Language Disorders in Adolescents: Current Needs and Future Directions.

Adolescents with developmental language disorders often do not receive the type of intervention that would improve their ability to speak, listen, read, and write effectively. Part of the problem is that many of these young people show no obvious symptoms of a language disorder, yet they struggle on a daily basis to succeed at school-related tasks that require a sophisticated level of language development. This article discusses some of the challenges these students face and makes suggestions for what could be done to address the issues. These suggestions include continuing the effort to advoc

Intervention with linguistically diverse preschool children: a focus on developing home language(s).

PURPOSE: This article addresses a series of questions that are critical to planning and implementing effective intervention programs for young linguistically diverse learners with primary language impairment (LI). Linguistically diverse learners in the United States include children whose families speak languages such as Spanish, Korean, Cantonese, Hmong, Vietnamese, or any language other than, or in addition to, English. METHOD: A narrative review of the relevant literature addresses clinical questions including (a) Why support the home language when it is not the language used in school or

Four dimensions of naturalistic language production in aphasia after stroke.

There is a rich tradition of research on the neuroanatomical correlates of spoken language production in aphasia using constrained tasks (e.g. picture naming), which offer controlled insights into the distinct processes that govern speech and language (i.e. lexical-semantic access, morphosyntactic construction, phonological encoding, speech motor programming/execution). Yet these tasks do not necessarily reflect everyday language use. In contrast, naturalistic language production (also referred to as 'connected speech' or 'discourse') more closely approximates typical processing demands, requi

Engagement, satisfaction, retention and behavioural outcomes of linguistically diverse mothers and infants participating in an Australian early obesity prevention trial.

BACKGROUND: Early obesity prevention research interventions in Australia generally expect participants to be able to communicate in English, but do not account for other languages. This study aimed to investigate engagement, satisfaction, retention and behavioural outcomes of linguistically diverse participants from a mainstream early childhood obesity prevention trial. METHODS: Healthy Beginnings is a nurse-led intervention based in Sydney, supporting families with optimal infant feeding and active play via telephone. This secondary analysis assessed participant engagement in the nurse telep

A comparison of LISP and MUMPS as implementation languages for knowledge-based systems.

Major components of knowledge-based systems are summarized, along with the programming language features generally useful in their implementation. LISP and MUMPS are briefly described and compared as vehicles for building knowledge-based systems. The paper concludes with suggestions for extensions to MUMPS that might increase its usefulness in artificial intelligence applications without affecting the essential nature of the language.

Exploring how prison-based drug rehabilitation programming shapes racial disparities in substance use disorder recovery.

Prison-based therapeutic community (TC) programming is derived from the perspective that drug addiction is primarily symptomatic of cognitive dysfunction, poor emotional management, and underdeveloped self-reliance skills, and can be addressed in a collaborative space where a strong ideological commitment to moral reform and personal responsibility is required of its members. In this space, evidence of rehabilitation is largely centered on the client's relationship to language and the public adoption of a "broken self" narrative. Failure to master these linguistic performances can result in th

Current Research in Pragmatic Language Use Among Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.

In this article, we provide a narrative review of research literature on the development of pragmatic skills and the social uses of language in children and adolescents, with a focus on those who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). In the review, we consider how pragmatic skills may develop over time for DHH children and adolescents depending on age, language context, amplification devices, and languages and communication modalities. The implications of these findings for enhancing intervention programs for DHH children and adolescents and for considering ideal contexts for optimizing the prag

Communication and related problems as perceived by aphasic individuals and their spouses.

Aphasics' and spouses' perceptions of the presence and degree of bothersomeness of communication-related problems and whether enrollment in a language treatment program affected these perceptions were examined. Aphasic-spouse perceptions were more concordant in the treated group; aphasic patients in the untreated group reported their problems did not bother them. Type and severity of aphasia were not related either to the reported frequency or to the degree of bothersomeness of problems. Interview data from spouses revealed that the speech-language pathologists' role extended beyond solely pro

Interprofessional education on autism and intellectual disabilities: Program description and initial evaluation.

Project INTERprofessional Autism Collaborative Training (INTERACT) is an interprofessional education program designed to prepare graduate students in psychology, special education, and speech-language pathology to work with autistic children with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. The rising prevalence of autism, coupled with increased appreciation for interprofessional approaches to service delivery, indicates the need for university training programs to prepare graduate students to work interprofessionally with this population; yet descriptions of such programs and their effective

Language outcomes after cochlear implant.

QUESTION: A young infant seen in our practice was diagnosed with profound congenital hearing loss. Their parents want to pursue cochlear implant surgery for their child, but they are concerned about language acquisition before and after the surgery. What should they know about the procedure, and how can they improve language outcomes? ANSWER: Congenital hearing loss is often identified on newborn screening hearing tests. Cochlear implants may lead to overall improved spoken language skills among children with profound hearing loss. Some factors associated with successful language acquisition

Artificial stupidity or logimorphism? How misuse of language warps our thinking about 'artificial intelligence'.

'Artificial intelligence' (AI), as a blanket term, covers many advanced computing techniques that employ divergent methodologies for a wide array of functions. It is too late to affect general usage of the term without qualification-although it is a misnomer-but perhaps not too late to argue for the preferential use of more specific and realistic terminologies when discussing useful applications in science and medicine. Large language models are statistical tools for predicting text; machine learning algorithms are programs that discern patterns from data; and neural networks are mathematical

A taxonomy for detecting and preventing temporal data leakage in machine learning-based build prediction: A dual-platform empirical validation.

Modern software development relies on automated build systems that compile and test code whenever developers make changes. Predicting whether these builds will succeed or fail before execution could save computational resources and developer time. However, many machine learning models for build prediction suffer from temporal data leakage, a methodological flaw where the model inadvertently uses information that would only be available after the build completes, producing artificially inflated accuracy that fails in real-world deployment. This study develops a three-type taxonomy to systematic

Dyslexia and music. From timing deficits to musical intervention.

The underlying causes of the language and literacy difficulties experienced by dyslexic children are not yet fully understood, but current theories suggest that timing deficits may be a key factor. Dyslexic children have been found to exhibit timing difficulties in the domains of language, music, perception and cognition, as well as motor control. The author has previously suggested that group music lessons, based on singing and rhythm games, might provide a valuable multisensory support tool for dyslexic children by encouraging the development of important auditory and motor timing skills and
