Identification of Topologically Associated Domains via Infomap Entropy Minimization.

Accurately identifying topologically associated domains (TADs) from high-throughput chromosome conformation capture (Hi-C) contact maps is fundamental to decoding chromatin architecture and its regulatory functions. Despite numerous existing tools, achieving a balance between computational time and the mathematical optimality of TAD partitions remains a significant challenge. In this study, we formulate TAD identification as a graph partitioning problem guided by the principle of Infomap entropy minimization. We introduce InfoTAD, a novel algorithm that models the hierarchical organization of

Force vs. impulse: assessing the applicability of dynamic strength indices in individualized training recommendations.

In this cross-sectional investigation, we aimed to compare impulse-derived (iDSI) and forcederived (fDSI) dynamic strength indices to determine their consistency in guiding individualized training recommendations. It also assessed the agreement between training prescriptions based on these indices and analyzed individualized neuromuscular profiles through case study comparisons. Twenty male skeleton and bobsled athletes performed countermovement jump (CMJ) and isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP) assessments in a counterbalanced order. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were conducted to examine difference

A Q-Learning-Based Hyper-Heuristic Genetic Algorithm for Optimizing Human-Robot Collaborative Assembly Lines.

Human-robot collaborative assembly line balancing and scheduling constitutes an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem involving the simultaneous optimization of task assignment, resource allocation, processing mode selection, station-level scheduling, and ergonomic constraints. This study proposes a Q-learning-based hyper-heuristic genetic algorithm (QLHH-GA) to solve the cost-oriented ergonomic mixed-model human-robot collaborative assembly line balancing and scheduling problem. The proposed approach integrates bio-inspired evolutionary mechanisms of population variation and selection wi

Resilience-oriented optimization of hospital microgrids with critical load support using ESS and PV under grid outage conditions.

This study develops a resilience-oriented optimization framework for hospital microgrids that integrates photovoltaic (PV) generation, multi-node battery energy storage systems (BESS), and medical load prioritization under grid outage conditions. A mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is formulated to jointly optimize ESS scheduling, critical-load support, and renewable utilization across a set of Monte Carlo outage scenarios. The framework introduces a multi-tier hospital load hierarchy (ICU, OR, imaging, pharmacy) based on Value of Lost Load (VOLL), and employs a composite resilienc

Bio-Inspired Phase-Transition Logic Gates for Autonomous Thermal Management.

Conventional thermal management strategies rely predominantly on passive heat dissipation or open-loop external control, struggling to address the transient and heterogeneous thermal loads of modern micro/nanodevices. Inspired by the sense-perceive-act closed-loop feedback of biological perspiration, we propose an autonomous thermal management strategy that encodes a first-order solid-liquid phase transition as a molecular logic gate. Within this phase-change-gated polymer network (Perspire X), the melting of polyethylene glycol (PEG) acts as a physical threshold. Surpassing this critical temp

Data-Driven Learning Distributed Optimization of Heterogeneous Linear Multiagent Systems.

In this article, we investigate the distributed optimization problem of heterogeneous general linear multiagent systems by the adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) approach over directed communication networks. A distinctive feature of this work is the development of a data-driven approach that eliminates the need for prior knowledge of system dynamics for all agents. To address the challenges posed by unknown system dynamics, we utilize the ADP-based data-driven approach to develop the distributed optimization control law. First, the feedback gain of the control law is determined based on the s

A comprehensive approach to optimize lignocellulosic biomass processing for cost-effective biofuel production.

As the global population continues to grow exponentially, the demand for renewable energy sources is more critical than ever. Bioethanol, derived from lignocellulosic biomass, has emerged as a promising alternative to fossil fuels. This study focuses on optimizing bioethanol production using a supply chain model that incorporates corn stover, sugarcane bagasse, and miscanthus as feedstocks. To minimize overall supply chain costs, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed, considering key cost factors such as feedstock procurement, bioethanol production, transportation, and f

Prenatal Exposure to Metals Is Associated with Placental Decelerated Epigenetic Gestational Age in a Sex-Dependent Manner in Infants Born Extremely Preterm.

Prenatal exposure to metals can influence fetal programming via DNA methylation and has been linked to adverse birth outcomes and long-term consequences. Epigenetic clocks estimate the biological age of a given tissue based on DNA methylation and are potential health biomarkers. This study leveraged the Extremely Low Gestational Age Newborn (ELGAN) study (n = 265) to evaluate associations between umbilical cord tissue concentrations of 11 metals as single exposures as well as mixtures in relation to (1) placental epigenetic gestational age acceleration (eGAA) and the (2) methylation status of

Food-based dietary guidelines for optimizing calcium intakes for reproductive-aged women in Ethiopia using local foods.

