Divergent effects of dietary chloride restriction on aldosterone biosynthesis and the renin-angiotensin system in rats.

The effects of dietary chloride restriction - alone or combined with sodium and potassium restriction - on aldosterone biosynthesis and the renin-angiotensin system were studied in rats. Treatment with a chloride-deficient diet led to a temporary decrease in the capsular adrenal conversions of corticosterone to 18-hydroxycorticosterone and aldosterone (manifest after 2 weeks but not longer apparent after 3 weeks), which was accompanied by a progressive rise in plasma renin activity and a moderate fall in plasma potassium. Combined restriction of sodium, potassium and chloride elicited a decrea

Periodic paralysis and the sodium-potassium pump.

Analysis of the pathophysiology of hypokalemic paralysis, as it occurs in barium poisoning, chronic potassium deficiency, and thyrotoxicosis, suggests that these disorders may have a similar mechanism. An increased ratio of muscle sodium permeability to potassium permeability reduces the ionic diffusion potential, while the resting membrane potential is sustained by an increase of Na-K pump electrogenesis. The result is that potassium entry (the sum of active and passive influx) exceeds potassium efflux; this causes a large shift of extracellular potassium into muscle until the Na-K pump turns

The pathophysiology of potassium and magnesium disturbances. A cardiac perspective.

Sodium (Na+) and calcium (Ca++) ions are both involved in the activation of cardiac muscle cells. Na+ ions initially depolarise the cell, and the cell-inward flux of Ca++ ions maintains the plateau phase of the action potential. Ca++ ions trigger the release of more Ca++ ions from the sarcoplasmic reticulum. The free Ca++ ions inside the cell subsequently activate the formation of actomyosin complexes and initiate the contraction. Potassium (K+) and magnesium (Mg++) ions modulate the actions of Na+ and Ca++. Hyperkalaemia lowers the membrane potential, and thereby reduces excitability and cond

Copper response to rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis can be divided into two syndromes, one a potassium deficiency, the other an inappropriate copper requirement seriously affecting the elastin tissues through reduced lysyl oxidase cross linking. The malfunction in copper may arise from the steroids which regulate potassium, which reduces those steroids, and through that, increases the copper response to the needs of the immune system. It is a mechanism which may have evolved to help fight potassium wasting infections.

Effect of mineralocorticoids on the paradoxical glucose-induced hyperkalemia in nondiabetic patients with selective hypoaldosteronism.

Intravenous infusion of hypertonic glucose induced a transitory paradoxical serum potassium elevation in 3 nondiabetic patients with selective hypoaldosteronism. The abnormal serum potassium response developed in spite of a normal insulin release and was abolished by pharmacological doses of mineralocorticoids in two. It is apparent that in certain patients with aldosterone deficiency normal insulin production alone cannot reverse completely the hyperosmolality-induced transfer of potassium from the intracellular to the extracellular fluid.

Does high plant feed magnesium and potassium protect healthy ruminants from atherosclerosis? A review.

The literature data were surveyed to clarify the role of magnesium and potassium in the development of atherosclerosis (AS) in cows and the findings were compared with human data. Special attention was paid to the eastern Finland where AS is very common in humans and absent in the cattle. A hypothesis is proposed that high magnesium and potassium intakes at plant feeding protect from severe AS processes at least in cows in the absence of chronic infections. In about 1500 necropsies in calves and cows on plant feeding, neither antemortem clinical AS symptoms nor postmortal macroscopical AS were

The renal lesions of electrolyte imbalance. III. The effect of acute chloride depletion and alkalosis on the renal cortex.

Acute chloride depletion in rats is associated with the occurrence of an extensive cell damage in the mid-portion of the proximal convolutions which is followed by an excessive hyperplastic reaction of the renal epithelium; no other significant lesions were found by microdissection in either the tubules of the nephrons or the collecting system. Potassium deficiency is not essential to the development of this lesion but does increase the severity of the reaction. As in the case of potassium deficiency, chloride depletion predisposes to or exaggerates the structural alterations that accompany ex

Glycine max (L.) Merr. (Soybean) metabolome responses to potassium availability.

Potassium (K+) has vital physiological and metabolic functions in plants and its availability can impact tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress conditions. Limited studies have investigated the effect of K+ fertilization on soybean metabolism. Using integrated omics, ionomics and metabolomics, we investigated the field-grown Glycine max (soybean) response, after four K+ soil fertilization rates. Soybean leaf and pod tissue (valves and immature seeds) extracts were analysed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-HRMS) and inductively couple

Gossypol-hypokalaemia interrelationships.

