The body inversion effect is mediated by face-selective, not body-selective, mechanisms.

Evidence suggesting that the brain has specialized mechanisms for processing human bodies include the discovery of body-selective brain areas and the behavioral body inversion effect (BIE). Interestingly, the BIE (worse discrimination of inverted vs upright bodies) disappears for headless bodies, implying a critical role of the head in this effect. Previous studies have shown that the face inversion effect is mediated by the fusiform face-selective area. Given the central role that the head plays in the behavioral BIE, we asked whether it is mediated by face-selective or body-selective areas.

Reduced connectivity between the left fusiform body area and the extrastriate body area in anorexia nervosa is associated with body image distortion.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the network and its effective connectivity subserving body processing in women suffering from anorexia nervosa (AN) and also in healthy controls. Ten women diagnosed with AN and 15 healthy, age matched controls were investigated using fMRI during viewing images of bodies and chairs. Effective connectivity between cortical areas which are involved in human visual body processing was accessed. Effective connectivity analysis yielded evidence for a different network in AN and healthy controls during visual processing of human bodies. Left sided effe

Arabidopsis FLL2 promotes liquid-liquid phase separation of polyadenylation complexes.

An important component of cellular biochemistry is the concentration of proteins and nucleic acids in non-membranous compartments1,2. These biomolecular condensates are formed from processes that include liquid-liquid phase separation. The multivalent interactions necessary for liquid-liquid phase separation have been extensively studied in vitro1,3. However, the regulation of this process in vivo is poorly understood. Here we identify an in vivo regulator of liquid-liquid phase separation through a genetic screen targeting factors required for Arabidopsis RNA-binding protein FCA function. FCA

Blinded by bodies: Elevated eating disorder symptomatology is associated with increased attentional priority for thin bodies.

Selective processing of female thin-ideal body imagery is associated with greater body dissatisfaction, and eating disorder-specific rumination has been shown to mediate this relationship. Across two studies, we employed a modified rapid serial visual presentation task (similar to that used within the emotion-induced blindness literature), such that participants searched for a task-relevant target that was sometimes preceded by a thin body, non-thin body, or neutral task-irrelevant distractor. Our first experiment (N = 372) revealed a "body-induced blindness" in an unselected female sample, su

BR-bodies link RNA homeostasis to stress tolerance and intracellular fitness in Brucella.

Bacterial gene expression depends on the coordinated regulation of RNA synthesis, processing, and decay. The conserved RNA degradosome scaffold, ribonuclease E (RNase E), assembles into phase-separated bacterial ribonucleoprotein bodies (BR-bodies) through its C-terminal intrinsically disordered region (IDR). This IDR also scaffolds recruitment of degradosome client proteins that carry out post-transcriptional gene regulation. Whether BR-bodies regulate virulence programs to support infection, however, is largely undefined. We show that RNase E of the intracellular pathogen Brucella ovis forms

Where is your shoulder? Neural correlates of localizing others' body parts.

Neuropsychological studies, based on pointing to body parts paradigms, suggest that left posterior parietal lobe is involved in the visual processing of other persons' bodies. In addition, some patients have been found with mild deficit when dealing with abstract human representations but marked impairment with realistically represented bodies, suggesting that this processing could be modulated by the abstraction level of the body to be analyzed. These issues were examined in the present fMRI experiment, designed to evaluate the effects of visually processing human bodies of different abstract

Attention Biases for Eating Disorder-Related Stimuli Versus Social Stimuli in Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa - An Eye-Tracking Study.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by attention biases for eating disorder-related information as well as altered attentional processing of social information. However, little is known about the interplay between the altered attentional processing of these two types of information. The present study investigates attention biases for eating disorder-related information (pictures of bodies) versus social information (pictures of faces), in adolescents with AN. Attention biases were assessed via eye-tracking during a passive-viewing task in which female bodies and faces were presented simulta

Distinct neural response to visual perspective and body size in the extrastriate body area.

Neuroimaging research has independently implicated the extrastriate body area (EBA) in distinguishing between different visual perspectives and morphologies of bodies within visual processing. However, the combined processing of these physical attributes towards neural EBA response remains unclear, and may be crucial in influencing higher-order, aesthetic evaluation of bodies. Indeed, EBA alterations amongst eating disorder patients have been associated with disturbances in body image, and disruption to EBA activity amongst healthy individuals has been shown to influence aesthetic evaluations

DCPS modulates TDP-43-linked neurodegeneration through P-body-mediated RNA decay.

