Intensive Care Unit Nurses' Lived Experiences of Psychological Stress and Trauma Caring for COVID-19 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses are enduring unprecedented burden caring for COVID-19 patients. Few studies have reported types of work-related events that lead to occupational stress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: ICU nurses were recruited at an academic health science center to explore their experiences of caring for COVID-19 patients. Participants were interviewed for 1 hour using open-ended questions. Symptoms of PTSD were assessed using the PTSD Checklist, job satisfaction with a Likert-type scale, and intention to leave their job with a "yes or no" ques

Rumination's Role in Second Victim Nurses' Recovery From Psychological Trauma: A Cross-Sectional Study in China.

Background: Nurses can experience psychological trauma after adverse nursing events, making it likely for them to become second victims (SVs). This negatively impacts patient safety and nurses' development. This study aims to understand the status of psychological trauma and recovery of nurses as SVs in domestic China and examine the influencing mechanism of cognitive rumination during their recovery from psychological damage. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey. An online questionnaire was completed by 233 nurses from across China. Data were collected using Chinese versions of the Seco

Correlates of crack abuse among drug-using incarcerated women: psychological trauma, social support, and coping behavior.

This investigation examines the relationship between psychological trauma and crack abuse among 158 women with a recent history of drug use who were incarcerated in a New York City jail facility. Interviewers obtained data on demographics, drug use, psychological trauma history, criminal history, social support, and coping behavior variables. Three-fourths of the total sample had used crack three or more times a week for a month in the past; a quarter had used other drugs, predominantly heroin, three or more times a week for a month in the past. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used t

The relationship between hand function, depression, and the psychological impact of trauma in patients with traumatic hand injury.

The aim of this study was to investigate the acute-stage and later-stage impacts of trauma on a patient, and to determine the relationship between the degree of the impact of the event and recovery of hand function in patients with traumatic hand injury. The functional status of patients was assessed by the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire; psychological influence was assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI); and the impact of the event was assessed by the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) both during the acute stage and at a later stage. The role of childhood trauma, psychological problems, and coping in the development of deviant sexual fantasies in sexual offenders.

To understand how and why most people entertain deviant sexual fantasies without really desiring to act on them whereas some people put them into practice, it is essential to better understand the origin, development, and functions of deviant sexual fantasy in sexual offenders. The present paper investigates three areas of the literature on sexual offenders, i.e. early traumatic experiences, psychological problems, in terms of psychiatric disorders and negative emotional states, and coping strategies, hypothesizing a possible path through which early traumatic experiences may lead to deviant s

The importance of gender on outcome after major trauma: functional and psychologic outcomes in women versus men.

BACKGROUND: Outcome after major trauma is an increasingly important focus of injury research. The effect of gender on functional and psychological outcomes has not been examined. The Trauma Recovery Project is a large, prospective, epidemiologic study designed to examine multiple outcomes after major trauma, including quality of life, functional outcome, and psychological sequelae such as depression and early symptoms of acute stress reaction. The specific objectives of the present report are to examine gender differences in short- and long-term functional and psychological outcomes in the Tra

Dismantling Psychological Interventions for Youth with Complex Trauma: A Systematic Review and Component Network Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Complex trauma-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and comorbidities pose a significant mental health burden in children. However, the comparative effectiveness of psychological interventions and shared therapeutic components remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review, network, and component network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of psychological interventions for children and adolescents with complex trauma. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Library were searched up to September 2024. PTSD was the primary outcome; ret

Trauma-focused psychological interventions for psychosis: Meta-analytic evidence of differential effects on delusions and hallucinations.

Childhood trauma is a well-established risk factor for the onset and persistence of psychotic symptoms. Consequently, trauma-focused interventions (TFIs) are increasingly incorporated into psychosis treatment, though their effectiveness in reducing hallucinations and delusions remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of TFIs on psychosis-related outcomes in individuals with psychotic disorders or subclinical symptoms. Thirty-six studies (N = 1,384) were included, with 18 (N = 806) contributing to meta-analyses. Study quality and risk of bias were assessed

Psychological Resilience Buffers Depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Due to Childhood Trauma in Thai Seniors.

Background and Objectives: Thailand's demographic shift toward an aging population increases vulnerability among older adults to the long-term mental health effects of childhood trauma. While childhood adversity is linked to heightened risks of late-life depression and PTSD, the moderating role of resilience remains underexplored in Thai older adults. This study investigated whether resilience moderates the association between childhood trauma and depressive or PTSD symptoms in this population. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 201 older patients (mean age 68.6

Psychological Resilience to Trauma and Risk of COVID-19 Infection and Somatic Symptoms Across 2 Years.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to trauma increases the risk of somatic symptoms, as well as acute and chronic physical diseases. However, many individuals display psychological resilience, showing positive psychological adaptation despite trauma exposure. Resilience to prior trauma may be a protective factor for physical health during subsequent stressors, including the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Using data from 528 US adults in a longitudinal cohort study, we examined psychological resilience to lifetime potentially traumatic events early in the pandemic and the risk of COVID-19 infection and somatic

Moving toward transdisciplinary approaches to addressing HIV and psychological trauma: Barriers and facilitators to building collaborations.

