INTRODUCTION: Prebiotics are widely used in nutritional supplements, with water-soluble dietary fibers used as thickeners for patients with swallowing difficulties. Interactions between thickeners and medications have been reported; however, the effects of thickeners on warfarin remain unclear. Here, we examined the interaction between warfarin and thickeners through clinical and basic research studies.
METHODS: The clinical research study evaluated the effects of combining warfarin and thickeners on blood coagulation, while the basic research study measured the impact of different prebiotics

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes current research on the effects of probiotics and prebiotics during pregnancy and lactation.
RECENT FINDINGS: During pregnancy and lactation, various changes occur in maternal hormone levels and physiological processes to ensure the most favorable intrauterine environment. These changes may vary depending on factors such as maternal nutritional status and mode of delivery, and they can also lead to alterations in the maternal gut microbiota, breast milk microbiota, and neonatal gut microbiota. In this context, probiotic and prebiotic supplementation i

Huntington's disease (HD) is a currently incurable neurodegenerative disorder characterised by psychiatric, cognitive and motor deficits, as well as peripheral manifestations, including gastrointestinal (GI) and immunological impairments. The R6/1 mouse model of HD, expressing a mutant human huntingtin transgene, exhibits excellent construct and face validity. Evidence of gut dysbiosis has been reported in clinical and preclinical HD and is strongly associated with disease symptoms, including cognitive and behavioural outcomes. Recently, high dietary fibre was shown to rescue cognitive and aff

Lactose intolerance (LI) is a widespread health issue affecting almost 70% of the world population. This study evaluates the potential prebiotic benefits of konjac glucomannan (KGM) and konjac oligogalactomannan (KOGM) in improving LI. Colonic fermentation results indicate that lactase groups of healthy subjects showed lower pH, higher lactic acid content, and lactase activity in fermentation broth compared with LI subjects. Total short-chain fatty acid (SCFAs) content reached 1.71 mmol/L in healthy subjects, whereas it was 1.49 mmol/L in LI subjects. In vivo studies demonstrated that KGM and

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now considered the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. NAFLD is related to changes in lipid metabolism and is characterized by the increase or accumulation of fat in hepatocytes that may progress to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which leads to the appearance of inflammatory processes. Treatment consists of changes in diet, physical activity, and weight control; however, these disorders represent a health problem and require the development of novel alternatives to treatment and prevention. NAFLD/NASH are strongly associated with othe

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is believed to arise from an imbalance between the intestinal microbiota and mucosal immunity, leading to excessive intestinal inflammation. Modulating the gut microbial community through dietary components presents a valuable strategy in aiding the treatment of UC. In this study, esters formed by binding of well-known prebiotics, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), with short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) via both enzymatic and chemical methods were evaluated for their impact on the gut microbiota of UC patients. An in vitro human colonic fermentation model was employed to monit

Air pollution exposure is a public health emergency, which attributes globally to an estimated seven million deaths on a yearly basis We are all exposed to air pollutants, varying from ambient air pollution hanging over cities to dust inside the home. It is a mixture of airborne particulate matter and gases that can be subdivided into three categories based on particle diameter. The smallest category called PM0.1 is the most abundant. A fraction of the particles included in this category might enter the blood stream spreading to other parts of the body. As air pollutants can enter the body via

The prebiotics and probiotics market is constantly growing due to the positive effects of its consumption on human health, which extends beyond the digestive system. In addition, the synbiotic products market is also expanding due to the synergistic effects between pre- and probiotics that provide additional benefits to consumers. Pre- and probiotics are being evaluated for their effectiveness to treat and prevent infectious diseases in other parts of the human body where microbial communities exist. This review examines the scientific data related to the effects of pre- and probiotics on the

The human large intestine harbors a complex microbiota containing many hundreds of different bacterial species. Although structure/function relationships between different components of the microbiota are unclear, this complex multicellular entity plays an important role in maintaining homeostasis in the body. Many of the physiologic properties of the microbiota can be attributed to fermentation and the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), particularly acetate, propionate, and butyrate. In healthy people, fermentation processes are largely controlled by the amounts and different type

Metabolic inflammation is an inflammation event that occurs during fattening driven by diet-induced changes to the microbiota leading to increased permeability of the gut barrier and infiltration of bacterial products. This triggers inflammation in the gut and distant tissues (i.e., white adipose [WAT]). We have previously shown that 13-lined ground squirrels (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus), obligate hibernators, develop metabolic inflammation during their fattening season and that this inflammation can be attenuated by the gut-specific anti-inflammatory drug mesalazine. Here, we manipulated the

