A population study of prolonged grief in refugees.

AIMS: Despite the frequency that refugees suffer bereavement, there is a dearth of research into the prevalence and predictors of problematic grief reactions in refugees. To address this gap, this study reports a nationally representative population-based study of refugees to determine the prevalence of probable prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and its associated problems. METHODS: This study recruited participants from the Building a New Life in Australia (BNLA) prospective cohort study of refugees admitted to Australia between October 2013 and February 2014. The current data were collected in

Understanding mental health needs in Ukraine: protocol for a longitudinal survey of mental health in children and caregivers during the war in Ukraine.

Background: The full invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022 has created a situation of sustained stress for the Ukrainian population. Initial surveys indicate that Ukrainians have experienced elevated rates of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) since the onset of the war. Most research has focused on adults and there is relatively less study on children and adolescent mental health. Research that has been conducted is limited by (a) predominant reliance on parent reports of children's mental health, (b) biased sampling, (c) lack of integrated child and caregiver repor

Life review therapy for holocaust survivors (LRT-HS): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The Holocaust was one of the most traumatic catastrophes in recorded human history. Survivors seeking psychotherapeutic help today, now in their seventies and older, often show symptoms of a posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, or prolonged grief disorder. Established psychological treatments for PTSD (e.g. cognitive behaviour therapy, psychodynamic therapies) have been tested and assessed mainly with young and middle-aged adults; only very few studies examined them in old age. There is no therapy outcome study known to us for any treatment mode for Holocaust survivors

Intimate Partner Support as a Critical Source of Social Support on Women's Post-Trauma Mental Recovery: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters and child loss is strongly linked to trauma- and stressor-related disorders. This study examined how different sources of social support relate to PTSD and prolonged grief disorder (PGD) symptoms among women who lost a child in an earthquake. A cross-sectional survey with structured interviews and standardized instruments was conducted among 226 participants. Clinically significant PGD symptoms were reported by 89%, and PTSD symptoms by 54%, with 80% experiencing comorbidity. Having a supportive, affectionate, and confiding relationship wi

Unraveling attachment - A network analysis of the cognitive pathways linking attachment and prolonged grief.

BACKGROUND: Attachment style is widely recognized as influential in shaping responses to bereavement and prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Although theorized extensively, empirical clarity regarding how attachment styles specifically impact PGD symptoms and therapeutic implications remains limited. This study aimed to identify cognitive-behavioral mechanisms linking attachment styles to PGD symptoms. METHODS: Data were collected from a community sample of 695 bereaved adults. Network analysis explored interactions between attachment styles (anxious and avoidant) and various cognitive-behavioral

Individual and systemic variables associated with prolonged grief and other emotional distress in bereaved children.

Most children confronted with the death of a loved one do not experience persisting psychological problems. However, for some, acute grief reactions develop into prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and other mental health problems. Research findings suggest that bereavement outcomes in children are associated with negative cognitions and avoidant coping and with different parenting behaviours. However, knowledge about factors influencing grief in children is still limited and few studies have examined the relative impact of psychological (individual-level) variables and systemic (family-level) vari

Exploring the mental health correlates of overdose loss.

Despite the exorbitant rise in overdose-related deaths, little is known about the mental health burden associated with this form of loss. Using validated self-report instruments, the present study investigated the prevalence of pathological symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and suicide risk among a sample of overdose loss survivors (n = 115). Comparison groups consisting of other sudden loss survivors (suicide and sudden-natural loss) were employed to illuminate any shared or

Factors Associated with Mental Health Outcomes Following Drug Overdose Loss.

The ongoing overdose crisis has created a widespread but understudied population of bereaved individuals at elevated risk for adverse mental health outcomes. This study examines cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal factors associated with symptom severity of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among 115 adults who lost a loved one to drug overdose. Participants completed an online survey assessing continuing bonds, centrality of the death event, integration of the loss, unfinished busin

Diagnosis and classification of disorders specifically associated with stress: proposals for ICD-11.

The diagnostic concepts of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other disorders specifically associated with stress have been intensively discussed among neuro- and social scientists, clinicians, epidemiologists, public health planners and humanitarian aid workers around the world. PTSD and adjustment disorder are among the most widely used diagnoses in mental health care worldwide. This paper describes proposals that aim to maximize clinical utility for the classification and grouping of disorders specifically associated with stress in the forthcoming 11th revision of the International C

Evolution of psychological condition in caregivers of patients with disorders of consciousness: a longitudinal study.

The aim of this study is to evaluate mood disorders and needs in caregivers of disorders of consciousness (DOC) patients during the admission to Neurorehabilitation Unit. A total of 80 caregivers was enrolled and divided in two groups (caregivers of vegetative state-VS patients and caregivers of minimally conscious state-MCS patients). Paired sample t tests were carried out to test differences between baseline observation (T0) and after 6 months (T1). Caregivers of VS patients showed an improvement between T0 and T1 especially, in vitality, mean health, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), Spie

Embodied harm and health consequences: self-reported physiological symptoms among co-victims of cold-case homicides.

