OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcome of laparoscopic nephrectomy in patients with xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGPN).
METHODS: The medical and procedural records of patients with pathologically confirmed XGPN from February 2004 to December 2010 were reviewed retrospectively. During this period, 19 patients (mean age 37.5 years, range 14-77) underwent surgical management of XGPN. The records of the clinical history, mode of presentation, surgical management, hospital stay, and complications were analyzed.
RESULTS: Laparoscopic nephrectomy was performed successfully in 14 patients (73.2%)

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis and staghorn calculus are rare in children. In this report, we describe a Chinese boy without history of urinary tract infection who developed insidious onset of left flank pain. Urine culture showed Proteus mirabilis infection. Sonography and computed tomography of the abdomen showed typical picture of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis and staghorn calculus. Photomicrography showed characteristic lipid-laden macrophage aggregates. After nephrectomy, he was symptom-free. In conclusion, xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis should be considered in afebrile child

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is a rare chronic infection of the kidney. In this overview article we reevaluated the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of our four patients with histologically proven XGP and correlated them with the CT and ultrasound findings described in the literature. Additionally, we give an overview of the pathogenesis and epidemiology. The following criteria were found in MRI: hydronephrosis and/or urethral stricture, vesicoureteral reflux or neurogenic bladder depletion disorders, and calculus as the origin of urinary obstruction. Moreover, in contrast

A case of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (Stage-I: Nephric) with ureteral involvement is described. The patient had undergone right nephrectomy with the working diagnosis of calculus pyonephrosis and non-functioning kidney. Histopathological examination of the nephrectomy specimen revealed xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis confined to the kidney and non-contiguous involvement of ureter. Post-operative recovery was uneventful and there had been no evidence of disease recurrence till one year's follow-up.

The presence of contralateral renal tumour in a case eventually found to have Xanthogranulomatous Pyelonephritis (XP) resulted in a wrong preoperative diagnosis of tumour with bowel fistula. The patient's prior history of bladder tumour and multiple renal cysts is also discussed, along with the retrospective finding of very minor changes in an early angiogram.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is a rare, chronic inflammatory renal disease typically caused by bacterial infections. We hereby report a rare case of bilateral XGP secondary to Candida albicans in a 31-year-old female with multiple autoimmune disorders. The patient presented with nonspecific abdominal discomfort, painful urination, and generalized weakness. Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen revealed bilateral hydronephrosis, renal enlargement, and chronic changes consistent with XGP. Despite aggressive antifungal therapy, her renal function progressively deteriorated, ultimate

To compare perioperative outcomes between patients undergoing minimally-invasive (MIS) and open surgical approaches for the treatment of Xanthogranulomatous Pyelonephritis (XGP). Between 2007 and 2017 we retrospectively identified 40 patients undergoing nephrectomy at our institution for pathologically confirmed XGP. Patients whose operations were ultimately completed with open technique were analyzed with the open cohort, whereas patients whose operations were completed in entirety using any laparoscopic approach were analyzed with the MIS group. Twenty-three patients were analyzed in the ope

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is an uncommon chronic inflammatory renal disorder caused by chronic infection with gram-negative bacteria leading to destruction of the renal parenchyma and replacement with foamy lipid-laden macrophages. Renal malakoplakia is another rare form of chronic inflammatory granulomatous disease in the kidney associated with infection usually occurring in adults with immunocompromised status or debilitating disease. It is hallmarked by the finding of foamy histiocytes with distinctive basophilic inclusions (Michaelis-Gutmann bodies). We present a case of a 13-mont

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGPN) is a rare, severe and atypical form of chronic pyelonephritis. It is characterised by destruction of the renal parenchyma and replacement with a chronic inflammatory infiltrate and lipid-laden macrophages resulting in a non-functional kidney. The authors report a case of a 5-year-old boy presented with a history of abdominal pain, malaise, anorexia and weight loss for 2 months. Physical examination revealed a large flank mass and the child was directed to the oncology unit on suspicion of renal tumour. Based on clinical examination and imaging, the pre

Renal replacement lipomatosis of the kidney is a rare entity characterized by renal sinus and perirenal fat proliferation often caused by renal calculi. Most of the renal parenchyma is replaced by fat and the kidney is usually small, atrophic and nonfunctioning. We report magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography findings of a pregnant woman with xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis and renal replacement lipomatosis coexisting in the same kidney.

BACKGROUND: Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is an uncommon form of chronic pyelonephritis rarely seen in children. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult and management is still obscure.
AIM: The authors report on a focal pseudotumoral case and discuss therapeutic modalities.
CASE: A 2-year-old boy was admitted for a 2-weeks history of fever and right flank pain. Physical examination revealed a right lumbar mass. White blood cell count was 12.800/mm3 and C reactive protein elevated (50 mg/l). The urine culture was negative. Ultrasonography and computerized tomography demonstrated a focal mul

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XPN) is an unusual and rare form of chronic renal suppuration. XPN is often mistaken for renal malignancy; hence nephrectomy is commonly performed and the diagnosis confirmed by histopathology. Recent advances in imaging have allowed the radiological features to be characterized, such that routine nephrectomy is avoided. Approximately 240 cases of XPN have been reported in children. We report a 17-year-old female who presented with a 2-month history of increasing abdominal pain and intermittent episodes of increased frequency and dysuria. Plain antero-poster

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is a rare entity characterized by the formation of inflammatory renal masses rich in macrophages loaded with lipids. It is usually secondary to repeated urinary infections and urinary obstruction due to stones, which produce slow destruction of the renal parenchyma, requiring nephrectomy. It may sometimes be associated to secondary amyloidosis that leads to the appearance of a nephrotic syndrome. We have conducted a search in the Medline database between the years 1967 and 2003 and we only found 6 cases in adults and 3 cases in pediatric patients with a

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP), a morphological and clinical variant of chronic pyelonephritis, is an uncommon disease in children. It is characterized by the destruction of the renal parenchyma and replacement by granulomatous tissue containing foamy lipid-laden macrophages and is classified into diffuse and focal XGP. We present a case of diffuse XGP in a child with myotonic dystrophy complicated by cerebral palsy and discuss the importance of correct diagnosis and preoperative management to reduce inflammation and improve malnutrition associated with the disease.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is a rare inflammatory disease of the kidney, presenting in a diffuse or focal form. The preoperative diagnosis of XGP is made only in 10% of the cases because neither the clinical nor the radiological presentation are specific and could be confused with renal tumors, thus deserving the name of 'great imitator'. We report a case of focal XGP in a middle-aged man presenting with acute lumbago and sciatica, an unusual clinical presentation.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XPN) is an uncommon, but not rare, type of bacterial infection of the kidneys. Malignancies originating within the renal pelvis are uncommon. We report a case of XPN associated with a transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the renal pelvis in a 70-year-old woman. The pathogenesis of carcinoma of the renal pelvis in the presence of XPN is related to obstruction, chronic inflammation, and mechanical irritation caused by calculi. In the case reported here, obstruction was due to a concomitant TCC of the ureter without the presence of calculi. A review of the twel

A 56-year-old women was admitted for examination of glycosuria. She had had a blunt trauma onto the left abdomen 2 years ago that could have caused renal injury. Incidentally a left renal mass was detected by ultrasonography as a low echogenic mass. CT scan revealed a 2.5 X 2.5 cm mass with lower density than the kidney. IVP and renal angiography showed no abnormal findings. Under the diagnosis of renal tumor, left nephrectomy was performed. A 2 X 2 cm butter-yellow tumor, was seen in the renal parenchyma including the renal capsule of the upper and lateral part of the kidney. The renal pelvis
