The effects of psychosocial stimulation on the development, growth, and treatment outcome of children with severe acute malnutrition age 6-59 months in southern Ethiopia: a parallel group cluster randomized control trial (EPSoSAMC study).

BACKGROUND: Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) remains a major cause of child mortality. To improve the management and survival of children the World Health Organization (WHO) endorsed the protocol for the management of SAM. The protocol suggested the integration of psychosocial stimulation as part of the medico-nutritional care process to prevent the long-term adverse developmental impact of the SAM. However, there is little scientific evidence behind the recommended stimulation intervention. METHOD: A parallel-group cluster-randomized controlled trial will be conducted among 144 children with

Linking the psychosocial aetiology and neurobiology of unipolar depression.

Psychosocial factors are an important contributor to the aetiology of unipolar depression. This paper reviews the evidence for the contribution of different psychosocial factors, and provides an overview of the proposed neurobiological mechanisms underlying the link between psychosocial factors and depression. Implicated psychosocial factors fall into three interrelated groups: life events, socioeconomic status, and social support. The life events most strongly linked with depression are bereavement, disability or medical illness, and childhood maltreatment. Others include refugee status, work

Needs Assessment to Inform a Life Course-Based Support Programme for Adolescents with Perinatally Acquired HIV in Rural Limpopo, South Africa.

This study explored the challenges and support needs of adolescents identified as living with perinatally acquired HIV based on clinical history and early childhood treatment records to generate evidence that can inform the development of an adolescent-centred support programme. A mixed-methods, sequential exploratory design was employed. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 APHIV (mean age 15.5 years, range 12-19; 61.9% female) recruited from health facilities in rural Limpopo, South Africa. In the quantitative phase, a survey informed by qualitative fin

Artificial intelligence-driven environments as emerging contexts in suicide risk.

Recent reports have described suicides temporally associated with artificial intelligence (AI)-mediated interactions, including conversational agents and algorithmically curated platforms. While causality cannot be inferred, these cases raise concern about AI-driven environments as emerging psychosocial contexts in suicide risk. This letter situates such observations within established frameworks, including the stress-diathesis model, cognitive theories, and interpersonal-psychological theory. AI systems may act as contextual risk modifiers by reinforcing maladaptive cognitions, promoting rumi

Uncovering Perceived Barriers to the Acceptance of Retirement Villages in Malaysia: A Factor Analytic Approach.

Population aging is reshaping housing and care systems, yet retirement village (RV) acceptance remains limited in Malaysia. This study examines perceived barriers influencing attitudinal acceptance of RVs using a cross-sectional survey of 142 adults in Klang Valley. Exploratory factor analysis identified five barrier dimensions: environmental and service quality, financial capability and affordability, regulatory and policy support, psychosocial, and socio-cultural factors. Environmental and financial barriers were most salient. The findings show that perceived barriers cluster into interconne

The authors note that mental disorders affect around one in eight people worldwide, with major impacts on family quality of life and substantial health system costs. Informal caregivers are advocated not as peripheral supporters, but as key partners in care pathways, to be recognized in public policies and clinical practice. Scientific evidence shows their involvement reduces relapses, isolation, and hospitalization rates. This viewpoint identifies significant psychosocial risks facing informal c
