Fiber connections of the presumed auditory portion of the semicircular torus or the central nucleus (TSc) as well as other central and peripheral auditory structures were studied by tract-tracing methods in carp and goldfish. Major ascending projections to the TSc originated from the descending octaval nucleus (DO) and medullary secondary octaval population (SO). Toropetal neurons of the DO were within the saccular terminal zone. A small number of toropetal DO neurons might receive inputs from other inner ear and lateral line endorgans as well. Fibers from the DO terminated in a deep zone of t

Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) patients show deficient respiratory and cardiac responses to hypoxia and hypercapnia, despite apparently intact arousal responses to hypercapnia and adequate respiratory motor mechanisms, thus providing a model to evaluate functioning of particular brain mechanisms underlying breathing. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to assess blood oxygen level-dependent signals, corrected for global signal changes, and evaluated them with cluster and volume-of-interest procedures, during a baseline and 2-min hypoxic (15% O(2), 85% N(2)) challe

Retinal projections in the house musk shrew (Suncus murinus) were determined by the anterograde transport of wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP). Unilateral injection of WGA-HRP into the vitreous body resulted in the terminal labeling of the optic projections in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCH), the ventral (CGLv) and dorsal (CGLd) lateral geniculate nuclei, the intergeniculate leaflet (IGL), the pretectum, the superficial layers of the superior colliculus (CS), and the dorsal terminal nucleus (DTN) of the accessory optic system (AOS). Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic psychiatric illness associated with altered function in cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuits. In this pilot study, we examined differential RNA expression in the thalamus using postmortem human brain tissue samples from 11 subjects with OCD and 10 unaffected subjects. We individually dissected the mediodorsal magnocellular, mediodorsal parvocellular, and ventral anterior nuclei, which participate in orbitofrontal and anterior cingulate CSTC circuits most frequently associated with OCD, and the posterior ventrolateral nucleus, which

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is a multifaceted region of cortex, contributing to several cognitive processes, including sensorimotor integration and spatial navigation. Although recent years have seen a considerable rise in the use of rodents, particularly mice, to investigate PPC and related networks, a coherent anatomical definition of PPC in the mouse is still lacking. To address this, we delineated the mouse PPC, using cyto- and chemoarchitectural markers from Nissl-, parvalbumin-and muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M2-staining. Additionally, we performed bilateral triple anterogra

Persistent olfactory dysfunction after SARS-CoV-2 infection is common, yet its central neural profile remains poorly defined. We combined ultra-high-field 7 Tesla resting-state functional MRI with surface-based cortical morphometry to characterise olfactory-network organisation and cortical structure in long-term post-COVID dysosmia. Thirty adults (14 with persistent dysosmia; 16 normosmic controls) completed psychophysical olfactory testing and 7 Tesla imaging. Connectivity analyses across 56 olfaction-related regions revealed a coherent pattern centred on insular, orbitofrontal and thalamic

Neuromodulation (neurostimulation) is a relatively new and rapidly growing treatment for refractory epilepsy. Three varieties are approved in the US: vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), deep brain stimulation (DBS) and responsive neurostimulation (RNS). This article reviews thalamic DBS for epilepsy. Among many thalamic sub-nuclei, DBS for epilepsy has been targeted to the anterior nucleus (ANT), centromedian nucleus (CM), dorsomedial nucleus (DM) and pulvinar (PULV). Only ANT is FDA-approved, based upon a controlled clinical trial. Bilateral stimulation of ANT reduced seizures by 40.5% at three mo

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation for essential arm tremor is often complicated by dysarthria and persistent voice tremor.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship of stimulation location to speech outcomes following bilateral thalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS) for essential tremor (ET).
METHODS: Eighteen patients undergoing bilateral DBS for ET were prospectively studied. Speech pathologists grouped patients by final speech outcome (normal speech, voice tremor, or dysarthria). Locations of the active leads were calculated by normalizing the segmented thalamic volumes to those in the Mor

The organization of axonal projections from the oval and fusiform nuclei of the bed nuclei of the stria terminalis (BST) was characterized with the Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin (PHAL) anterograde tracing method in adult male rats. Within the BST, the oval nucleus (BSTov) projects very densely to the fusiform nucleus (BSTfu) and also innervates the caudal anterolateral area, anterodorsal area, rhomboid nucleus, and subcommissural zone. Outside the BST, its heaviest inputs are to the caudal substantia innominata and adjacent central amygdalar nucleus, retrorubral area, and lateral parabrac

BACKGROUND: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP1R) is a G-protein-coupled receptor recognized for its essential role in metabolic homeostasis and insulin secretion. Emerging evidence suggests that central GLP-1 signaling also modulates sensory information processing and cognitive functions. The thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) serves as a critical inhibitory hub that filters and prioritizes sensory transmission between the thalamus and the cerebral cortex. We have identified a distinct population of GLP1R-expressing neurons distributed within the TRN; however, their long-range structural con

