Water-Related Impacts of Climate Change on Agriculture and Subsequently on Public Health: A Review for Generalists with Particular Reference to Pakistan.

Water-related impacts due to change in climatic conditions ranging from water scarcity to intense floods and storms are increasing in developing countries like Pakistan. Water quality and waterborne diseases like hepatitis, cholera, typhoid, malaria and dengue fever are increasing due to chaotic urbanization, industrialization, poor hygienic conditions, and inappropriate water management. The morbidity rate is high due to lack of health care facilities, especially in developing countries. Organizations linked to the Government of Pakistan (e.g., Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Climate Cha

Yersinia enterocolitica: a brief review of the issues relating to the zoonotic pathogen, public health challenges, and the pork production chain.

Yersinia enterocolitica is a zoonotic agent that causes gastrointestinal disease in humans, as well as reactive arthritis and erythema nodosum. Enteropathogenic Yersinia are the etiological agents for yersiniosis, which can be acquired through the consumption of contaminated foods. As porcine animals are the main carriers of Y. enterocolitica, food safety measures to minimize human infection are of increasing interest to the scientific and medical community. In this review, we examine why it is imperative that information on the reservoirs, prevalence, virulence, and ability of this pathogen t

Institutional and relational determinants in high- and medium-extent food product crises: the inner perspective of a public health crisis.

In 2008, Canada enacted its biggest-ever food recall in response to a Listeria crisis, stemming from a Maple Leaf Foods plant, that killed 22 Canadians. Afterwards, Maple Leaf's market share quickly returned to pre-crisis levels, but the long-term repercussions of the scare still reverberate in Maple Leaf's brand. In this case study, which offers an organizational perspective on the food recall, data was collected, through in-depth interviews of persons involved in the crisis response, and analyzed. The aim of this paper is to make transparent the ways in which Maple Leaf Foods organized their

Children enrolled in public pre-K: the relation of family life, neighborhood quality, and socioeconomic resources to early competence.

This article presents data on the family and social environments of 501 children enrolled in public sponsored pre-K in 5 states and tests the relation of these resources to child competence. Structured interviews and questionnaires provide information from parents about the family's social and economic status. Direct assessments and teacher reports provide data on children's literacy, numeracy, and behavioral problems. A majority of the children served in public pre-K lived in poverty and showed decrements in language but not in other domains. A socioeconomic resource factor consisting of pare

Discretion and Variation in Drug‑Related Federally Assisted Housing Policies Across Public Housing Authorities in Overdose-Impacted Jurisdictions.

Public housing authorities (PHAs) apply federal drug-related eligibility and termination criteria but retain discretion in specifying key provisions. We reviewed 36 written policy documents from 19 PHAs serving overdose-impacted metropolitan and micropolitan jurisdictions in 18 states and Washington, D.C. Jurisdictions were selected purposively based on local overdose rates and metropolitan or micropolitan classification. We coded six components spanning eviction and criminal activity lookback periods; definitions of current drug use; termination standards; and whether substance use disorder (

Implementation of evidence-based alcohol policies to reduce alcohol-related harm and liver disease to advance public health in Europe.

Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) remains a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in Europe. Despite robust evidence that alcohol-related population-level policies delay use initiation and reduce associated harms, their implementation in Europe has been inconsistent and frequently undermined by alcohol industry interference, fragmented governance, and policy inertia. The burden of ALD as well as combined metabolic dysfunction and alcohol-associated liver disease (MetALD) has grown steadily, driven by increased alcohol intake, widespread metabolic risk factors, delayed diagnosi

Private garden exposure and public park access in relation to type-2 diabetes incidence: a UK Biobank cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Existing longitudinal studies examining the relationship between greenspace exposure and incidence of type-2 diabetes (T2D) have primarily operationalized greenspace using vegetation indices. Little is known about the effect of greenspace types (e.g., private gardens) and public park access. METHODS: We investigated the associations between residential greenspace exposure, including private gardens (determined using Ordnance Survey MasterMap™ Greenspace) and public park access, with the incidence of T2D using the UK Biobank (UKBB) data. Public park access, such as nearest distance

Impact of Climate Change-Induced Flooding Water Related Diseases and Malnutrition in Borno State, Nigeria: A Public Health Crisis.

Climate change-induced flooding has caused public health crises in Borno State, Nigeria, which influence the increase of waterborne diseases and malnutrition. Flooding disrupts water and sanitation systems, creating breeding grounds for waterborne diseases such as cholera, malaria, and diarrheal illnesses. The displacement of communities and destruction of agricultural infrastructure due to flooding further increase food insecurity, leading to malnutrition. This paper examines the interplay between flooding, waterborne diseases, and malnutrition in Borno State, highlighting the urgent need for

Alpha proteobacteria of genus Anaplasma (Rickettsiales: Anaplasmataceae): Epidemiology and characteristics of Anaplasma species related to veterinary and public health importance.

The Anaplasma species are important globally distributed tick-transmitted bacteria of veterinary and public health importance. These pathogens, cause anaplasmosis in domestic and wild animal species including humans. Rhipicephalus, Ixodes, Dermacentor and Amblyomma genera of ticks are the important vectors of Anaplasma. Acute anaplasmosis is usually diagnosed upon blood smear examination followed by antibodies and nucleic acid detection. All age groups are susceptible but prevalence increases with age. Serological cross-reactivity is one of the important issues among Anaplasma species. They co