The proteinopathy of the RNA-binding protein TDP-43, characterized by nuclear clearance and cytoplasmic inclusion, is a hallmark of multiple neurodegenerative diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Through CRISPR interference (CRISPRi) screening in human neurons, we identified the decapping scavenger enzyme (DCPS) as a novel genetic modifier of TDP-43 loss-of-function (LOF)-mediated neurotoxicity. Our findings reveal that TDP-43 LOF leads to aberrant mRNA degradation via dysregulating the properties and activity of

U bodies respond to nutrient stress in Drosophila.

The neurodegenerative disease spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is caused by mutation of the survival motor neuron 1 (SMN1) gene. Cytoplasmic SMN protein-containing granules, known as U snRNP bodies (U bodies), are thought to be responsible for the assembly and storage of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) which are essential for pre-mRNA splicing. U bodies exhibit close association with cytoplasmic processing bodies (P bodies), which are involved in mRNA decay and translational repression. The close association of the U body and P body in Drosophila resemble that of the stress granule and

Evidence for ERP biomarkers of eating disorder symptoms in women.

Growing evidence suggests that the brain processes bodies distinctively from other stimuli, but little research has addressed whether visual body perception is modulated by the observer's thoughts and feelings about their own body. The present study thus investigated the relationship between body image and electrophysiological signatures of body perception, with the aim of identifying potential biomarkers of body image disturbances. Occipito-parietal (P1 and N1) and fronto-central (VPP) processing of body and non-body stimuli were assessed in 29 weight-restored eating disordered (ED) women and

P-body-mediated RNA decay controls neural crest EMT.

Neural crest cells, a multipotent vertebrate stem cell population, undergo a tightly regulated epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) to delaminate from the neural tube and initiate migration. Neural crest EMT is controlled by a transient pulse of Draxin, which acts as a molecular rheostat of canonical Wnt signaling, and is then rapidly downregulated by unknown mechanisms. To address this, here we use in vivo reporter assays and live RNA imaging to show that Draxin mRNA is rapidly degraded posttranscriptionally via its 3' untranslated region. We found that Draxin transcripts are targeted to c

Mutations in the survival motor neuron (SMN) protein alter the dynamic nature of nuclear bodies.

The childhood disorder spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is caused by reduced expression of the survival motor neuron (SMN) protein. SMN is a multifunctional protein that has been implicated in the production, processing and transport of RNA and ribonucleoproteins (RNPs). Within the nucleus, SMN is predominantly targeted to Cajal bodies (CB), which are involved in the maturation and processing of several subclasses of RNPs. Here, we show that the SMN exon 2b-encoded domain (SMN2b) is independently sufficient to mediate CB targeting, but that the resulting bodies are less dynamic than those contain

The CCHCR1-UBAP2L Interaction Promotes UBAP2L Release from P-Bodies for Stress Granule Assembly.

Ribonucleoprotein granules such as processing bodies (P-bodies) and stress granules (SGs) are membrane-less organelles that regulate mRNA metabolism through liquid-liquid phase separation. UBAP2L drives SG assembly and can bridge P-bodies with SGs, yet how it is mobilized between these compartments remains unclear. Here, using co-immunoprecipitation, GST pull-down, CRISPR-Cas9-mediated knockout, and immunofluorescence microscopy, we demonstrate that CCHCR1 directly binds UBAP2L and that this interaction is dynamically regulated by stress intensity. Under mild oxidative stress, CCHCR1 retains U

Pleomorphic forms of Borrelia burgdorferi induce distinct immune responses.

Borrelia burgdorferi is the causative agent of tick-borne Lyme disease. As a response to environmental stress B. burgdorferi can change its morphology to a round body form. The role of B. burgdorferi pleomorphic forms in Lyme disease pathogenesis has long been debated and unclear. Here, we demonstrated that round bodies were processed differently in differentiated macrophages, consequently inducing distinct immune responses compared to spirochetes in vitro. Colocalization analysis indicated that the F-actin participates in internalization of both forms. However, round bodies end up less in mac

Discrimination of foreign bodies in quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) grains using convolutional neural networks with a transfer learning approach.

The rising interest in quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is due to its high protein content and gluten-free condition; nonetheless, the presence of foreign bodies in quinoa processing facilities is an issue that must be addressed. As a result, convolutional neural networks have been adopted, mostly because of their data extraction capabilities, which had not been utilized before for this purpose. Consequently, the main objective of this work is to evaluate convolutional neural networks with a learning transfer for foreign bodies identification in quinoa samples. For experimentation, quinoa sa