As one of the thalamic midline nuclei, the thalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVT) is considered to be an important signal integration site for many descending and ascending pathways that modulate a variety of behaviors, including feeding, emotions, and drug-seeking. A recent study has demonstrated that the PVT is implicated in the acute visceral pain response, but it is unclear whether the PVT plays a critical role in the central processing of chronic pain. Here, we report that the neurons in the posterior portion of the PVT (pPVT) and their downstream pathway are involved in descending nocice

In the bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana), the process of metamorphosis culminates in the appearance of new visual and visuomotor behaviors reflective of the emergence of binocular vision and visually-guided prey capture behaviors as the animal transitions to life on land. Using several different neuroanatomical tracers, we examined the substrates that may underlie these behavioral changes by tracing the afferent and efferent connectivity of the midbrain optic tectum across metamorphic development. Intratectal, tectotoral, tectotegmental, tectobulbar, and tecto-thalamic tracts exhibit similar traject

The surgical treatment of the thalamic lesions is one of the most technically challenging interventions because of their deep-seated location and the proximity of the surrounding vital neurovascular structures: thalamic nuclei, limbic system components, visual and oculomotricity pathways, deep cerebral veins, and posterior cerebral artery branches.1 Traditional microsurgical approaches for these lesions usually require large open craniotomies and further retraction or resection of neural tissue to facilitate better visualization, associating significant postoperative morbidity or even mortalit

INTRODUCTION: Déjerine-Roussy syndrome, or thalamic syndrome, is characterised by transient mild hemiparesis, hemichoreoathetosis, hemihypoesthesia, hyperalgesia, allodynia and hemiataxia with astereognosia that varies in intensity, and it appears in the presence of lesions in the posterior nuclei of the thalamus. It can be produced by strategic cerebral infarction, reported in elderly patients with vascular risk factors. Patent foramen ovale has been suggested as a risk factor for ischaemic stroke in young people, especially when associated to aneurysm of the auricular septum and above all to

In reptiles, two taxa, lepidosaurs and archosaurs, have ears with thin tympanic membranes that permit sensitive hearing of high-frequency sounds in air. The organization of their central auditory systems may reflect this increased sensitivity to sound. To understand auditory processing in lepidosaurs further, we used tract tracing techniques to examine the organization and connections of the lemniscal and midbrain auditory nuclei in the Tokay gecko. The nuclei of the lateral lemniscus (LLD) consist of anterior (LLDa), medial (LLDm), and posterior (LLDp) subdivisions and receive ascending proje

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor (ET) has limited pharmacological treatments, and deep brain stimulation (DBS) has emerged as an effective surgical intervention. DBS, although effective and safe, is inherently invasive. Patients at high risk for surgery or who experience complications with DBS are left with limited treatments for medically refractory ET. Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a less invasive and effective option for these patients.
OBSERVATIONS: A 67-year-old right-handed male with a 37-year history of refractory ET underwent DBS of the bilateral ventral interme

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) functions as the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter within the central nervous system (CNS) of vertebrates. In this study, we examined the distribution pattern of GABA-immunoreactive (GABA-ir) cells and fibres in the CNS of the viviparous teleost Poecilia sphenops using immunofluorescence method. GABA immunoreactivity was seen in the glomerular, mitral, and granular layers of the olfactory bulbs, as well as in most parts of the dorsal and ventral telencephalon. The preoptic area consisted of a small cluster of GABA-ir cells, whereas extensively labelled GABA-ir

The interstitial nucleus of the posterior limb of the anterior commissure is, like the striatum, very rich in tyrosine hydroxylase and acetylcholinesterase, but on the basis of most other neurochemical criteria displays features that are typical of the extended amygdala (Alheid, de Olmos and Beltramino, 1995). Its afferent connections were examined in the rat with retrograde (cholera toxin B subunit) and anterograde (Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin) tracers and compared to those of the neighboring amygdalostriatal transition area and central amygdaloid nucleus. Deposits of cholera toxin B s

This chapter summarizes current knowledge on the structural segregation of the parietal lobe based on cyto-, myelo-, and receptorarchitectonic studies, as well as the connectivity of this brain region with other cortical and subcortical structures. The anterior part of the human parietal cortex comprises the somatosensory areas 3a, 3b, 1, and 2, whereas the posterior part contains seven multimodal areas in both the superior and inferior parietal lobules. Available cytoarchitectonic maps of the human intraparietal sulcus do not provide a complete picture yet. Myelo- and receptorarchitectonic an

Bilateral damage in the posterior cingulate region can induce anterograde amnesia. Identifying the potential contributions of the various areas within this heterogeneous region has, however, largely depended on animal research. Within the posterior cingulate region the retrosplenial cortex stands out by virtue of its dense interconnections with the hippocampal formation and anterior thalamic nuclei. Consistent with these connections is the finding from lesion studies in animals that the retrosplenial cortex is necessary for navigation and spatial learning, and that these functions occur in clo
