Published evidence relevant to the diagnosis of impingement syndrome of the shoulder.

BACKGROUND: Acromioplasty for impingement syndrome of the shoulder is one of the most common orthopaedic surgical procedures. The rate with which this procedure is performed has increased dramatically. This investigation sought high levels of evidence in the published literature related to five hypotheses pertinent to the concept of the impingement syndrome and the rationale supporting acromioplasty in its treatment. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of articles relevant to the following hypotheses: (1) clinical signs and tests can reliably differentiate the so-called impingement synd

Pulmonary cryptococcosis in late pregnancy and review of published literature.

Naturally occurring maternal immunosuppression increases the risk of infection by a variety of pathogens during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Pulmonary cryptococcosis during pregnancy is relatively rare. Here, we report on two cases of pulmonary cryptococcosis during pregnancy and puerperium. Both cases were successfully treated using oral fluconazole after parturition to avoid fetal toxicity. For the two patients, the placentas were checked and found to be pathologically normal, and the cryptococcal serum antigen in both infants was negative. Pulmonary cryptococcosis should be consider

The importance of accounting for the uncertainty of published prognostic model estimates.

OBJECTIVES: Reported is the importance of properly reflecting uncertainty associated with prognostic model estimates when calculating the survival benefit of a treatment or technology, using liver transplantation as an example. METHODS: Monte Carlo simulation techniques were used to account for the uncertainty of prognostic model estimates using the standard errors of the regression coefficients and their correlations. These methods were applied to patients with primary biliary cirrhosis undergoing liver transplantation using a prognostic model from a historic cohort who did not undergo trans

Facilitated communication since 1995: a review of published studies.

Previous reviews of Facilitated Communication (FC) studies have clearly established that proponents' claims are largely unsubstantiated and that using FC as an intervention for communicatively impaired or noncommunicative individuals is not recommended. However, while FC is less prominent than in the recent past, investigations of the technique's efficacy continue. This review examines published FC studies since the previous major reviews by Jacobson, Mulick, and Schwartz (1995) and Simpson and Myles (1995a). Findings support the conclusions of previous reviews. Furthermore, this review critiq

Safety assessment of propyl paraben: a review of the published literature.

Propyl paraben (CAS no. 94-13-3) is a stable, non-volatile compound used as an antimicrobial preservative in foods, drugs and cosmetics for over 50 years. It is an ester of p-hydroxybenzoate. Propyl paraben is readily absorbed via the gastrointestinal tract and dermis. It is hydrolyzed to p-hydroxybenzoic acid, conjugated and the conjugates are rapidly excreted in the urine. There is no evidence of accumulation. Acute toxicity studies in animals indicate that propyl paraben is relatively non-toxic by both oral and parenteral routes, although it is mildly irritating to the skin. Following chron

Highly cited article published in the Veterinary Quarterly in 1991.

In early 1991, the Dutch pig industry was struck by the so-called mystery swine disease. Large-scale laboratory investigations were undertaken to search for the aetiological agent. We focused on isolating viruses and mycoplasmas, and we tested paired sera of affected sows for antibodies against ten known pig viruses. The mycoplasmas M. hysonoviae, M. hyopneumoniae, and Acheloplasma laidlawii, and the viruses encephalomyocarditis virus and porcine enterovirus types 2 and 7 were isolated from individual pigs. An unknown agent however, was isolated from 16 of 20 piglets and from 41 of 63 sows. Th

Segregation analysis of hypospadias: a reanalysis of published pedigree data.

Little is known about the cause of hypospadias, one of the most common urogenital anomalies in males. Familial clustering of hypospadias is well recognized, with heritability estimated to be about 70% under a simple multifactorial threshold model. Neither alternative genetic mechanisms nor shared environmental factors within families have been explored fully. To learn more about possible genetic mechanisms, we used 2 methods of segregation analysis to analyze a set of published family data. These analyses are based on the families of 103 probands with hypospadias, who were ascertained through

GAIDeT (Generative AI Delegation Taxonomy): A taxonomy for humans to delegate tasks to generative artificial intelligence in scientific research and publishing.

BACKGROUND: The integration of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) in research raises concerns about transparency, accountability, and task delegation. While frameworks such as CRediT and the NIST AI Use Taxonomy address contributions to research, they either exclude AI-assisted input (CRediT) or do not provide a stage-specific approach (NIST). A structured taxonomy is needed to delineate GAI's contributions across research stages while preserving human oversight and research integrity. METHODS: This study introduces the Generative AI Delegation Taxonomy (GAIDeT), informed by existing co

Delays in reporting and publishing trial results during pandemics: cross sectional analysis of 2009 H1N1, 2014 Ebola, and 2016 Zika clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Pandemic events often trigger a surge of clinical trial activity aimed at rapidly evaluating therapeutic or preventative interventions. Ensuring rapid public access to the complete and unbiased trial record is particularly critical for pandemic research given the urgent associated public health needs. The World Health Organization (WHO) established standards requiring posting of results to a registry within 12 months of trial completion and publication in a peer reviewed journal within 24 months of completion, though compliance with these requirements among pandemic trials is unkno

Reproducibility assessment of a published cell shape transition analysis workflow.

Image quantification is central to modern biomedical research. However, the reproducibility of image-based studies remains a persistent challenge due to limited access to raw data and incomplete reporting of analysis workflows. To assess these issues, the Global Bioimage Analyst Society (GloBIAS) launched a coordinated effort in 2024 to examine published bioimage analysis workflows. Here, we evaluated the reproducibility of a published workflow for analysing cell shape transitions in Dictyostelium discoideum. While the reported kymographs and biological conclusions could be qualitatively repro

Reproducibility of Published Meta-Analyses on Acupuncture for Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Published meta-analytic results should be reproducible from information available to readers. We assessed the numerical reproducibility of pairwise meta-analytic estimates of acupuncture for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). METHODS: We searched six English- and Chinese-language databases. Eligible systematic reviews reported at least one direct pairwise meta-analysis with recoverable study-level inputs. Each eligible pooled estimate was recomputed. The primary outcome was result-level numerical reproducibility. A prespecified standardized reanalysis was a key secondary analysis. Pro

Non-feline transmission of sporotrichosis: a systematic review of published cases.

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by species belonging to the genus Sporothrix. While zoonotic transmission has been primarily associated with cats, reports have pointed to sporotrichosis transmission by various non-feline animals, albeit infrequently compared with the aforementioned. These reports suggest the potential for zoonotic or environmentally mediated transmission routes with clinical and epidemiological relevance that have yet to be extensively explored. This systematic review organizes the current knowledge on sporotrichosis acquired by non-feline zoonotic transmission
