Access to healthcare in Chilean prisons: an inmates' perspective.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the perception of access to Chilean prisons in a representative national sample of persons deprived of liberty as well as to examine the most important covariates of such access. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study uses secondary data from the First National Survey on the Quality of Prison Life (2014), which investigated inmates' perceptions regarding access to health services inside the prisons. To do this, it uses descriptive statistics and a logistic regression model. RESULTS: Descriptive results at the national level show that access to health services in prisons ten

Hepatitis C in Australian prisons: a national needs assessment.

PURPOSE: Hepatitis C (HCV) infections are prevalent in custodial settings worldwide, yet provision of antiviral therapies is uncommon. Approximately 30,000 prisoners are held in Australian prisons at any one time, with more than 30 per cent testing positive for HCV antibodies. Prisoners have been identified in the National Hepatitis C Strategy as a priority population for assessment and treatment. The purpose of this paper is to examine the rates of HCV testing and treatment, as well as barriers and opportunities for development of infrastructure for enhanced services. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPR

HIV and tuberculosis in prisons in sub-Saharan Africa.

Given the dual epidemics of HIV and tuberculosis in sub-Saharan Africa and evidence suggesting a disproportionate burden of these diseases among detainees in the region, we aimed to investigate the epidemiology of HIV and tuberculosis in prison populations, describe services available and challenges to service delivery, and identify priority areas for programmatically relevant research in sub-Saharan African prisons. To this end, we reviewed literature on HIV and tuberculosis in sub-Saharan African prisons published between 2011 and 2015, and identified data from only 24 of the 49 countries in

Tuberculosis in Jails and Prisons: United States, 2002-2013.

OBJECTIVES: To describe cases and estimate the annual incidence of tuberculosis in correctional facilities. METHODS: We analyzed 2002 to 2013 National Tuberculosis Surveillance System case reports to characterize individuals who were employed or incarcerated in correctional facilities at time they were diagnosed with tuberculosis. Incidence was estimated with Bureau of Justice Statistics denominators. RESULTS: Among 299 correctional employees with tuberculosis, 171 (57%) were US-born and 82 (27%) were female. Among 5579 persons incarcerated at the time of their tuberculosis diagnosis, 2520 (

Prisons as reservoir for community transmission of tuberculosis, Brazil.

We conducted a population-based study of tuberculosis (TB) cases in Dourados, Brazil, to assess the relationship between incarceration and TB in the general population. Incarceration was associated with TB in an urban population; 54% of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains were related to strains from persons in prisons. TB control in prisons is critical for reducing disease prevalence.

Detection of drugs in Australian prisons: supply reduction strategies.

PURPOSE: Prisoners have a high level of drug use prior to imprisonment. Many inmates report having injected drugs and using cannabis. Prison authorities employed a range of strategies to detect drugs and drug use in prison. However, it was unclear which supply reduction strategies operated, and the prevalence and types of drugs detected in Australian prisons. The purpose of this paper is to examine supply reduction strategies in Australian prisons. Information on searches for drugs, and from inmate urinalysis was collected. The study focussed on adults in fulltime custody in Australia in 2009.

Tarasoff duties in prisons: community standards with certain twists.

Because inmates' actions are restricted by incarceration, Tarasoff duties in prisons have certain unique aspects. There are two broad situations: (1) when the potential victim is located within the prison community; and (2) when the potential victim is located outside of prison. Although responsibilities vary widely from state to state, this paper discusses general principles of exercising Tarasoff duties in prison settings. In addition to duties to protect potential victims, correctional mental-health professionals have an ethical duty to protect patient confidentiality. Professionals should

HIV prevention in prisons and jails: obstacles and opportunities.

High rates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among jail and prison inmates suggest that HIV prevention efforts should focus on incarcerated populations. Overcrowding, the high prevalence of injection drug use, and other high-risk behaviors among inmates create a prime opportunity for public health officials to affect the course of the HIV epidemic if they can remedy these problems. Yet, along with the opportunity, there are certain obstacles that correctional institutions present to public health efforts. The various jurisdictions have differing approaches to HIV prevention and c

Costly missed connections: Visitation and misconduct in California prisons.

Social isolation is a major public health crisis with particularly deleterious consequences for vulnerable populations including incarcerated people. Theoretically, visitation from family should reduce social isolation and improve outcomes among incarcerated people, but existing quasi-experimental research provides limited support for the relationship between visitation and in-custody outcomes. We revisit the effect of visitation on in-custody misconduct-an important but administratively defined measure of institutional safety-by exploiting the fact that fluctuations in gasoline prices create

[Psychological care in prisons: the importance of ethical reflection].

This article sets out ethical reflections in relation to the clinical practice of psychic care in the prison environment.
