Diagnostic accuracy of serological diagnosis of hepatitis C and B using dried blood spot samples (DBS): two systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

BACKGROUND: Dried blood spots (DBS) are a convenient tool to enable diagnostic testing for viral diseases due to transport, handling and logistical advantages over conventional venous blood sampling. A better understanding of the performance of serological testing for hepatitis C (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) from DBS is important to enable more widespread use of this sampling approach in resource limited settings, and to inform the 2017 World Health Organization (WHO) guidance on testing for HBV/HCV. METHODS: We conducted two systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the diagnostic accurac

Factors associated with HIV testing among people who inject drugs: a meta-analysis.

HIV testing is the first step to early identification, treatment and management of HIV infection among people involved in high-risk behaviors specifically drug injection. Achieving declines in morbidity and mortality associated with HIV and reducing onward HIV transmission are key to testing and treatment. Evaluating the frequency of HIV testing among people who inject drugs (PWID) provides information that helps to identify missed opportunities to improve the efficacy of testing. This meta-analysis aimed to determine the association between HIV testing and risk taking behaviors among PWID. Tw

Pooled Sampling Technique to Improve the Monitoring of Medication Use in the Racehorse Industry.

All anti-doping programmes face financial constraints and monitoring trends in medication use or abuse in a population of racehorses can be difficult and expensive. Obtaining biological samples is the primary method of anti-doping control in individual horses or stables of horses but can be invasive and expensive. Another important practice of anti-doping control has been the confiscation of used and filled syringes by regulators for individual forensic analysis. Pooled samples testing involves the testing of multiple individual samples together as one composite sample. This pooled sample appr

Direct oral anticoagulant interference and removal in the factor VIII inhibitor assay.

BACKGROUND: Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) interfere with clot-based assays, including factor (F)VIII testing and the Nijmegen-Bethesda assay, potentially leading to false-positive results for FVIII inhibitors. Misinterpretation of these results carries serious clinical consequences. Activated charcoal-based products, such as DOAC Remove, may restore assay accuracy, but data supporting their use in FVIII inhibitor assays are limited. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aim to determine DOAC interference in FVIII inhibitor testing and evaluate effectivity of DOAC removal to restore assay reliabi

Reexamining the Minimum Sweat Rate Requirement for Sweat Chloride Testing.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines for sweat chloride testing endorse a minimum sweat rate for reporting results. Bilateral sweat collection is recommended, but if both sites fail to meet the minimum rate (quantity not sufficient, QNS), the test should be repeated. In this study, we examine the correlation between sweat rate and sweat chloride concentration ([Cl-]), assess the accuracy of specimens collected at suboptimal rates, and investigate the use of pooled bilateral specimens for chloride measurement. METHODS: Pearson correlation was employed to analyze the relationship between sweat rate and chlor

Sample pooling: burden or solution?

BACKGROUND: Pool-testing strategies combine samples from multiple people and test them as a group. A pool-testing approach may shorten the screening time and increase the test rate during times of limited test availability and inadequate reporting speed. Pool testing has been effectively used for a wide variety of infectious disease screening settings. Historically, it originated from serological testing in syphilis. During the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, pool testing is considered across the globe to inform opening strategies and to monitor infection rates after the

Inter-rater variability in patch test readings and final interpretation using store-forward teledermatology.

BACKGROUND: Data regarding teledermatology for patch testing are limited. OBJECTIVES: Compare patch test readings and final interpretation by two in-person dermatologists (IPDs) with eight teledermatologists (TDs). METHODS: Patch tested patients had photographs taken of 70 screening series of allergens at 48 hours and second readings. Eight TDs reviewed photos and graded reactions (negative, irritant, doubtful, +, ++, +++) at 48 hours and second readings; in addition, they coded a final interpretation (allergic, indeterminant, irritant, negative) for each reaction. TDs rated overall image qu

Cytomorphologic Findings Associated With High-Risk HPV Categories in PAP Smears.

BACKGROUND: High-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) is a well-established etiological agent in the development of cervical cancer. As molecular HPV testing becomes increasingly integrated into cervical cancer screening protocols, the correlation between cytomorphologic features and specific hrHPV types warrants further investigation. This study aimed to assess the predictive value of cytological features in cases with concurrent positive PAP smear results and detection of a single hrHPV category (HPV16, HPV18/45, or other pooled hrHPV types). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study,

HIV testing and engagement with the HIV treatment cascade among men who have sex with men in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: HIV disproportionately affects gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in Africa, where many countries criminalise same-sex behaviour. We assessed changes in the engagement of African MSM with HIV testing and treatment cascade stages over time, and the effect of anti-LGBT legislation and stigma. METHODS: We systematically searched Embase, Global Health, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science for peer-reviewed cross-sectional or longitudinal studies recruiting at least ten MSM, published from Jan 1, 1980, to Oct 10, 2018. We extracted or derived estimates of HIV testi
