BACKGROUND: The minimally invasive Nuss procedure has emerged as the standard of care for correction of pectus excavatum. The site of chest wall insertion and bar shape are currently contoured on the basis of the surgeon's judgment. To optimize and individualize Nuss bar configuration, we aimed to create a virtual surgical planning workflow and 3-dimensional (3D) printed Nuss bar molds customized to each patient's defect.
METHODS: Standard thin-section chest computed tomography images were imported into the planning software, and segmentation was used to extract anatomically relevant features

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous transthoracic lung biopsy is customarily conducted under computed tomography (CT) guidance, which primarily depends on the conductors' experience and inevitably contributes to long procedural duration and radiation exposure. Novel technique facilitating lung biopsy is currently demanded.
METHODS: Based on the reconstructed anatomical information of CT scans, a three-dimensionally printed navigational template was customized to guide fine-needle aspiration (FNA). The needle insertion site and angle could be indicated by the template after proper placement according to

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of craniosynostosis has greatly evolved with improvements in both technology and understanding of the disease process. Some drawbacks remain regarding bone regeneration within the surgical bony gaps. Generally, bony gaps improve in the 12 to 24 months after surgery, but some gaps may remain for longer and cause deformity and/or require additional bony reconstruction. These considerations make tissue-engineered bone very attractive. Novel 3-dimensional printed bioresorbable mesh implants made of Polycaprolactone (PCL) can be used to fill the surgical bony def

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to validate a three-dimensional (3D) printed model to provide training for supernumerary teeth (SNTs) extraction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each of the 30 participants, grouped as experienced and without experience, conducted two identically simulated surgeries on a 3D-printed replica of human mixed dentition with a SNT. The surgery time, area of bony window and volume of removed material were measured; subsequently, responses to a five-item questionnaire were recorded. The collected data were statistically analysed.
RESULTS: The surgery time was 228.37 ± 141.53 s

Preventive orthodontics is an aspect of pediatric dentistry, which requires a unique set of skills and understanding to aid the patient's treatment and properly align teeth. The safest way to prevent future malocclusions from tooth loss is to place a space maintainer (SM), which is advocated to hold the space until the eruption of permanent teeth. SM manufacturing is a laborious process that requires ample communication with the laboratory to properly complete and provide the patient with optimal results. Band and loop SM is mostly indicated for the premature loss of single primary molar, but

Spring-mediated distraction enterogenesis has been studied as a novel treatment for short bowel syndrome (SBS). Previous approaches are limited by multiple surgeries to restore intestinal continuity. Purely endoluminal devices require a period of intestinal attachment for enterogenesis. The purpose of this study is to modify the device to prevent premature spring migration in a porcine model. Two models were created in juvenile mini-Yucatan pigs for the placement of three-dimensionally printed springs. (1) Two Roux-en-y jejunojenostomies with two Roux limbs were made. A spring with bidirection

PURPOSE: The treatment of malignant parotid tumors with 125I brachytherapy is rarely reported. This study evaluated the efficacy and dose and response of 125I brachytherapy in patients with malignant tumors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From July 2014 through August 2017, 39 patients with malignant parotid tumors were treated with 125I brachytherapy. Thirty-five patients were treated with conservative surgical resection before brachytherapy. Four patients were treated with brachytherapy alone. Clinical outcomes and side effects were evaluated. Clinical factors were investigated to determine correla

OBJECTIVE: Transnasal endoscopic skull base surgery (SBS) presents a major challenge for inexperienced neurosurgeons because of the complicated anatomic structures, 2-dimensional endoscopic view, limited operative field, and required skills. We designed a personalized multimaterial and multicolor three-dimensional (3D)-printed SBS simulation to reproduce the complex anatomy of the skull base. The fidelity and feasibility for anatomic education and surgical training were assessed.
METHODS: Two-dimensional computer tomography and magnetic resonance images were collected from a 42-year-old healt

For patients with head and neck cancer requiring a maxillectomy, obturator prostheses help with quality of life. These patients routinely require adjuvant oncologic treatments with significant adverse effects. Treatment sequelae can leave patients with difficulty speaking and swallowing, reduced salivary function, reduction in maximal incisal opening, and at risk of osteoradionecrosis. A 55-year-old African-American woman presented with significant trismus and reduction in maximal incisal opening after treatment for squamous cell carcinoma of the left maxillary sinus. She had received a left t

Resection of sternal tumors can leave large defects, which exposes major mediastinal structures, and can affect respiratory mechanics. If feasible, resection is potentially a complex reconstructive challenge to restore normal and functional anatomy using conventional techniques. We report the first Australian use of a three-dimensional-printed titanium and PoreStar prosthesis in a 39-year-old woman for reconstruction after major surgical resection of the sternum for metastatic breast cancer. The patient successfully underwent excision of the sternum and costal cartilages as well as implantatio

Amplification of molecular motions into the macroscopic world has great potential in the development of smart materials. Demonstrated here is an approach that integrates mechanically interlocked molecules into complex three-dimensional (3D) architectures by direct-write 3D printing. The design and synthesis of polypseudorotaxane hydrogels, which are composed of α-cyclodextrins and poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) triblock copolymers, and their subsequent fabrication into polyrotaxane-based lattice cubes by 3D printing followed by post-printing polym

BACKGROUND: 3-dimensional prints (3DP) anecdotally facilitate surgeon understanding of anatomy and decision-making. However, the actual benefit to surgeons or patients has not been quantified. This study investigates how surgeon understanding of complex anatomy is altered by a 3DP compared to computed tomography (CT) scan or CT + digital reconstruction (CT + DR).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Key anatomic features were segmented from a CT-abdomen/pelvis of pygopagus twins to build a DR and printed in color on a 3D printer. Pediatric surgery trainees and attendings (n = 21) were tested regarding anat

Orthognathic surgery is indicated for the treatment of significant skeletal malocclusion and is normally prepared using conventional face bows combined with two-dimensional cephalometric analysis and manually made splints. With recent developments in oral imaging, more orthognathic surgeries are being planned using three-dimensional computer-aided design and manufacturing (3D CAD/CAM) software. The purpose of this study was to present a protocol for the design and 3D printing of final digital occlusal splints based on 3D planning of orthognathic surgery and to validate the accuracy of these sp

Three dimensional (3D) printing is rapidly gaining interest in the medical field for use in presurgical planning. We present the case of a seven-year-old boy with double outlet right ventricle who underwent a bidirectional Glenn anastomosis. We used a 3D cardiac model to assess his suitability for a biventricular repair. He underwent a left ventricle-to-aorta baffle with a right ventricle-to-pulmonary artery conduit placement. He did well postoperatively and was discharged home with no evidence of baffle obstruction and good biventricular function. A 3D printed model can provide invaluable int

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2013eng
The growing demand for liver transplantation and the concomitant scarcity of cadaveric livers have increased the need for living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Ensuring the safety of donors and recipients is critical. The preoperative identification of the vascular and biliary tract anatomy with 3-dimensional (3D) printing may allow better preoperative surgical planning, avert unnecessary surgery in patients with potentially unsuitable anatomy, and thereby decrease the complications of liver transplant surgery. We developed a protocol and successfully 3D-printed synthetic livers (along wi
