Effects of a Counselor-Facilitated Rite of Passage Group on Behavioral Outcomes in At-Risk Adolescent Boys: Evidence From the Quest Project®.

INTRODUCTION: At-risk adolescent boys exhibit elevated rates of behavioral problems, interpersonal difficulties, and emotional dysregulation-patterns shaped by multiple risk factors, including disrupted family relationships, and compounded by masculine gender socialization norms that discourage emotional expression and help-seeking. Controlled outcome studies of group interventions specifically designed for at-risk adolescent boys remain rare. METHODS: Using a controlled pre-post design, we examined the effects of a 10-week counselor-facilitated rite of passage group-the Quest Project-on teac

Group Psychosocial Interventions Following Acquired Brain Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Group Process and Outcomes.

Acquired brain injury can result in disability with direct and indirect consequences for psychosocial functioning. Psychosocial interventions embedded within traditional neurorehabilitation may provide a valuable buffer. While there is evidence of benefits associated with group-based psychosocial interventions, there is no single recommended intervention, despite several different approaches having been trialled. This systematic review aimed to provide a critical appraisal of existing group psychosocial interventions in neurorehabilitation, meta-analyse their efficacy, and explore the contribu

Factors affecting treatment efficacy in social phobia: the use of video feedback and individual vs. group formats.

This meta-analysis assessed two potential moderators of treatment efficacy in social phobia: video feedback, and treatment format (i.e., individual vs. group). Eighteen recent (2000-2006) trials including a total of 511 participants were sampled. Effect sizes (Cohen's d's) were calculated for each trial while correcting for measurement error. The Q statistic was used to test (a) heterogeneity across trials and (b) potential moderators. Results indicated that use of video feedback was not a moderator of treatment efficacy and did not significantly affect effect sizes. In contrast, treatment for

Review of research on pathological gambling.

The literature including a number of review articles was examined for answers to the questions, have distinctive personality test profiles of pathological gamblers been identified, do pathological gamblers have control over their behavior, have studies of alcoholism and addiction increased understanding of compulsive gambling, and has psychotherapy or Gamblers Anonymous been successful for them? Much more information is needed to build on what research on these questions has yielded.

New ways to cope with depression-study protocol for a randomized controlled mixed methods trial of bouldering psychotherapy (BPT) and mental model therapy (MMT).

BACKGROUND: Due to the growing gap between the demand and supply of therapeutic services for people suffering from depression, with this study, we are investigating the effectiveness and factors of influence of new approaches in group treatments for depression. Two previous studies have already identified bouldering psychotherapy (BPT) as an effective option. It combines psychotherapeutic interventions with action- and body-oriented bouldering exercises. Mental model therapy (MMT) is a new cognitive-behavioral approach for treating depression. It focuses on identifying cognitive distortions, b

A Meta-Analysis of the Acceptance of Artificial Intelligence in Psychotherapy.

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) technology has demonstrated potential in psychotherapy. However, there is currently a lack of systematic research that comprehensively assessed public acceptance of AI-based psychotherapy. The purpose of this study is to use meta-analysis to explore public acceptance of AI in psychotherapy and the sources of heterogeneity. A random-effects model was employed, using Hedges' g as the effect size, to pool the differences in acceptance between the AI group and the conventional psychotherapy group. Subgroup analysis and meta-regression were used to expl

Tailoring the unified protocol for the treatment of burnout: A co-design approach.

Burnout persists as an unresolved issue, as the effectiveness of interventions remains a subject of ongoing debate. To address the need for more suitable intervention approaches, this study describes a methodology for adapting the Unified Protocol (UP), an evidence-based cognitive-behavioral intervention, for group-based use to treat burnout. To ensure that the intervention reflected lived experiences, we employed a co-design methodology based on the Experience-Based Co-Design Framework. The sample comprised participants currently experiencing burnout or who had experienced it within the past

The river of life method in a schema therapy groups.

Schema therapy is an integrative approach to treat patients with personality disorders and other complex psychological problems. Group schema therapy has been developed to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of schema therapy by providing a supportive and stimulating environment for change. This article introduces the River of Life Method, a novel technique for facilitating group schema therapy, based on the metaphor of a river of life. The method helps patients to identify and modify their maladaptive schemas and modes in a nurturing process in the group. The article describes the theore

The safety and efficacy of {+/-}3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine-assisted psychotherapy in subjects with chronic, treatment-resistant posttraumatic stress disorder: the first randomized controlled pilot study.

