Time-of-day-dependent effects of bright light exposure on human psychophysiology: comparison of daytime and nighttime exposure.

Bright light can influence human psychophysiology instantaneously by inducing endocrine (suppression of melatonin, increasing cortisol levels), other physiological changes (enhancement of core body temperature), and psychological changes (reduction of sleepiness, increase of alertness). Its broad range of action is reflected in the wide field of applications, ranging from optimizing a work environment to treating depressed patients. For optimally applying bright light and understanding its mechanism, it is crucial to know whether its effects depend on the time of day. In this paper, we report

Is the psychopathic heart beating for fear? A psychophysiological investigation of fear experience in psychopathy.

OBJECTIVE: The Fear Enjoyment Hypothesis posits that individuals with elevated psychopathy traits experience fear-inducing stimuli less negatively and more positively than others. Building on prior findings that fear enjoyment primarily relates to the core affective-interpersonal dimension of psychopathy, the present study investigated the link between core psychopathy traits and both self-reported and physiological responses to fear-inducing stimuli. METHOD: Participants (N = 119; 68.9 % female; Mage = 35.04 years) prescreened for psychopathy and fear enjoyment completed self-report measures

Controlling heart rate variability for respiratory effects in ambulatory psychophysiological measurements.

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is the heart period variability observed in synchrony with respiration. RSA amplitude is widely used in psychophysiological research to non-invasively index cardiac vagal activity. However, RSA measures are significantly affected by respiratory behavior, even in the absence of changes in cardiac vagal activity. Fifty-to-sixty percent of the variation in RSA can be attributed to respiration rate and tidal volume. This poses a notable challenge for ambulatory RSA measurement where respiratory behavior cannot be experimentally controlled and can show substantial

Women with IBD Show Higher Psychophysiological Burden in Comparison to Men with IBD.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains an incurable illness. Patients with IBD show gender-specific differences in various aspects of the disease. There is still uncertainty about the causality of the differences. Methods: The aim of this study was to determine the most relevant psychophysiological gender-specific differences in IBD. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted on disease activity and psychological concomitant diseases in patients with IBD (n = 300). Among the 218 patients with IBD who provided gender information, both genders were equally distributed.

Experimental Study on Emergency Psychophysiological and Behavioral Reactions to Coal Mining Accidents.

Effective emergency responses are crucial for preventing coal mine accidents and mitigating injuries. This paper aims to investigate the characteristics of emergency psychophysiological reactions to coal mine accidents and to explore the potential of key indicators for identifying emergency behavioral patterns. Initially, virtual reality technology facilitated a simulation experiment for emergency escape during coal mine accidents. Subsequently, the characteristics of emergency reactions were analyzed through correlation analysis, hypothesis testing, and analysis of variance. The significant c

Psychophysiological Adaptations to Exercise Training in COVID-19 Patients: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Many COVID-19 patients display adverse symptoms, such as reduced physical ability, poor quality of life, and impaired pulmonary function. Therefore, this systematic review is aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of physical exercise on various psychophysiological indicators among COVID-19 patients who may be at any stage of their illness (i.e., critically ill, hospitalized, postdischarge, and recovering). METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Google Scholar from 2019 to 2021. Twenty-seven studies, which assessed a total

Psychophysiological reactions during the trauma-film paradigm and their predictive value for intrusions.

Background: Adequate adaptation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is crucial in potentially life-threatening situations. The defence cascade provides a descriptive model of progressing dominant physiological reactions in such situations, including cardiovascular parameters and body mobility. The empirical evidence for this model is scarce, and the influence of physiological reactions in this model for predicting trauma-induced intrusions is unresolved. Objectives: Using a trauma-film paradigm, we aimed to test physiological reactions to a highly stressful film as an analogue to a traumatic

Nightmares do result in psychophysiological arousal: A multimeasure ambulatory assessment study.

Individuals who frequently experience nightmares report compromised sleep quality, poor daytime mood, and functioning. Previous research has aimed at linking these impairments with altered sleep architecture, but results were inconclusive. One plausible explanation is that only a few studies recorded markers of autonomic nervous system activity. For the first time, this study collected such markers under ecologically valid conditions with ambulatory assessment. In 19 individuals with frequent nightmares (≥1 nightmare/week) and 19 healthy control participants (<1 nightmare/month), measures indi

Discarding personal possessions increases psychophysiological activation in patients with hoarding disorder.

