Genes for chemokines MuMig and Crg-2 are induced in protozoan and viral infections in response to IFN-gamma with patterns of tissue expression that suggest nonredundant roles in vivo.

MuMig and Crg-2 are IFN-inducible murine chemokines whose human homologues, HuMig and IP-10, respectively, share activity in vitro as T cell chemoattractants. We analyzed the expression of the genes Mumig, crg-2, and IFN-gamma during experimental infections with Plasmodium yoelii, Toxoplasma gondii, and vaccinia virus. Mumig, crg-2, and IFN-gamma were induced in multiple organs. During the acute phase of each infection as well as after i.p. injection of rIFN-gamma, levels of Mumig mRNA in the liver were as high or higher than levels in any of the other organs. In contrast, the organs showing t

A baseline epidemiological study of the co-infection of enteric protozoans with human immunodeficiency virus among men who have sex with men from Northeast China.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and enteric parasite co-infection not only aggravates the clinical symptoms of parasites but also accelerates acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) progression. However, co-infection research on men who have sex with men (MSM), the predominant high-risk population of HIV/AIDS in China, is still limited. In this study, we investigated the epidemiology of enteric parasites, risk factors, and associations with clinical significance in an MSM HIV/AIDS population in Heilongjiang Province, northeast China. METHODS: We recruited 308 MSMs HIV/AIDS pa

Mice with a selective impairment of IFN-gamma signaling in macrophage lineage cells demonstrate the critical role of IFN-gamma-activated macrophages for the control of protozoan parasitic infections in vivo.

IFN-gamma has long been recognized as a cytokine with potent and varied effects in the immune response. Although its effects on specific cell types have been well studied in vitro, its in vivo effects are less clearly understood because of its diverse actions on many different cell types. Although control of multiple protozoan parasites is thought to depend critically on the direct action of IFN-gamma on macrophages, this premise has never been directly proven in vivo. To more directly examine the effects of IFN-gamma on cells of the macrophage lineage in vivo, we generated mice called the "ma

First Report and Morphological Characterization of the Protozoan Ciliate Chilodonella uncinata (Ciliophora: Chilodonellidae) Infecting Cyprinus carpio From Godavari Basin in Nanded and Parbhani Districts, Maharashtra, India.

A comprehensive field investigation was conducted on 300 specimens of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) from the Godavari Basin in Nanded and Parbhani districts between May 2024 and April 2025. The protozoan parasite Chilodonella uncinata was identified in 65 fish, resulting in a prevalence rate of 21.1%. Accurate identification was achieved using morphometric analysis under light microscopy, silver nitrate staining, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which revealed detailed ciliary structures confirming the species. Histopathological examination of infected gill and skin tissues showed marke

Validation of multiple diagnostic techniques to detect Cryptosporidium sp. and Giardia sp. in free-ranging western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) and observations on the prevalence of these protozoan infections in two populations in Gabon.

Anthropozoonotic diseases threaten the survival of western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla). Use of accurate diagnostic techniques in gorilla health monitoring contributes to the conservation of gorillas by providing robust information for appropriate management decisions. To identify suitable protozoa diagnostic techniques for wild gorillas, 95 fecal specimens were collected in Lopé National Park and east of Moukalaba-Doudou National Park in Gabon, areas with high and low levels of human activity, respectively. The samples were examined for Cryptosporidium sp. and Giardia sp. by usi

Tropical dermatology: Tropical diseases caused by protozoa.

UNLABELLED: Protozoan infections are very common among tropical countries and have an important impact on public health. Leishmaniasis is the most widely disseminated protozoan infection in the world, while the trypanosomiases are widespread in both Africa and South America. Amebiasis, a less common protozoal infection, is a cause of significant morbidity in some regions. Toxoplasmosis and pneumocystosis (formerly thought to be caused by a protozoan) are worldwide parasitic infections with a very high incidence in immunocompromised patients but are not restricted to them. In the past, most pro

Systematic review to evaluate the potential association of maternal and/or child intestinal parasitic protozoal infection with birth outcomes and linear growth faltering.

Intestinal protozoan infections remain highly prevalent among children and women of reproductive age, particularly across low- and middle-income countries. However, their impact on maternal-child outcomes-including birth weight, prematurity, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and/or childhood stunting remains largely undetermined. Here, we conducted a systematic literature search across six databases for studies published between 1976 and 2024 that examined potential associations between gastrointestinal (GI) protozoan infections, and childbirth and growth outcomes. A total of 99 cross-se

Protozoon infections and intestinal permeability.

Intestinal permeability (IP) studies using some macromolecules have been assumed to demonstrate the intactness of intestinal mucosa. The aim of the present study is to determine the changes in IP among patients with protozoan infections. Thirty nine patients with protozoan infections and ten healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Protozoa were diagnosed by Native-lugol, Richie and Trichrome staining of faeces. IP was evaluated by diethyl triamine penta acetic acid labeled with 99m Technetium (99mTc labeled DTPA) assay. The IP was found to have increased in patients with protozoan infecti

Opportunistic infections of the retina and posterior segment.

