AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Cataract surgery in diabetic individuals worsens pre-existing retinopathy and triggers the development of diabetic ocular complications, although the underlying cellular and molecular pathophysiology remains elusive. We hypothesise that lens surgery may exaggerate pre-existing retinal inflammation in diabetes, which may accelerate neurovascular degeneration in diabetic eyes.
METHODS: Male heterozygous Ins2Akita mice (3 months of age) and C57BL/6 J age-matched siblings received either lens capsulotomy (to mimic human cataract surgery) or corneal incision (sham surgery) in the

UNLABELLED: We describe a combined pars plana-limbal approach using a 25-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy system for removal of congenital cataracts in a 5-month-old boy. The operated eye had anterior capsulotomy, lensectomy, posterior capsulotomy, and anterior vitrectomy through a pars plana transconjunctival incision created with a 25-gauge trocar. A limbal port incision was used to introduce an infusion micro cannula to maintain the anterior chamber. Incisions did not require suture closure. Following the procedure, inflammation was mild, the pupil was circular and centric, and

Observations of 45 procedures in 35 patients before and after cataract surgery suggest, that the application of Nd-YAG laser is an effective and safe method of treatment. The most frequent procedures were posterior capsulotomy, iridotomy, vitreotomy, membranotomy, anterior and posterior synechotomy and decission of secondary cataract. Possible complications include intraocular pressure elevations, damage of artificial lenses and hemorrhages from iris vessels.

Acute corneal endothelial changes following Nd:YAG laser application were evaluated in two series of rabbits. The first series underwent anterior capsulotomy, while the second series received laser applications at calculated distances ranging from 0.0 mm to 1.8 mm posterior to the endothelium. The rabbits were killed 24 hours after treatment and the endothelium evaluated with scanning electron microscopy. None of the eyes undergoing anterior capsulotomy showed endothelial damage, but the endothelium was focally denuded when laser shots were applied within 1.0 mm of it, and Descemet's membrane

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Complicated Cataract is frequently associated with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). This retinopathy is a great cause of visual impairment, and cataract surgery may resolve partially the situation and restore sight. Unfortunately, in this case there is a very high incidence of Posterior Capsule Opacity (PCO) ranging in several studies a percentage of 100% at six months. Our goal was to evaluate whether the high incidence of PCO is associated to specific type of Intraocular Lens (IOL) biomaterials.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This observational retrospective study deals with 75 eyes o

PURPOSE: To report the postoperative outcomes of cataract surgery in microphthalmic eyes of infants.
METHODS: This prospective observational study was carried out on 20 infants with microphthalmos with visually significant cataract. Microphthalmos was defined as axial length of the globe 16.50 mm or less. We excluded eyes with ocular trauma, inflammation, posterior hyperplastic primary vitreous or a tractional retinal detachment, aniridia, or chorioretinal coloboma. All the infants enrolled in this study underwent phacoaspiration with primary posterior capsulotomy, anterior vitrectomy, and pe

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent advances in the surgical management of dense white cataracts, focusing on preoperative assessment, biometry, capsulotomy techniques, phacoemulsification systems, and surgical outcomes.
RECENT FINDINGS: Swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) biometers now achieve nearly universal axial length measurements even in dense lenses, improving refractive predictability. Anterior segment OCT and Scheimpflug imaging facilitate detection of intralenticular fluid pockets and capsular thinning, guiding decompression strategies to prevent anterior capsule tea

The paper presents an analysis of the complications accompanying surgical treatment of congenital club feet. In the year 1966-1993 178 feet in 149 patients aged ranging from 5 to 140 months (mean age 17.5 months. In 57 cases a posterior capsulotomy with lengthening of the Achilles tendon was performed, in 121 cases a total sub-talar release was performed. Complications wee classified as intra-operative and early and late post-operative. A total of 85 complications in 44 patients were observed, which amount to 44.7% of the cases. In 16 cases intra-operative complications were a result of techni

A technique is described for implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens during keratoplasty for bullous keratopathy when a large capsulotomy and vitreous prolapse are present. Seven cases of pseudophakic or aphakic bullous keratopathy with anterior chamber, iris-fixated, or no intraocular lens in place are reported. A completely intact posterior capsule is not necessary to support safely a sulcus-fixated posterior chamber lens. Anterior segment reconstruction, careful removal of existing intraocular lenses (except a posterior chamber lens), vitrectomy through the ruptured posterior c

The paper reports a retrospective study performed between January 1996 and January 1999 which comprised 423 patients who underwent eye cataract surgery. Vitreoretinal complications (retinal detachment, cystoid macular edema, choroidal detachment, endophthalmitis, luxation of the lens into the vitreous body) were related to age, sex, other general and local diseases and surgical complications, like disruption of the posterior capsule. The study presents also vitreoretinal complications after Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy. The outcomes of the study show that 18 cases (4.25%) had retinal det

We describe a modified surgical technique of anterior capsulotomy and phacoemulsification for use in hypermature cataracts. Surgical steps included inferior linear capsulotomy with aspiration of milky cortex, inflation of the capsular sac with viscoelastic, a reverse triangular anterior capsulotomy with Vannas scissors, and in-the-bag bimanual sculpting of the nucleus. An oval 5 mm x 6 mm posterior chamber intraocular lens was used with single horizontal or no-stitch wound closure. The technique was used successfully in 20 cases of hypermature cataract. The mean time required to perform phacoe