Case reports indicate that psychiatrists administered ±3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) as a catalyst to psychotherapy before recreational use of MDMA as 'Ecstasy' resulted in its criminalization in 1985. Over two decades later, this study is the first completed clinical trial evaluating MDMA as a therapeutic adjunct. Twenty patients with chronic posttraumatic stress disorder, refractory to both psychotherapy and psychopharmacology, were randomly assigned to psychotherapy with concomitant active drug (n = 12) or inactive placebo (n = 8) administered during two 8-h experimental psychoth

Therapeutic alliance and predictive validity of reflective functioning in conjoint mentalization-based treatment for borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have investigated the therapeutic alliance in treatment of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), particularly regarding alliance in group psychotherapy. This study aimed to investigate the development of therapeutic alliance in a 3-year outpatient mentalization-based treatment (MBT) program for BPD combining individual and group psychotherapy, and to examine whether reflective functioning (RF) predicted alliance development. METHOD: Patients with BPD or significant sub-threshold borderline personality pathology were included, with baseline data from 47 pa

The use of a group meal in the brief group therapy of bulimia nervosa.

The group meal is a technique that can be easily incorporated into traditional forms of short-term group therapy for bulimia nervosa. It is a modification of the exposure and response-prevention model that has been used in the treatment of this population. Patients plan and eat a meal together with the group therapist during one of the group therapy sessions. Over the course of the meal, patients discuss thoughts and feelings as they experience them, allowing for greater depth of therapeutic work than when simply recalling events that occurred between sessions. A case example is described to i

Effectiveness of Psychotherapy for Community-Dwelling Vulnerable Older Adults with Depression and Care Needs: Findings from the PSY-CARE Trial.

BACKGROUND: For older adults with care needs, evidence for the effectiveness of psychotherapy on depression is scarce. METHODS: In PSY-CARE, a pragmatic randomized controlled trial, N = 197 home-living older adults with depression and care needs were randomized into outpatient psychotherapy or an active control condition. Residential psychotherapists offered age-sensitive cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy (at-home if needed). Control group participants received telephone counseling and a self-help guide. Outcomes were assessed at baseline (T1), after (T2), 3 months after (T3), and 12 months

Facilitating Personal Recovery in Individuals With Mental Illness: A Longitudinal Qualitative Interview Study of a Person-Centred Group Intervention.

This study explored how participation in a person-centred group intervention influenced the personal recovery process of individuals with mental illness at the end of the intervention and 3 months after. Using a qualitative longitudinal design, the study was conducted in an outpatient clinic at the Psychiatric Department of the North Denmark Region. Seventeen participants completed the 12-week intervention, which included two Discovery group sessions and 10 Guided Self-Determination method sessions. Participants were interviewed post-intervention and at three-month follow-up. Data were analyse

The Tobacco Addiction Recovery Program: initial outcome findings.

Tobacco addiction is a major cause of excess mortality among individuals with severe mental illness (SMI). This study examined the impact of a brief group intervention developed for individuals with SMI that integrates evidence-based and recovery-oriented strategies to address tobacco addiction. The intervention was found to significantly decrease tobacco use and dependence and increase participants' sense of self-efficacy with respect to resisting the urge to smoke. These preliminary findings indicate that the Tobacco Addiction Recovery Program intervention is an effective, recovery-oriented

Theoretical Orientations and the Stereotype Content Model - Are Prejudices Barriers to Psychotherapy Integration?

BACKGROUND: Despite efforts to integrate psychotherapy, the field remains fragmented into distinct theoretical orientations and practical approaches. Prejudices held by psychotherapists towards those from other theoretical orientations may hinder cooperation in research and clinical practice. This study examines stereotypes among psychotherapists from different theoretical orientations and practical approaches ('psychotherapy schools') towards their in-group and out-group colleagues. METHOD: The cross-sectional online study assessed socially shared evaluations of 'warmth' and 'competence' fro
