Neurological manifestations of Chikungunya and Zika infections.

The epidemics of Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) infections have been considered the most important epidemiological occurrences in the Americas. The clinical picture of CHIKV infection is characterized by high fever, exanthema, myalgia, headaches, and arthralgia. Besides the typical clinical picture of CHIKV, atypical manifestations of neurological complications have been reported: meningo-encephalitis, meningoencephalo-myeloradiculitis, myeloradiculitis, myelitis, myeloneuropathy, Guillain-Barré syndrome and others. The diagnosis is based on clinical, epidemiological, and labo

Two new species and a new record of Bopyrinae (Isopoda: Bopyridae) infesting Alpheidae and Hippolytidae, with comments on the genus Bopyrina Kossmann, 1881.

Two new bopyrids, Bopyrinina articulata n. sp. and Bopyrinella asymmetrica n. sp. are described from French Polynesia, the Red Sea, and the Philippines. Bopyrinina articulata n.sp. infests Salmoneus cf. gracilipes Miya, and is distinguishable from other species of this genus by the structure of the maxilliped, pleopods and oostegite 1. Bopyrinella asymmetrica n. sp. is most similar to Bopyrinella albida Shiino, 1958, but females differ from that species because all pereomeres on the short side have round dorsolateral bosses and its pleotelson is greatly distorted. Bopyrina ocellata (Czerniavsk

Tokelau Islands Children's Study: scabies infestation in children.

Tokelau children have been examined for scabies infestation in three groups--those living in their home atolls--those living in New Zealand in 1972-73, and those living in New Zealand in 1975. There was less infestation in Tokelau than in New Zealand. In 1975 the rate of infestation in New Zealand had increased since 1972. The manifestation of the mite in children in New Zealand varied from the classical descriptions, in that the mite itself, and its burrows, were seldom found, and the skin lesions were more often seen on the body than on the wrists and hands. A treatment regime which was foun

A single mutation in the prM protein of Zika virus contributes to fetal microcephaly.

Zika virus (ZIKV) has evolved into a global health threat because of its unexpected causal link to microcephaly. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that contemporary epidemic strains have accumulated multiple substitutions from their Asian ancestor. Here we show that a single serine-to-asparagine substitution [Ser139→Asn139 (S139N)] in the viral polyprotein substantially increased ZIKV infectivity in both human and mouse neural progenitor cells (NPCs) and led to more severe microcephaly in the mouse fetus, as well as higher mortality rates in neonatal mice. Evolutionary analysis indicates that the

Lethal Zika Virus Disease Models in Young and Older Interferon α/β Receptor Knock Out Mice.

The common small animal disease models for Zika virus (ZIKV) are mice lacking the interferon responses, but infection of interferon receptor α/β knock out (IFNAR-/-) mice is not uniformly lethal particularly in older animals. Here we sought to advance this model in regard to lethality for future countermeasure efficacy testing against more recent ZIKV strains from the Asian lineage, preferably the American sublineage. We first infected IFNAR-/- mice subcutaneously with the contemporary ZIKV-Paraiba strain resulting in predominantly neurological disease with ~50% lethality. Infection with ZIKV-

A human antibody against Zika virus crosslinks the E protein to prevent infection.

The recent Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic has been linked to unusual and severe clinical manifestations including microcephaly in fetuses of infected pregnant women and Guillian-Barré syndrome in adults. Neutralizing antibodies present a possible therapeutic approach to prevent and control ZIKV infection. Here we present a 6.2 Å resolution three-dimensional cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM) structure of an infectious ZIKV (strain H/PF/2013, French Polynesia) in complex with the Fab fragment of a highly therapeutic and neutralizing human monoclonal antibody, ZIKV-117. The antibody had been shown to

Zika Virus Diseases - The New Face of an Ancient Enemy as Global Public Health Emergency (2016): Brief Review and Recent Updates.

Zika virus (ZIKV) disease is caused by a virus transmitted by Aedes mosquito. It presents as flu-like symptoms lasting for 5-7 days and shows potential association with neurological and autoimmune complications such as congenital microcephaly and adult paralysis disorder, Guillain-Barré syndrome. Treatment measures are conservative as the disease is self-limiting. ZIKV earlier affected several tropical regions of Africa and Asia from 1951 to 2006. Subsequently, it moved out from these regions to land as outbreaks in Yap Island, French Polynesia, South America, and most recently in Brazil. The

Ciguatera fish poisoning and fisheries development in the South Pacific Region.

Ciguatera fish poisoning represents an impediment to the development of fisheries based on shallow water reef fish stocks and to the food security of islands where agriculture is limited. Although fisheries development initiatives in the past 20 years in the Pacific have focused on the development of deep slope fisheries and fisheries for large pelagics such as tuna, shallow reef fisheries continue to be a major animal protein source for Pacific Islanders and a source of commercial revenue for fishermen. Statistics on ciguatera outbreaks in the Pacific are limited to local databases in Hawaii

Ancient genomes reveal distinct human dispersals and social stratification in the settlement history of western Remote Oceania.

