Proprioception is sufficient to coordinate simple bimanual lifts of unanticipated asymmetrically loaded objects.

The relative importance of proprioception and vision in control of bimanual lifting of a box with varied weight and weight distribution was studied to test whether availability of vision improved the lifting motion in terms of box orientation and temporal synchrony of lifting the two sides of the box. Twelve right-handed young adults performed a random sequence of bimanual lifts of a box with varied weight and weight distribution. When lifting a symmetrically loaded box there was excellent temporal synchrony of the motions of the left and right side and minimal deviation from a level box orien

Pathology of general proprioception in a canine disease model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Some forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are associated with sequence variants in the superoxide dismutase 1 gene (SOD1). The mechanisms by which these variants contribute to ALS disease pathogenesis are poorly understood. Degenerative myelopathy (DM), a naturally occurring canine disease, shares similarities with some forms of SOD1-associated ALS, especially cases with sensory impairment. While motor pathway involvement in ALS has been extensively studied, sensory pathology has received comparatively less attention. To investigate whether pathology in the general proprioceptive pathw

A Soft Inductive Bimodal Sensor for Proprioception and Tactile Sensing of Soft Machines.

The somatosensory system is crucial for living beings to survive and thrive in complex environments and to interact with their surroundings. Similarly, rapidly developed soft robots need to be aware of their own posture and detect external stimuli. Bending and force sensing are key for soft machines to achieve embodied intelligence. Here, we present a soft inductive bimodal sensor (SIBS) that uses the strain modulation of magnetic permeability and the eddy-current effect for simultaneous bidirectional bending and force sensing with only two wires. The SIBS is made of a flexible planar coil, a

Integration of proprioception in upper limb prostheses through non-invasive strategies: a review.

Proprioception plays a key role in moving our body dexterously and effortlessly. Nevertheless, the majority of investigations evaluating the benefits of providing supplemental feedback to prosthetics users focus on delivering touch restitution. These studies evaluate the influence of touch sensation in an attempt to improve the controllability of current robotic devices. Contrarily, investigations evaluating the capabilities of proprioceptive supplemental feedback have yet to be comprehensively analyzed to the same extent, marking a major gap in knowledge within the current research climate. Evaluation of proprioception in patients who underwent ACL reconstruction: measurement in functional position.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries cause mechanoreceptor loss in the joint; therefore, proprioceptive deficits are observed after injury. In particular, proprioceptive measurements made in the functional position give more accurate results, and this is an area that requires further studies. This study aimed to evaluate proprioception in patients who had undergone ACL reconstruction (ACLR) in functional positions used in daily life (closed kinetic chain position), according to joint angles where ACL injuries occur more frequently, in comparison with healthy controls. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Proprioception Exercises as an Addition to the Rehabilitation Process.

Respiratory rehabilitation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is recognized as a cornerstone for the therapeutic path. Physiotherapy involves physical activity with aerobic and anaerobic exercises, which can improve the patient's symptomatic picture, such as motor function, emotional status (depression and anxiety), and improve the pain perception. The training of proprioception is not included in the structure of the exercises proposed by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD). The training of proprioception is a very useful strategy for s

Relationship between proprioception at the knee joint and gait ataxia in HSAN III.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type III features marked ataxic gait that progressively worsens over time. We assessed whether proprioceptive disturbances can explain the ataxia. METHODS: Proprioception at the knee joint was assessed using passive joint angle matching in 18 patients and 14 age-matched controls; 5 patients with cerebellar ataxia were also studied. Ataxia was quantified using the Brief Ataxia Rating Score, which ranged from 7 to 26 of 30. RESULTS: Neuropathy patients performed poorly in judging joint position: mean absolute error was 8.7° ± 1.0°, and th

Amelioration of symptoms by enhancement of proprioception in patients with joint hypermobility syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS) is characterized by an association between joint hypermobility and musculoskeletal pains, the latter occurring in the absence of any objective indicator of rheumatic disease. The lack of a recognizable disease marker makes this condition difficult to identify and manage. We previously observed that patients with JHS have impaired proprioception compared with that of a matched control group. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a home-based exercise program could produce objective enhancement of proprioception as well as alleviate sy

Proprioceptive sensory-driven mechanisms shape Clarke's column development.

Coordinated locomotion depends not only on motor programs but also on the sensory feedback that refines them. Proprioceptive sensory neurons (pSNs) modulate motor circuits through direct synapses, yet their role in shaping spinal cord circuits has remained unclear. Here, we uncover an essential function for pSNs in organizing Clarke's column (CC) neurons, a major spinocerebellar population. Although CC neurons are born early in embryogenesis, their distinctive columnar architecture emerges postnatally and depends on direct pSN input. Genetic ablation of pSNs reduces the number of CC neurons an