Around 1% of 8806 volunteers taking gossypol as a male contraceptive had hypokalaemic paralysis and more had simple hypokalaemia, the direct cause being renal potassium loss. In gossypol takers not showing hypokalaemia, serum potassium levels were within the normal range but were significantly lower than levels in controls. In the majority of patients suffering from gossypol-induced hypokalaemia, recovery was prompt and complete following potassium repletion, but in some men there were recurrent attacks of hypokalaemia during a period of several months to years after cessation of gossypol trea

Effects of diuretics on the renal handling of magnesium.

Diuretic-induced magnesium losses may contribute significantly to magnesium deficiency. Loop diuretics especially cause major losses of urinary magnesium. Our initial experiments in saline-loaded rats indicated that frusemide greatly increased magnesium excretion, while bendrofluazide caused no significant change and triamterene actually decreased magnesium excretion. Therefore, not all diuretics are magnesium-wasting. There is evidence that the potassium-sparing diuretic amiloride may also exert magnesium-sparing properties. In saline-loaded rats, the magnesium-sparing effect of amiloride was

The miR1118-TaCaM5-3A Module Regulates K+ Uptake and Enhances K+ Deficiency Tolerance in Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.).

Potassium (K+) deficiency significantly decreases the productivity of crops (e.g., wheat). MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are master regulators of plant responses to stress, including K+ deficiency. In our previous study, miR1118 was identified as a Triticeae-specific miRNA that is highly expressed at multiple time points after exposure to K+ deficiency; however, the regulatory roles of miR1118 and its target gene TaCaM5-3A (calmodulin-encoding gene) in K+ uptake and tolerance to K+ deficiency remained unclear. In this study, miR1118 enhances the tolerance of wheat to K+ deficiency by improving K+ uptake

Pathophysiology of intense physical conditioning in a hot climate. I. Mechanisms of potassium depletion.

Serial estimations of exchangeable (42)K showed that six volunteer subjects undergoing intensive physical conditioning in a hot climate sustained a mean deficit of 517 mEq. This deficit occurred despite a daily potassium intake of 100 mEq. Simultaneous values for lean body mass rose suggesting that potassium deficiency was not the result of catabolism. Although sweating was the major avenue by which the deficit occurred, daily excretion of potassium into the urine when each subject was maximally deficient ranged from 46 to 75 mEq and thus was inappropriately high for potassium-depleted subject

Effects of K+, Mg2+ deficiency and adrenal steroids on Na+, K(+)-pump concentration in skeletal muscle.

Animal studies have shown that deficiency of K+ is associated with a reduction in the concentration of Na+, K+ pumps in skeletal muscle, and that this reduction is closely correlated with the reduction in the muscle K+ concentration. Furthermore, animals deficient in Mg+ show a downregulation of the Na+, K(+)-pump concentration, but this seems to be secondary to the concomitant K+ deficiency, which often accompanies Mg2+ deficiency. Measurements on skeletal muscle biopsies from patients who had been in long-term treatment with diuretics showed that 55% had reduced concentrations of both K+ and

Interactions of Sulfate with Other Nutrients As Revealed by H2S Fumigation of Chinese Cabbage.

Sulfur deficiency in plants has severe impacts on both growth and nutrient composition. Fumigation with sub-lethal concentrations of H2S facilitates the supply of reduced sulfur via the leaves while sulfate is depleted from the roots. This restores growth while sulfate levels in the plant tissue remain low. In the present study this system was used to reveal interactions of sulfur with other nutrients in the plant and to ascertain whether these changes are due to the absence or presence of sulfate or rather to changes in growth and organic sulfur. There was a complex reaction of the mineral co

Results of examination of 257 patients suffering from diabetes mellitus demonstrated a reduction of sodium, potassium and magnesium content in their plasma. Erythrocytes also displayed a reduction of potassium and magnesium, and some increase of sodium content. Reduction of electrolyte level in the plasma and erythrocytes was more pronounced in winter; the erythrocyte sodium content was less in summer than in winter. The 24-hour sodium potassium and magnesium excretion is increased, during winter in particular. The efficacy of treatment of diabetic patients with panangin and potassium chloride
