricted temporal win

Fruit nectar or prefruit nectar? Implication of the postfloral nectar of Dendrobium chrysotoxum (Orchidaceae).

Postfloral nectar presenting on reproductive organs after pollination generally functions in plant defense to protect fruits and seeds, but the mechanisms for postfloral nectary development and nectar secretion remain largely unknown. We report the first case of postfloral nectar production in the genus Dendrobium (Orchidaceae). D. chrysotoxum produced postfloral nectar on the surface of the inferior ovary after pistil pollination. The features of postfloral nectar secretion were revealed through anatomical and histochemical approaches, transcriptome and metabolome analysis, pollination experi

Self-incompatibility involved in the level of acetylcholine and cAMP.

Elongation of pollen tubes in pistils after self-pollination of Lilium longiflorum cv. Hinomoto exhibiting strong gametophytic self-incompatibility was promoted by cAMP and also promoted by some metabolic modulators, namely, activators (forskolin and cholera toxin) of adenylate cyclase and inhibitors (3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine and pertussis) of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase. Moreover, the elongation was promoted by acetylcholine (ACh) and other choline derivatives, such as acetylthiocholine, L-alpha-phosphatidylcholine and chlorocholinechloride [CCC; (2-chloroethyl) trimethyl ammonium

Flower size evolution in the Southwest Pacific.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite accelerating interest in island evolution, the general evolutionary trajectories of island flowers remain poorly understood. In particular the island rule, which posits that small organisms become larger and large organisms become smaller after island colonization, while tested for various plant traits, has never been tested for flower size. Here, we provide the first test of the island rule for flower size for animal- and wind-pollinated flowers, and the first evidence for generalized in situ evolution of flower size on islands. METHODS: Focusing on ten archipela

Thermal carry-over: lasting impacts of early life heat stress on morphology and flight performance in solitary bee Osmia bicornis.

Climate warming is increasing the frequency and intensity of heatwaves, yet the lasting effects of short, extreme thermal events during development on pollinators remain poorly understood. Early life heat stress may generate persistent carry-over effects that influence adult morphology and performance, with consequences for fitness and ecosystem functioning. We experimentally tested how moderate and extreme developmental heatwaves affect adult morphology and flight performance in the red mason bee (Osmia bicornis), a key pollinator across its broad distribution and a model species for solitary

The ecology of polyploid establishment and exclusion, with implications for polyploid biogeography.

The relationship between polyploid formation, triploid fitness and plant reproduction has been studied for over a century, and uniparental reproduction has long been recognized to play a crucial role in polyploid establishment. Yet, we lack a synthesized framework of how polyploid establishment is expected to be influenced by different reproductive modes among angiosperms. Here, we provide new perspectives on how uniparental reproduction, pollination ecology, triploid fitness and assortative mating can impact minority cytotype exclusion (MCE) and, thereby, the likelihood of polyploid establish

Masquerading as pea plants: behavioural and morphological evidence for mimicry of multiple models in an Australian orchid.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: While there is increasing recognition of Batesian floral mimicry in plants, there are few confirmed cases where mimicry involves more than one model species. Here, we test for pollination by mimicry in Diuris (Orchidaceae), a genus hypothesized to attract pollinators via mimicry of a range of co-occurring pea plants (Faboideae). METHODS: Observations of pollinator behaviour were made for Diuris brumalis using arrays of orchid flowers. An analysis of floral traits in the co-flowering community and spectral reflectance measurements were undertaken to test if Di. brumalis an

Spatiotemporal, environmental, and behavioral predictors of Varroa mite intensity in managed honey bee apiaries.

Honey bees contribute substantially to the world economy through pollination services and honey production. In the U.S. alone, honey bee pollination is estimated to contribute at least $11 billion annually, primarily through the pollination of specialty crops. However, beekeepers lose about half of their hives every season due to disease, insecticides, and other environmental factors. Here, we explore and validate a spatiotemporal statistical model of Varroa destructor mite burden (in mites/300 bees) in managed honey bee colonies, exploring the impact of both environmental factors and beekeepe

Transcriptome Analysis Provides Insights into Water Immersion Promoting the Decocooning of Osmia excavata Alfken.

The timing of decocooning and nesting during the flowering period are crucial for the reproduction and pollination activities of Osmia excavata. In order to improve the pollination efficiency of O. excavata, it is crucial to find a way to break the cocoon quickly. Our results showed that the decocooning rates at 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 72 h after 30 min of water immersion (WI) were 28.67%, 37.33%, 37.33%, 41.33%, 44.33%, and 53.00%, respectively. The decocooning rate fold of 6 h was 14.33 compared with the control group. Transcriptome sequencing resulted in 273 differentially expressed genes (D