BACKGROUND: Families of victims of unresolved ("cold case") homicides endure not only prolonged emotional devastation but also chronic exposure to stressors linked to institutional inaction and uncertainty. While previous studies have addressed trauma, grief, and mental health consequences among co-victims of homicide, minimal scholarly attention has been devoted to the physical and physiological impact of unresolved loss, particularly when justice remains indefinitely suspended. METHODS: This qualitative study draws on in-depth semi-structured interviews with 13 co-victims of cold-case homic

Distinctiveness of symptoms of prolonged grief, depression, and post-traumatic stress in bereaved children and adolescents.

Studies among adults have shown that symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) are distinct from those of bereavement-related depression and post-traumatic stress-disorder (PTSD). This study was an attempt to replicate this finding in two distinct samples of bereaved children (N = 197; aged 8-12 years) and adolescents (N = 135; 13-18 years), confronted with the death of a parent, sibling or other close relative. Using confirmatory factor analyses, we compared the fit of a one-factor model with the fit of a three-factor model in which symptoms formed three distinct, correlated factors. In both

The Psychological Impact of Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood: Associations Between Early Professional Interactions and Long-Term Distress Among Bereaved Caregivers.

Each year, approximately 500 U.S. children aged 1-18 years die suddenly and without explanation. Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) is a devastating loss with profound psychological consequences for caregivers. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 174 caregivers whose child's death was classified as SUDC at least one year earlier. Using a trauma-informed framework, we assessed anxiety (GAD-7), depression (PHQ-9), prolonged grief (BGQ), posttraumatic stress disorder (PCL-6), functional impairment (WSAS), and experiences with emergency medical services (EMS) and emergency department

Behavioral health correlates of the death of an acquaintance during a mass violence incident in six US communities.

Adults residing in communities that experience mass violence incidents (MVI) frequently experience adverse mental and behavioral health outcomes. However, little is known about the impact of experiencing the death of a close acquaintance during an MVI, which limits response efforts. Using a household probability sample of adults from six MVI-affected communities, this study examined the prevalence and correlates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and prolonged grief (PGD) among individuals residing in MVI-affected communities who experienced the death of a close acquaintance.

Neural substrates and potential treatments for levodopa-induced dyskinesias in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is primarily a motor disorder that involves the gradual loss of motor function. Symptoms are observed initially in the extremities, such as hands and arms, while advanced stages of the disease can effect blinking, swallowing, speaking, and breathing. PD is a neurodegenerative disease, with dopaminergic neuronal loss occurring in the substantia nigra pars compacta, thus disrupting basal ganglia functions. This leads to downstream effects on other neurotransmitter systems such as glutamate, γ-aminobutyric acid, and serotonin. To date, one of the main treatments for PD is

DSM-5-TR: Rationale, Process, and Overview of Changes.

The DSM-5 text revision (DSM-5-TR) is the first published revision of the DSM-5 since its publication in 2013. Like the previous text revision (DSM-IV-TR), the main goal of the DSM-5-TR is to comprehensively update the descriptive text accompanying each DSM disorder on the basis of reviews of the literature over the past 10 years. In contrast to the DSM-IV-TR, in which updates were confined almost exclusively to the text, the DSM-5-TR includes many other changes and enhancements of interest to practicing clinicians, such as the addition of diagnostic categories (prolonged grief disorder, stimu

Predictors of ICU Surrogates' States of Concurrent Prolonged Grief, Posttraumatic Stress, and Depression Symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: Scarce research explores factors of concurrent psychologic distress (prolonged grief disorder [PGD], posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], and depression). This study models surrogates' longitudinal, heterogenous grief-related reactions and multidimensional risk factors drawing from the integrative framework of predictors for bereavement outcomes (intrapersonal, interpersonal, bereavement-related, and death-circumstance factors), emphasizing clinical modifiability. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Medical ICUs of two Taiwanese medical centers. SUBJECTS: Two hundred eig

Psychopathology in a treatment-seeking sample of homicidally bereaved individuals: Latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Violently bereaved individuals are at increased risk of developing severe and comorbid disorders. Comorbidity may increase psychiatric symptom severity and suicide risk and decrease psychosocial functioning compared with having one disorder. We aimed to identify subgroups of individuals with similar symptom patterns, describe prevalence rates and overall levels of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) per class, and explore associations between class membership and personal and h

[Consequences of trauma and violence: impact on psychological well-being].

This paper addresses consequences of exposure to violence and trauma. Traumata are defined as events with an extraordinary threat or catastrophic extent. Beside Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), affected people may develop Complex PTSD, Prolonged Grief Disorder or Adjustment Disorder as direct consequences of exposure with extreme stress. Indirect trauma-related disorders are amongst others Major Depression, Substance Dependency and Personality Disorders. These disorders develop often comorbid to PTSD. The likelihood to develop a PTSD at one point during the life course is 1-4% in Germany.