Difficulty discarding is the core behavioral symptom of hoarding disorder (HD). Patients with HD report greater subjective distress when discarding their own possessions as compared to others' possessions. To date, no prior studies have examined psychophysiological activation, an objective measure of anxious arousal, during discarding among individuals with HD. The current study assessed psychophysiological responses during a baseline resting period and two discarding tasks, one involving personal possessions and the other involving matched control ("experimenter-owned") items in 52 patients w

Pharmacological intervention and abstinence in smokers undergoing cessation treatment: A psychophysiological study.

As a composite concept, negative affect comprises various aversive emotional experiences, such as irritability and nervousness. It is a critical motivational factor that helps maintain smoking behavior, and contributes significantly to smoking cessation failure as a core withdrawal symptom. Prior research has indicated an important role of nicotinic mechanisms in negative affect processing. The most effective smoking cessation medication, varenicline, targets nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) as a partial agonist, while another first-line cessation medication, bupropion, has shown ant

[Psychophysiological state of children in conditions of informatization of their life activity and intensification of education].

The transition to a new stage of the development - the information society is an objective reality and has an influence on all areas of the activity of the society, including the establishment of a child as an object of the hygienic research. In conditions of the general informatization of the society, the appearance of so-called “clip thinking,” explains the maladjustment of educational technologies to mechanisms of children ’ and teenagers ’perception and is confirmed by the growth of the school pathology and the gain in the morbidity rate. In the investigation on the example of the educatio

Place your bets: psychophysiological correlates of decision-making under risk.

Emotions and their psychophysiological correlates are thought to play an important role in decision-making under risk. We used a novel gambling task to measure psychophysiological responses during selection of explicitly presented risky options and feedback processing. Active-choice trials, in which the participant had to select the size of bet, were compared to fixed-bet, no-choice trials. We further tested how the chances of winning and bet size affected choice behavior and psychophysiological arousal. Individual differences in impulsive and risk-taking traits were assessed. The behavioral r

Psychophysiologic treatment for patients with medically unexplained symptoms: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients presenting with medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS) typically present with significant distress and marked impairment in functioning and pose a unique challenge to health care providers. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of a psychophysiological treatment (PT) for MUPS. METHODS: Thirty-eight participants meeting criteria for subthreshold somatization disorder (abridged somatization) were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: (1) standard medical care augmented by a psychiatric consultation intervention (wait-list) or (2) a 10-session,

Psychophysiological differences in schizophrenics with and without delusional misidentification syndromes: a P300 study.

There is a debate on whether delusional misidentification syndromes (DMSs) and schizophrenia are distinct disorders. Information-processing deficits have been found in both. Since the P300 component of event-related potentials (ERPs) reflects attention and working memory (WM) mechanisms, the P300 elicited during a WM test was studied in schizophrenic patients with DMS in comparison to schizophrenic patients without DMS and controls. Nine schizophrenic patients with DMS, 11 without DMS and 11 healthy controls were tested with a computerized version of the digit span test of the Wechsler batteri

[Anxiety patients before and after hospitalization for psychotherapy - from a psychophysiological standpoint].

Psychophysiological course studies are still the exception in AP hospitalized for psychotherapy. The aim of this study was to perform a more precise psychophysiological analysis of anxiety patients (AP) before and after hospital treatment. From a sample of 28 AP, 13 were psychophysiologically and psychodiagnostically examined and compared to controls (CG) at the beginning and end of in-patient psychotherapy and 4 months later. APs showed higher heart rate (HR) and electrodermal spontaneous fluctuation (SF) than control patients but did not differ in their resting systolic (SBP) and diastolic b

Psychophysiological and subjective indicators of aversive pavlovian conditioning in generalized social phobia.

Aversive conditioning has been proposed as an important etiologic mechanism in social phobia; however, empirical evidence is scarce and has not relied on a detailed analysis of the acquisition and extinction of the conditioned emotional response. Fourteen men sustaining generalized social phobia and 19 healthy control subjects participated in differential aversive conditioning with two neutral faces as conditioned stimuli and an aversive odor as unconditioned stimulus. Subjective and peripheral physiological responses were obtained. Both groups were successfully conditioned as reflected by dif

Trauma-related psychophysiological reactivity in women exposed to war-zone stress.

Women are at particular risk for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), but surprisingly little is known about their objective manifestations of the disorder's hallmark symptoms. Although research suggests that people with PTSD exhibit physiological reactivity to the presentation of trauma-related cues, the majority of studies to date have focused on men. We assessed the physiological reactions of three groups of trauma-exposed female Vietnam veterans (those with current PTSD, lifetime PTSD, or no PTSD) to war-related stimuli. Responses of women with current PTSD differed significantly from tho