Most people living with HIV have experienced potentially traumatic events (e.g., physical assault, sexual assault, intimate partner violence) and, consequently, are at risk of trauma-related mental health difficulties, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet, research and clinical efforts related to HIV and psychological trauma remain siloed. Guided by the four-phase model of transdisciplinary research, the current study explored barriers and facilitators to transdisciplinary HIV/trauma clinical and research collaborations to address the overlap between HIV and psychological trauma

Trauma-related dissociation: Psychological features and psychophysiological responses to script-driven imagery in borderline personality disorder.

Defense reactions to threatening situations are vital adaptations to stress that protect organisms from injury and ensure survival. We retrospectively investigated the role of peritraumatic dissociation (PD) in the occurrence of severe psychopathology and dissociative patterns of reactions in borderline personality disorder (BPD). We recruited 28 patients with a clinical diagnosis of BPD and 15 healthy controls. The BPD group was divided according to the level of PD (low vs. high): BPD and PD (n = 15) and BPD only (n = 13). We conducted an extensive investigation of history of trauma, clinical

Peritraumatic panic attacks and health outcomes two years after psychological trauma: implications for intervention and research.

Several studies have suggested that experiencing a peritraumatic panic attack (PPA) during a traumatic event predicts future mental health status. Some investigators have suggested that this finding has psychotherapeutic significance. We assessed the hypothesis that PPA was not related to longer-term health status after event exposure, once background confounders were controlled. In our study we assessed exposure to the World Trade Center disaster (WTCD) and other negative life events, demographic factors, social support, self-esteem, and panic attack onset in predicting health outcome among 1

Trauma-related psychological disorders among Palestinian children and adults in Gaza and West Bank, 2005-2008.

BACKGROUND: Trauma from war and violence has led to psychological disorders in individuals living in the Gaza strip and West Bank. Few reports are available on the psychiatric disorders seen in children and adolescents or the treatment of affected populations. This study was conducted in order to describe the occurrence and treatment of psychiatric disorders in the Palestinian populations of the Gaza strip and Nablus district in the West Bank. METHODS: From 2005 to 2008, 1369 patients aged more than 1 year were identified through a local mental health and counseling health network. All were c

The Fake Bad Scale and MMPI-2 F-family in detection of implausible psychological trauma claims.

We tested the validity of the Lees-Haley Fake Bad Scale (FBS) and the family of MMPI-2 F scales (F-family; F, F(p), and F-K scales) in predicting improbable psychological trauma claims in an applied setting. Litigants reporting implausible symptoms long after minor scares and nonlitigants clinically referred following severe stressors completed the MMPI-2. Both groups were naturally matched on social class. The FBS demonstrated sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive power in the detection of atypical problems but the F-family showed poor utility. FBS cutting scores derived from logi

Cognitive modulation of the relationship between psychological pain and childhood trauma in patients with a history of suicide attempts.

BACKGROUND: Psychological pain and childhood trauma are strongly associated with suicidal behaviour in mood disorders. This study examined whether specific cognitive functions are associated with variability in the relationship between psychological pain, childhood trauma, and lifetime history of suicide attempt in patients with mood disorders, with or without psychiatric comorbidities. METHODS: A total of 494 psychiatric inpatients with a current or past major depressive episode were assessed for psychological pain, childhood trauma, and cognitive functioning. Cognitive domains included deci

Perspectives of a newly developed UK major trauma and plastics psychology service: A qualitative service evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Despite evidence of frequent adverse psychological reactions including PTSD in major trauma survivors, psychological support represents a frequent gap in UK major trauma care pathways. North Bristol Trust Major Trauma and Plastics Psychology Service has been newly developed in response at an NHS Major Trauma Centre (MTC). The service aims to address patients' psychological needs early on and throughout recovery from major trauma, alongside physical and functional recovery. Thus, a qualitative service evaluation was conducted. It aimed to explore major trauma clinicians' perspecti

Trauma and psychological impact in fibromyalgia and other central sensitization syndromes: the role of anxiety and pain acceptance.

Recent literature suggests an association between traumatic experiences and central sensitization syndromes (CSS), particularly fibromyalgia (FM). However, few studies have explored the specific variables involved in the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the severity of central sensitization. This study aimed to compare the frequency and characteristics of trauma, PTSD, and clinical symptoms among FM patients, other CSS patients, and healthy controls, and to identify potential mediators between intensity of post-traumatic stress symptoms and central sensitization s
