Drug-behavior interaction history: modification of the effects of morphine on punished behavior.

Squirrel monkeys were trained to respond under a multiple fixed-interval, fixed-interval schedule in which the first response after 5 min terminated a visual stimulus in the presence of which electric shocks could occur. During one component of the schedule, correlated with one color of stimulus lights, every 30th response also produced electric shock; responding was suppressed during this component to approximately 10 to 12% of that occurring in the alternate component in which responding was not punished. In contrast to previous research, morphine (0.03 to 1.0 mg/kg) increased punished respo

The effects of chlordiazepoxide HCl administration upon punishment and conditioned suppression in the rat.

Rats were trained to lever press for sucrose on a random interval (RI) 64-s schedule. During a 55 min session there were four 3 min "intrusion periods" signalled by a flashing house-light. In experiment 1 there were two groups matched for baseline response rate. During the intrusion periods one group received response-independent footshock on an independent RI 64 schedule; the other group received response-contingent shock on this schedule. Shock intensity was varied for each rat to match degree of response suppression between the two groups. Chlordiazepoxide HCl (CDP) in doses 0.5-5 mg/kg all

Drug effects in squirrel monkeys trained on a multiple schedule with a punishment contingency.

The behavior of four monkeys trained on a multiple schedule was differentially sensitive to selected pharmacological agents. The three components of the multiple schedule were: (1) a variable-interval schedule in which responses were reinforced on the average of once per minute; (2) a concurrent schedule in which every tenth response was reinforced and every fifteenth response, on the average, was shocked; and, (3) a neutral stimulus in the presence of which responses were neither reinforced nor shocked. Pentobarbital, chlordiazepoxide, and meprobamate increased responding during each of the c

Inequality aversion and prosocial punishment: Evidence from a one-shot public goods game.

The willingness to engage in costly punishment of free riders (prosocial punishment) is crucial to foster group cooperation and understand public goods provision. While prosocial punishment is common across societies, its motivations remain unclear. Scholars have suggested that people resist inequitable outcomes and willingly bear costs to sanction free riders, seeking a fairer distribution of payoffs. This study tests a key implication of such fairness-driven arguments: if inequality aversion drives prosocial punishment, individuals should punish less when redistribution occurs, as equality c

Examining the predictive validity of alcohol-seeking following punishment-imposed abstinence in mice.

BACKGROUND: A defining feature of alcohol use disorder that has captured the attention of fundamental researchers is "persistent use despite negative consequences." The last two decades have seen the preclinical field adopt the use of punishment to model the adverse consequences associated with alcohol use. However, existing research has focused on rats as the model of choice and alcohol consumption as the prevailing outcome measure. Additionally, the predictive validity of these models, that is, testing currently approved FDA treatments, is yet to be realized. METHODS: Here, we examined puni

Examining a punishment-related brain circuit with miniature fluorescence microscopes and deep learning.

We conducted a series of 24-hour waste audits in a 20-bed pod of a Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU) during the COVID-19 pandemic to 1) determine the unit's waste generation practices, 2) calculate associated downstream greenhouse gas emissions, and 3) identify opportunities to reduce landfill waste and emissions. We collected and weighed municipal solid waste, regulated medical waste, and mechanical recycling. We then compared the current, "as-is" practices to an ideal, "should-be" model which adds the alternative waste and reprocessing streams of industrial composting, advanced r

Greater resistance to footshock punishment in female C57BL/6J mice responding for ethanol.

BACKGROUND: One characteristic of alcohol use disorder is compulsive drinking or drinking despite negative consequences. When quinine is used to model such aversion-resistant drinking, female rodents typically are more resistant to punishment than males. Using an operant response task where C57BL/6J responded for ethanol mixed with quinine, we previously demonstrated that female mice tolerate higher concentrations of quinine in ethanol than males. Here, we aimed to determine whether this female vulnerability to aversion-resistant drinking behavior is similarly observed with footshock punishmen

Corporal punishment and early childhood development in 49 low- and middle-income countries.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically assess the association between corporal punishment and young children's development in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHOD: Data for 69 population-based surveys from the Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey (MICS) were combined. The sample included 131,164 children aged 36-59 months living in 49 LMICs. The surveys included information about children's developmental status and exposure to corporal punishment in the prior month. Logistic models, random-effects meta-analysis, and moderation analysis were used to obtain pooled estimates and assess the exten

Educating Parents About Corporal Punishment and Effective Discipline: Pediatricians' Preparedness, Motivation, and Barriers.

OBJECTIVE: To assess US pediatricians' preparedness, motivation, and barriers related to educating parents about corporal punishment (CP) and effective child discipline. METHODS: A random sample of 1500 pediatricians was drawn from a nationwide database in the United States. A self-administered questionnaire was sent via mail in 2016. The response rate (53%; n = 787) was maximized via repeated survey mailings and use of cash incentives. RESULTS: The majority of respondents were White (69%), female (59%) and were members of the American Academy of Pediatrics (85%). Most pediatricians felt som

Reward and Punishment Sensitivity and Emotion Regulation Processes Differentiate Bipolar and Unipolar Depression.

Bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) cannot be reliably differentiated by depression symptom expression alone, suggesting a need to identify processes that may more effectively differentiate the two disorders. To explore this question, currently depressed adults with BD (n = 30) and MDD (n = 30), and healthy control participants with no history of psychiatric illness (CTL; n = 30), completed self-report measures of reward and punishment sensitivity (i.e., behavioral activation and inhibition) and emotion regulation processes (i.e., rumination and avoidance). Results reveal

Analog of parental empathy: association with physical child abuse risk and punishment intentions.

OBJECTIVES: Current research has been inconsistent in corroborating that parents' compromised empathy is associated with elevated physical child abuse risk, perhaps in part because of an emphasis on dispositional empathy rather than empathy directed at their own children. Research has also relied on self-reports of empathy that are susceptible to participant misrepresentation. The present study utilized an analog task of parental empathy to investigate the association of parental empathy toward one's own child with physical child abuse potential and with their tendency to punish perceived chil

Critical roles for anterior insula and dorsal striatum in punishment-based avoidance learning.

The division of human learning systems into reward and punishment opponent modules is still a debated issue. While the implication of ventral prefrontostriatal circuits in reward-based learning is well established, the neural underpinnings of punishment-based learning remain unclear. To elucidate the causal implication of brain regions that were related to punishment learning in a previous functional neuroimaging study, we tested the effects of brain damage on behavioral performance, using the same task contrasting monetary gains and losses. Cortical and subcortical candidate regions, the ante

Emergence of responsible sanctions without second order free riders, antisocial punishment or spite.

While empirical evidence highlights the importance of punishment for cooperation in collective action, it remains disputed how responsible sanctions targeted predominantly at uncooperative subjects can evolve. Punishment is costly; in order to spread it typically requires local interactions, voluntary participation, or rewards. Moreover, theory and experiments indicate that some subjects abuse sanctioning opportunities by engaging in antisocial punishment (which harms cooperators), spiteful acts (harming everyone) or revenge (as a response to being punished). These arguments have led to the co

Childhood physical punishment and the onset of drinking problems: evidence from metropolitan China.

BACKGROUND: Evidence in support of a suspected causal association linking childhood physical punishment (CPP) and later alcoholic beverage-related disturbances has been found in metropolitan China. Here, the focus shifts to the CPP association with the estimated risk of starting to drink, having the first drinking problem, and transitioning from first drink to the first drinking problem. METHODS: Data are from the World Mental Health Surveys-metropolitan China study, with representative samples of adult household residents living in two metropolitan cities, Beijing and Shanghai. Punishment sensitivity and altered brain network centrality in cross-platform problematic online behaviors.

Problematic online behaviors often span multiple digital platforms, yet previous research has focused on single forms of problematic use. It remains unclear whether distinct cross-platform behavioral profiles are associated with differential reward and punishment sensitivity and alterations in brain network topology. This study combined latent profile analysis with resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to identify latent risk profiles of cross-platform problematic online behaviors among Chinese university students and examine their motivational and neural correlates. In Study 1,

Across six societies children engage in costly third-party punishment of unfair sharing.

Third-party punishment of unfairness shows striking cross-societal variation in adults, yet we know little about where and when in development this variation starts to emerge. When do children across societies begin to pay a cost to prevent unfair sharing? We present an experimental study of third-party punishment of unfair sharing across N = 535 children aged 5-15 from communities in six diverse countries: Canada, India, Peru, Uganda, USA, and Vanuatu. We tested whether children were more likely to punish equal or selfish (maximally unequal) distributions between two absent peers. We also tes

Custodial, corporal, capital punishment? Death in St. Wenceslas and Pankrac prisons 1827-1926.

Prisons were places where prisoners lost a part of their freedom and sometimes also health or even life. If they returned to normal life, re-socialization was not the worst problem. For many of them, it was challenging to find a way how to live on despite permanent health issues that led to decreased workability or even invalidity. In infectious illnesses like tuberculosis or typhoid fever, a released prisoner acted as a source of infection for their relatives, possibly causing worst health issues than he underwent himself. The cruel reality of historical penology can be demonstrated through d

Democratic decisions establish stable authorities that overcome the paradox of second-order punishment.

Individuals usually punish free riders but refuse to sanction those who cooperate but do not punish. This missing second-order peer punishment is a fundamental problem for the stabilization of cooperation. To solve this problem, most societies today have implemented central authorities that punish free riders and tax evaders alike, such that second-order punishment is fully established. The emergence of such stable authorities from individual decisions, however, creates a new paradox: it seems absurd to expect individuals who do not engage in second-order punishment to strive for an authority

Childhood physical punishment and later alcohol drinking consequences: evidence from a Chinese context.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study is to estimate a link between early physical punishment in childhood and later alcohol outcomes, taking family history of drinking problems into account, with epidemiological data from China. The yield from previous studies on this relationship is mixed evidence, largely traceable to research design variations, including model specifications that concern parental alcohol or other drug problems (AODPs) that might account for both earlier discipline practices and later drinking problems in the offspring. METHOD: Data are from the World Mental Health Surve