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is a condition marked by an increased proliferation of bacteria in the small intestine. This leads to a range of GI symptoms and nutritional issues. This article examines the preventive and therapeutic roles of nutrition, prebiotics, probiotics, and prokinetics in managing SIBO. Finding the prevalence of SIBO in the general population is challenging due to challenges in diagnosis and different diagnostic methods. Nevertheless, SIBO has been linked to several clinical conditions, such as obesity, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory

This review aims to analyze the recent studies about prebiotics and precision biotics, as alternatives to animal growth promoters. These substances improve intestinal health, growth performance and poultry environmental impact. Prebiotics are insoluble fibers, that have no nutritive value, but they promote the growth of positive bacteria, increase the nutrients absorption and modulate the immune response. Instead, precision biotics are carbohydrates with glycosidic linkages, which interact with gut bacteria metabolism, reducing the excretion of nitrogen and consequentially, the poultry environ

The intra-amniotic administration approach has been used to evaluate the effects of plant origin prebiotics on intestinal health and on brush border membrane functionality and morphology. Prebiotics are fermentable dietary fibers, which can positively affect the host by selectively stimulating the growth and activity of colon bacteria, thus improving intestinal health. The consumption of prebiotics increases digestive tract motility, which leads to hyperplasia and/or hypertrophy of intestinal cells, increasing nutrient digestive and absorptive surface area. This review collates information abo

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic non-communicable disease, with a prevalence of 25% worldwide. This pathology is a multifactorial illness, and is associated with different risks factors, including hypertension, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and obesity. Beside these predisposing features, NAFLD has been related to changes in the microbiota, which favor the disease progression. In this context, the modulation of the gut microbiota has emerged as a new therapeutic target for the prophylaxis and treatment of NAFLD. This review describes the changes in the gut microbiota assoc

Altered interactions between the gut mucosa and bacteria during HIV infection seem to contribute to chronic immune dysfunction. A deeper understanding of how nutritional interventions could ameliorate gut dysbiosis is needed. Forty-four subjects, including 12 HIV+ viremic untreated (VU) patients, 23 antiretroviral therapy-treated (ART+) virally suppressed patients (15 immunological responders and 8 non-responders) and 9 HIV- controls (HIV-), were blindly randomized to receive either prebiotics (scGOS/lcFOS/glutamine) or placebo (34/10) over 6 weeks in this pilot study. We assessed fecal microb

The emergence of biomolecules on the primordial Earth represents a pivotal scientific question for understanding the origin of life. Recent studies show that compounds containing nitrogen-oxygen bonds could serve as important feedstocks in prebiotic synthesis and intermediates in primitive metabolic pathways. Simple N-O-compounds have been identified in the interstellar medium and were likely formed from molecular nitrogen in the early Earth's atmosphere in the course of high-energy events. N-O-compounds are reactive species with rich chemistry enabling abiotic nitrogen fixation processes. Mor

Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are food ingredients that improve human health, but their degradation throughout the human small intestine is not well understood. We studied the breakdown kinetics of FOS and GOS in the intestines of seven healthy Dutch adults. Subjects were equipped with a catheter in the distal ileum or proximal colon and consumed 5 g of chicory-derived FOS (degree of polymerization (DP) DP2-10), and 5 g of GOS (DP2-6). Postprandially, intestinal content was frequently collected until 350 min and analyzed for mono-, di-, and oligosaccharides.

Products of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) reactivity are suspected to play important roles in astrochemistry and, possibly, the origin of life. The composition, chemical structure, and mechanistic details for formation of products from HCN's self-reactions have, however, proven elusive for decades. Here, we elucidate base-catalyzed reaction mechanisms for the formation of diaminomaleonitrile and polyimine in liquid HCN using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Both materials are proposed as key intermediates for driving further chemical evolution. The formation of these materials is predicted t

Prebiotics are dietary substrates which promote host health when utilized by desirable intestinal bacteria. The most commonly used prebiotics are non-digestible oligosaccharides but the prebiotic properties of other types of nutrients such as polyphenols are emerging. Here, we review recent evidence showing that amino acids (AA) could function as a novel class of prebiotics based on: (i) the modulation of gut microbiota composition, (ii) the use by selective intestinal bacteria and the transformation into bioactive metabolites and (iii) the positive impact on host health. The capacity of intes