Opportunistic infections of the retina are becoming a more frequent diagnostic and therapeutic challenge as immunosuppressed patients become more common. Viral, fungal, protozoan, and bacterial agents may be encountered. Diagnostic and therapeutic considerations, illustrated by case histories, are presented in this article. Viral infections are characterized by progressive exudation and hemorrhagic necrosis in a segmental distribution corresponding to the retinal vasculature. Protozoan, fungal, and bacterial infections may demonstrate more focal lesions with greater vitreous involvement. Diagn

Prevalence of Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Entamoeba histolytica in the School-Aged Children of Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals in Bangladesh.

Intestinal protozoan infections, including Giardia lamblia (G. lamblia), Cryptosporidium spp., and Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica), are major contributors to global gastrointestinal morbidity and mortality, particularly among children in resource-limited settings. With this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of protozoan infections among forcibly displaced Myanmar national children aged 6-16 years by using a multiplex real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction method. Among 419 participants, the overall prevalence of protozoan infections was 49.4%, with G. lamblia being t

Assessing the burden of intestinal parasites affecting newly arrived immigrants in Qatar.

BACKGROUND: In the last decades, the enormous influx of immigrants to industrialized countries has led to outbreaks of parasitic diseases, with enteric infections being amongst the most frequently encountered. In its strategy to control such infection, Qatar has established the Pre-Employment Certificate (PEC) program which requires medical inspection before arrival in Qatar and which is mandatory for immigrant workers travelling to the country. To assess the reliability of the PEC, we conducted a survey of intestinal parasites, based on examination of stool samples provided by immigrant worke

A decade of intestinal protozoan epidemiology among settled immigrants in Qatar.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization estimates that about 3.5 billion people worldwide are affected by intestinal parasitic infections. Reports have already emphasized the role of immigrants in outbreaks of parasitic diseases in industrialized countries. With the mass influx of immigrants to Qatar, patent intestinal parasitic infections have been observed. Herein, the prevalence of intestinal protozoan infections was analysed in 29,286 records of subjects referred for stool examination at the Hamad Medical Corporation over the course of a decade (2005 to 2014, inclusive). RESULTS: Overal

Protozoan Parasites and Type I IFNs.

For many years, the role of interferon (IFN)-I has been characterized primarily in the context of viral infections. However, regulatory functions mediated by IFN-I have also been described against bacterial infections and in tumor immunology. Only recently, the interest in understanding the immune functions mediated by IFN-I has dramatically increased in the field of protozoan infections. In this review, we discuss the discrete role of IFN-I in the immune response against major protozoan infections: Plasmodium, Leishmania, Trypanosoma, and Toxoplasma.

Socio-demographic influences on the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections among workers in Qatar.

BACKGROUND: The rapid growth of Qatar in the last two decades has been associated with an enormous expansion of building programs in its cities and in the provision of new service industries. This in turn has attracted a large influx of immigrant workers seeking employment in jobs associated with food handling, domestic service, and the building industry. Many of these immigrants come from countries in the tropics and subtropics where intestinal parasitic infections are common. In this study, we explored the environmental and socio-demographic characteristics of immigrant workers in Doha Qatar

Parasitic infections in travelers and immigrants: part I protozoa.

The growth in international commerce, travel and migration contribute to the global emergence of certain parasitic infections. Importation of vectors and food products may contribute to the emergence of protozoan infections in nonendemic countries. Infections such as malaria are potentially fatal, especially in nonimmune patients, and outcome depends largely on timely diagnosis and treatment. Diagnosis/management of imported parasitic infections may be complex especially as some patients may have underlying immunosuppressive conditions such as HIV infection. Major challenges concern the develo

Trichomonas vaginalis infection in symbiosis with Trichomonasvirus and Mycoplasma.

Trichomonas vaginalis is a protozoan with an extracellular obligatory parasitic lifestyle exclusively adapted to the human urogenital tract and responsible for nearly a quarter billion sexually transmitted infections worldwide each year. This review focuses on symbiotic Trichomonasvirus and mycoplasmas carried by the protozoan, their molecular features and their role in altering the human vaginal microbiome and the immunopathogenicity of the parasite. Improved diagnostics and larger clinical interventional studies are needed to confirm the causative role of protozoan symbionts in the variable

Pathogens of the Human Central Nervous System-the Major Protozoan Parasites and Helminths.

Numerous pathogen infections can initiate potentially fatal neurological inflammation, including encephalitis, meningitis, meningoencephalitis, and myelitis. Several protozoan parasites and helminths can initiate neurological disorders. Pathogens can achieve this either by their original active infections, or by reactivated infections after a period of latency. The pathogens can be transmitted between humans or to humans by respiratory droplets, ingestion, or physical contact. Or the infections can be transmitted to humans by nonhuman vectors, by means of bites from mosquitoes, ticks, flies, o
