Patients may develop hemodynamic abnormalities after right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) repair. Re-intervention timing remains a dilemma. This study evaluates exercise capacity and RV function before and after intervention using age-related comparisons. Twenty-six patients with severe pulmonary regurgitation (PR) after initial repair scheduled for pulmonary valve replacement (PVR) were enrolled. Metabolic treadmill testing (EST) and MRI were obtained before and after surgery. EST results were compared with matched controls. Preoperative exercise time and peak oxygen consumption (VO2 max) w

Background/Objectives: The prolonged bed rest of patients after cardiac thoracic surgery is associated with many deteriorations in their lives. This study examined patients' readiness to exercise after cardiac surgery in Greece. Methods: This study employs a cross-sectional observational design. Data collection occurred from April to August 2024, and 98 patients who underwent cardiac surgery were enrolled in the study. Patient readiness was assessed via the Greek version of the "Readiness to Change Exercise Questionnaire," which contains 13 questions divided into four subscales: pre-contemplat

BACKGROUND: Although the cone repair has shown good outcome regarding valve competence, its effect on exercise performance and right ventricular remodeling are unclear.
METHODS: Between January 2010 and June 2021, 60 patients underwent a cone repair at our center. We excluded patients with previous operation (n = 6), age <5 years (n = 3), in-hospital death (n = 2), replacement before discharge (n = 1), and missing follow-up (n = 2), resulting in a study population of 46 patients. Median age was 27 years (interquartile range, 5.6-68.2 years), and 28 (61%) were female. Patients were divided bas

The perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) is a severe complication that affects millions of surgical patients each year. Homocysteine (Hcy) is known to increase the risk of developing PND in both young and elderly mice. However, whether Hcy alone can induce cognitive deficits in middle-aged mice (12-month-old), whether exercise can attenuate Hcy-induced hippocampus-related cognitive deficits after surgery through suppressing neuroinflammation, synaptic elimination, and the level of Hcy remains unknown. The present study aimed to answer these questions through testing the possibility of e

BACKGROUND: Physiological measures of heart failure are common in surgical patients, despite the absence of a diagnosis. Heart rate (HR) increases during exercise are frequently blunted in heart failure (termed chronotropic incompetence), which primarily reflects beta-adrenoreceptor dysfunction. We examined whether chronotropic incompetence was associated with myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery.
METHODS: This was a predefined analysis of an international cohort study where participants aged ≥40 yr underwent symptom-limited cardiopulmonary exercise testing before noncardiac surgery. Ch

BACKGROUND: Perioperative morbidity in gastrointestinal (GI) cancers is closely associated with reduced physical fitness and impaired nutritional status. While prehabilitation has been shown to improve outcomes in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), it is not yet standard of care and remains underexplored in other GI malignancies. This study evaluates the feasibility, safety, and preliminary effectiveness of a supervised moderate-to-high intensity exercise program combined with nutritional counseling in a cohort of GI cancer patients scheduled for surgery.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain is a common complication following breast cancer surgery, adversely influencing recovery and quality of life. Exercise-based prehabilitation, initiated before surgery to enhance physical readiness, has shown benefits in other surgical settings. However, its specific impact on postoperative pain in breast cancer patients remains unclear.
METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of exercise-based prehabilitation in reducing postoperative pain in women undergoing breast cancer surgery. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensiv

The aim of this study is to determine if surgical repair of coarctation in adults improves systemic hypertension. The charts of 23 consecutive patients (age range 13-36 years, mean 23.6+/-7) who underwent repair of aortic coarctation at the Atatürk University, Aziziye Hospital, between 1986 and 2000 were reviewed. There were 16 (70%) men and seven (30%) women. All patients had preoperative hypertension. Systolic blood pressure (BP) ranged between 150 and 200 mmHg, with a mean of 176+/-15 mmHg. Peak systolic gradient across the coarctation was 52+/-20 mmHg (range from 30 to 112 mmHg). There wer

Purpose: We investigated, in patients who underwent lung resection for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the magnitude of early limitation in functional exercise capacity and the associations with pre- and postoperative factors. Methods: Consecutive patients with preoperative clinical stage I to IIIA NSCLC who underwent lung resection were prospectively enrolled. We measured functional exercise capacity (6-minute walk distance [6MWD]) and skeletal muscle strength (handgrip [HF] and quadriceps force [QF]) within 2 days prior to surgery and on day 7 postoperatively. Results: Two hundred eighte

Radical prostatectomy is the treatment of choice in patients with localized prostate cancer. One of the surgical complications is urinary incontinence. Pelvic floor muscle exercises (PFMT) are used as the first therapeutic step. The objective of this study is to review the evidence of performing PFMT in these patients prior to surgery, for earlier recovery of continence. Four systematic reviews and meta-analyses have been carried out, as well as a prospective study, a retrospective study, a clinical trial and an observational study in favor of carrying out training before the intervention. The exercise test is performed routinely in cardiology; its main indication is the diagnosis of myocardial ischemia, evaluated along with the subject's pretest probability and cardiovascular risk level. Other criteria, such as analysis of repolarization, must be taken into consideration during the interpretation of an exercise test, to improve its predictive value. An exercise test is also indicated for many other cardiac diseases (e.g. rhythm and conduction disorders, severe asymptomatic aortic stenosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, peripheral artery disease, hypertension). Moreover, an exerc

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of vestibular schwannoma (VS) leads to acute ipsilateral vestibular loss if there is residual vestibular function before surgery. To overcome the sequelae of acute ipsilateral vestibular loss and to decrease postoperative recovery time, the concept of preemptive vestibular ablation with gentamicin and vestibular prehabilitation before surgery has been developed ("vestibular prehab").
OBJECTIVE: Studying postural stability during walking and handicap of dizziness over a 1-year follow-up period in VS patients undergoing vestibular prehab before surgical treatment

Children with neuromuscular, chronic neurologic, and chest wall diseases are at increased risk of postoperative respiratory complications including atelectasis, pneumonia, and respiratory failure with the possible need for reintubation or even tracheostomy. These complications negatively impact patient outcomes, including increased healthcare resource utilization and increased surgical mortality. In these children, the existing respiratory reserve is often inadequate to withstand the stresses brought on during anesthesia and surgery. A thorough clinical assessment and objective evaluation of p