Increasing dietary calcium intakes of Ethiopian women of reproductive age (WRA) is a public health priority for reducing pre-eclampsia in pregnancy. Using linear programming, we determined whether locally available foods consumed by WRA in nine regions (urban and rural) and two administrative cities of Ethiopia could provide 1000 mg/day of dietary calcium, and we identified food-based recommendations (FBRs) to improve dietary calcium adequacy in each region. Results showed that diets providing 1000 mg/day of calcium were feasible in eight regions (40%) of the target populations examined. It wo

Object Motion Detection Enabled by Reconfigurable Neuromorphic Vision Sensor under Ferroelectric Modulation.

Increasing the demand for object motion detection (OMD) requires shifts of reducing redundancy, heightened power efficiency, and precise programming capabilities to ensure consistency and accuracy. Drawing inspiration from object motion-sensitive ganglion cells, we propose an OMD vision sensor with a simple device structure of a WSe2 homojunction modulated by a ferroelectric copolymer. Under optical mode and intermediate ferroelectric modulation, the vision sensor can generate progressive and bidirectional photocurrents with discrete multistates under zero power consumption. Rethinking LEO Mega-Constellation Routing to Provide Fast Internet Access Services.

In the realm of providing space-based internet access services, utilizing large-scale low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks have emerged as a promising solution for bridging the digital divide and connecting previously unconnected regions. The deployment of LEO satellites can augment terrestrial networks, with increased efficiency and reduced costs. However, as the size of LEO constellations continues to grow, the routing algorithm design of such networks faces numerous challenges. In this study, we present a novel routing algorithm, designated as Internet Fast Access Routing (IFAR), aimed

Sustainable urban mobility: Flexible bus service network design in the post-pandemic era.

The excessive traffic congestion in vehicles lowers the service quality of urban bus system, reduces the social distance of bus passengers, and thus, increases the spread speed of epidemics, such as coronavirus disease. In the post-pandemic era, it is one of the main concerns for the transportation agency to provide a sustainable urban bus service to balance the travel convenience in accessibility and the travel safety in social distance for bus passengers, which essentially reduces the in-vehicle passenger congestion or smooths the boarding-alighting unbalance of passengers. Incorporating the

An adjustment framework for mitigating the impact of rail transit construction on bus operations.

During the construction of rail transit, some road resources are occupied under construction and hence the capacity of affected road sections is reduced. Due to such temporary impact, the low operational efficiency of bus routes when passing these road sections is following suit, which is inevitably detrimental to the short-term traffic conditions and the urban environment. This paper proposes a three-step adjustment framework to actively mitigate the impact of rail transit construction on bus operations. In Step I, a criterion is developed for selecting bus routes significantly affected due t

A computational method for direct imputation of cell type-specific expression profiles and cellular compositions from bulk-tissue RNA-Seq in brain disorders.

The importance of cell type-specific gene expression in disease-relevant tissues is increasingly recognized in genetic studies of complex diseases. However, most gene expression studies are conducted on bulk tissues, without examining cell type-specific expression profiles. Several computational methods are available for cell type deconvolution (i.e. inference of cellular composition) from bulk RNA-Seq data, but few of them impute cell type-specific expression profiles. We hypothesize that with external prior information such as single cell RNA-seq and population-wide expression profiles, it c

Adaptive protection coordination scheme in microgrids using directional over-current relays with non-standard characteristics.

Protection coordination of AC microgrids (MGs) is a challenging task since they can operate either in grid-connected or islanded mode which drastically modifies the fault currents. In this context, traditional approaches to protection coordination, that only consider the time multiplier setting (TMS) as a decision variable may no longer be able to guarantee network security. This paper presents a novel approach for protection coordination in AC MGs that incorporates non-standard characteristic features of directional over-current relays (OCRs). Three optimization variables are considered for e

Flexible vs. standard subthalamic stimulation in Parkinson disease: A double-blind proof-of-concept cross-over trial.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamus (STN) is effective for the treatment of cardinal motor signs of Parkinson disease (PD). Structures around the STN can suppress dyskinesia and tremor (zona incerta) and improve gait and balance (substantia nigra pars reticulata). OBJECTIVE: Is the newer 8-contact linear lead connected to a 'flexible' DBS system superior to standard 4-contact stimulation in PD patients receiving STN DBS? METHODS: After 3 months of open label programming, 10 patients were randomized to standard or flexible stimulation before crossing over to the other

A Platoon-Based Adaptive Signal Control Method with Connected Vehicle Technology.

One important objective of urban traffic signal control is to reduce individual delay and improve safety for travelers in both private car and public bus transit. To achieve signal control optimization from the perspective of all users, this paper proposes a platoon-based adaptive signal control (PASC) strategy to provide multimodal signal control based on the online connected vehicle (CV) information. By introducing unified phase precedence constraints, PASC strategy is not restricted by fixed cycle length and offsets. A mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed to optimize si