The settlement of western Remote Oceania involved interactions among deeply divergent populations. Initial settlement ∼3,000 years ago by Lapita-associated, Southeast Asian-related groups was followed by Papuan-related expansions and later sea voyages from Polynesia. We present genome-wide data spanning the past three millennia from the eastern Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Tonga. We find that the Papuan-related expansion proceeded at a slower pace than the earlier Lapita-associated expansion and reached Fiji through at least two distinct human dispersals, centuries earlier than previous

Three new species of abdominal shrimp parasites (Crustacea: Isopoda: Bopyridae: Hemiarthrinae) from the Indo-West Pacific.

Three new species of the parasitic isopod subfamily Hemiarthrinae Markham, 1972 are described. Allodiplophryxus unilateralis n. sp. is described from Western Australia, infesting the palaemonid shrimp Jocaste lucina (Nobili, 1901), and females differ from the only other species in the genus in possessing six pleomeres, an asymmetrical first oostegite and pleopods restricted to the short side of the body. Loki athanus n. sp. is described from Madagascar, infesting the alpheid shrimp Athanas parvus de Man, 1910, and females differ from the only other species in the genus in possessing well-devel

Zika Virus Potentiates the Development of Neurological Defects and Microcephaly: Challenges and Control Strategies.

Since the beginning of the Zika Virus (ZIKV) epidemic, thousands of cases presenting ZIKV symptoms were recorded in Brazil, Colombia (South America), French Polynesia and other countries of Central and North America. In Brazil, during ZIKV outbreak thousands of microcephaly cases occurred that caused a state of urgency among scientists and researchers to confirm the suspected association between ZIKV infection and microcephaly. In this review article we comprehensively studied scientific literature to analyze ZIKV relationship with microcephaly, recent experimental studies, challenge and short

Understanding the Pathogenesis of Zika Virus Infection Using Animal Models.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a member of Flaviviridae family that has emerged as a pathogen of significant public health importance. The rapid expansion of ZIKV in the South and Central America has recently gained medical attention emphasizing the capacity of ZIKV to spread to non-endemic regions. ZIKV infection during pregnancy has been demonstrated to cause microcephaly and other fetal developmental abnormalities. An increased incidence of Guillain-Barre syndrome, an immune mediated neuropathy of the peripheral nervous system, has also been reported in ZIKV-infected patients in French Polynesia and

Cluster of eosinophilic meningitis attributable to Angiostrongylus cantonensis infection in French policemen troop returning from the Pacific Islands.

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of eosinophilic meningitis are reported rarely, even in regions of endemic infestation with the roundworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis, such as the Pacific Basin. We report a cluster of eosinophilic meningitis presumably attributable to A. cantonensis among French policemen returning from French Polynesia. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study among French policemen who had stayed in Tahiti was conducted using a clinical definition of eosinophilic meningitis that included severe headache within 30 days after return and eosinophilia, and who consumed locally exotic ethnic

Cumulative mortality rates in Aedes polynesiensis after feeding on polynesian Wuchereria bancrofti carriers treated with single doses of ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine and placebo.

During a therapeutic trial, batches of 672 to 1979 laboratory-bred Aedes polynesiensis, the mosquito vector of lymphatic filariasis in French Polynesia, were fed on Wuchereria bancrofti carriers one, three and six months after they had been treated with either single doses of ivermectin at 100 mcg/kg, diethylcarbamazine (DEC) at 3 and 6 mg/kg or placebo. High mortality rates were observed during the 15-day period following the blood-meal in mosquitoes fed on carriers treated with microfilaricidal drugs and were significantly higher in mosquitoes fed on carriers treated with ivermectin than in

ZIKA--How fast does this virus mutate?

The World Health Organization has declared the present Zika virus epidemic to be a 'Public Health Emergency of International Concern'. The virus appears to have spread from Thailand to French Polynesia in 2013, and has since infected over a million people in the countries of South and Central America. In most cases the infection is mild and transient, but the virus does appear to be strongly neurotropic and the presumptive cause of both birth defects in fetuses and Guillain-Barré syndrome in some adults. In this paper, the techniques and utilities developed in the study of mitochondrial DNA we

Zika virus infection and once again the risk from other neglected diseases.

Since the first cases of Zika were identified and reported in Brazil, the magnitude and consequences of the outbreak in the Americas have increased tremendously, leading the World Health Organization to consider Zika and its link with clusters of microcephaly a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Only a previous large outbreak in French Polynesia was known and no neurological anomalies have been reported. Differences in African and Asian lineage and differences in genetic evolution of the Zika virus may possibly provide an explanation for the development of the recent outbreaks a

The demise of the American Indios.

This symposium takes as its point of departure two books by Massimo Livi Bacci, Conquest and El Dorado in the Marshes, published in English in 2008 and 2010. Livi Bacci assesses widely varying estimates of the demographic dimensions of the collapse of the Native populations following their contact with Europeans and elucidates the proximate causes of that catastrophe. Drawing on models that combine production potential with demography, environment, and technology, Shripad Tuljapurkar discusses analogous historical experiences of the populations of Polynesia and the social transformation they e
