Health differences among Lumbee Indians using public and private sources of care.

CONTEXT: Of 2.4 million American Indians, approximately 60% are eligible to receive Indian Health Service (IHS) benefits, leaving many to seek care elsewhere. It is unknown if their quality of care, health behaviors, and health status vary by source of care, as demonstrated for other populations. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether preventive services, health behaviors, and number of health conditions vary as a function of having non-IHS public versus private physicians as sources of usual care. METHODS: 1,177 Lumbee Indians, who are ineligible to receive IHS services

Sex-Based Differences in Association Between Coverage Disruptions and Preventive Care.

Adults with part-year or year-round uninsurance are less likely to receive recommended preventive services. Sex differences in preventive care use have been documented, but it remains unclear whether sex moderates the association between insurance coverage disruptions and preventive care use. The current study analyzed data from 37,659 adults aged 18-64 in the 2019 and 2023 National Health Interview Survey. Insurance coverage over the past 12 months was categorized as continuous private, continuous public, coverage gap, or continuously uninsured. Outcomes included blood pressure and cholestero

[Role of district and local self-government in disability prevention].

Prevention of common chronic diseases in the development of temporary and/or permanent working disability is not only a significant public health problem but also a serious economic and social issue. The epidemic of traffic-related injuries, work-related injuries and, unfortunately, injuries sustained during sports and recreational activities is pretty disturbing. Article 69 of the Croatian Constitution states that all residents of Croatia have a right to healthy life. The State provides special care for disabled persons and promotes their inclusion into the society (Article 57), and each Croa

Prospective association of intimate partner violence with receipt of clinical preventive services in women of reproductive age.

BACKGROUND: Women who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) have a greater risk for adverse health outcomes, suggesting the importance of preventive services in this group. Little prior research has explored how IPV exposure impacts receipt of relevant preventive services. We assess the prospective association of IPV exposure with receiving specific preventive services. METHODS: Women in the Central Pennsylvania Women's Health Study's longitudinal cohort study (conducted 2004-2007; n = 1,420) identified past-year exposure to IPV at baseline and receipt of IPV-relevant preventive services

Analysing the effect of multidisciplinary teams to address preventive healthcare gaps in a rural teaching clinic: a quality improvement project.

Preventive care decreases the risk of illness, disease and death, yet patient adherence to preventive care is low, calculated to be around 5%, and rural residents are suspected to have even lower rates compared with urban patients. Despite continually updated guidelines and recommendations for screenings and preventive care, delivery of care to rural patients is difficult, and a deficit exists. This project aimed to use multidisciplinary teams at a teaching rural health clinic to close five preventive care gaps: lung cancer screening, colon cancer screening, Shingrix vaccination, osteoporosis

Antiretrovirals for prevention: realizing the potential. closing commentary by the executive director of UNAIDS.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART), for those who have access, has revolutionised the morbidity and mortality consequences of HIV infection. By the end of 2010, 6.6 million people living with HIV in low- and middle-income countries were receiving ART, a dramatic 20-fold increase since 2001, saving millions of lives. In addition to the impact of ART on the health of those living with HIV, recent randomised controlled trials demonstrate the additional impact of ART in reducing HIV transmission. With this double effect, ART is a game changer in the response to AIDS. With other advances over the past ye

Improving Health Equity and Outcomes for Children and Adolescents: The Role of School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs).

School-based health centers (SBHCs) provide a critical point of access to youth in low-resource communities. By providing a combination of primary care, reproductive health, mental health, vision, dental, and nutrition services, SBHCs improve the health, wellbeing, and academic achievement of the students they serve. SBHCs operate in collaboration with schools and community primary care providers to optimize the management of chronic health conditions and other health concerns that may result in suboptimal scholastic achievement and other quality of life measures.
